Chapter 74
“What on earth happened?”
“It’s my fault.” Kendric admitted, “I pissed off Mr. Alinsky that day, and he
reprimanded me. My bodyguard Cade, however, interfere without my order…
Afterward, I handed him over to Mr. Alinsky.”
Caleb was furious, “your bodyguard dared to lay a hand on Mr. Alinsky and you did nothing to stop him?”
“Mr. Alinsky… gave me a good beating, and I got a bump on the head, which left me somewhat dizzy. I didn’t even notice Cade’s actions.”
“You got a head injury? Is it severe?” Caleb hurriedly asked with concern.
“Not a bid deal. A bit over a month of rest was enough for recovery.”
Caleb couldn’t hide his concern, “why didn’t you tell me?”
Celeste could read Kendric’s mind. He was willing to take all the blame as long as it didn’t interfere with their wedding.
He continued, “Grandfather, I admit I made a mistake from the start. I’ve already apologized to Mr. Alinsky, but… I hope you can accompany me to visit him so that I can offer my genuine apology again.”
His underlying message was that Myles refused to meet him. He was totally trying to shape himself as a victim.
No, she couldn’t let him keep twisting the truth.
Celeste hastily intervened, “Grandpa, I don’t want to marry Kendric.”
Yeah, Caleb couldn’t disregard her opinion so he persuaded Kendric,

“perhaps it isn’t the right time, and the preparations for your engagement
ceremony aren’t adequate. We better postpone it.”
“No!”
Kendric blurted out, “no.”
Caleb’s expression abruptly darkened, and he angrily tapped a golf club on

the ground,
Kendric lifted his eyes and gave Celeste a quick glance. Even if that’s what
he really thought deep down, he couldn’t tell the truth. “Nah.”
“Then why are you insisting holding the engagement ceremony, against her
will?”
Kendric remained tight–lipped.
Caleb get it, “Cely, go upstairs and help me pick a painting from my collections. We’re paying your dad a visit tomorrow.”
“Yes, grandpa.”
There were only Caleb and Kendric left in the bedroom. Caleb nonchalantly snorted, “quit with the act. Tell me, what’s on your mind?”
Kendric weird behavior had raised Caleb’s suspicions. It’s nearly out of the question for Kendric to apologize, let alone bow his head.
Surprisingly, a hint of vulnerability flowed out from Kendric’s eyes, which piqued Caleb’s curiosity.
“You behave like you’re the one to be wrongly treated.”
Kendric felt a bit sad. Yet he wouldn’t admit it. He didn’t need pity. Pity

implied defeat.
“Do you genuinely want to marry Cely?” asked Caleb.
Kendric nodded without hesitation.
“If you really want to marry her, you’ve got to treat her right. You have the
rest of your life to spend together, so why insist on rushing into an engagement
now?”
Kendric’s lips pressed even tighter, and he grumbled, “Celeste… she…
doesn’t like me anymore.”
He seemed depressed. “She prefers the Bates.”
He didn’t directly say that Celeste might fall in love with Manuel Bates, but the implication was clear.
Caleb didn’t believe it. “She told you so?”
Kendric shook his head, thinking of the last time when he came to Bates family to see her.
His tone became less pleasant. “She banned me from visiting her father, but she allows him to drink with the Bates. She’s changed.”
Caleb sighed. “It must be because you hurt her feelings. You have to treat her well, rather than force her.”
Kendric seemed frustrated. “It’s useless. I’ve tried… it’s useless.”
“So, have you taken my advice?”
Kendric nodded. “She still dislikes me.”
Caleb didn’t expect their relationship to have deteriorated to this point. He

pondered, “then, you can’t go against her will. Otherwise, she’ll just dislike you
more.
Kendric’s face gradually showed a hint of anger. “So what? She can only
ever be my wife.”
Caleb wore a look of ‘you’re hopeless stupid.”
“What’s the point of forcibly binding her to you? She’ll only be more
unhappy.”
“I’ll give her whatever she likes after we get married. She can only marry
me in this lifetime.”
“You…” Caleb widened his eyes.
Kendric showed not a smidgen of remorse, “Grandpa, please stay out of it.”
“You’re my grandson, and I regard Celeste as my own granddaughter. If you genuinely want to marry her, you have to gain her agreement first.”
“She won’t agree. Instead of trying to convince me to let go, grandpa, you might as well try to convince her to marry me.”
Caleb raised the golf club as if he were about to give him a whack, “you jerk!”
Kendric didn’t back down, “go ahead, I won’t change my mind anyway.”
Caleb gave him a whack on the back, “you ask for it!”
At night, Kendric returned to the bedroom, sporting a bunch of bruises.
Celeste was tidying things up and threw a glance his way.
He put jewelries back in her room, “if you don’t want them, just throw them

into the trash can.”
Celeste rolled her eyes.
From then on, all the way until the day of the engagement ceremony,
Celeste didn’t exchange a word with Kendric.
On the morning of the engagement ceremony, the sunlight was beautiful,
streaming into the kitchen.
Kendric was standing right before a frying pan.
When he saw Celeste coming, his expression turned serious.
“The breakfast will be ready in a moment.”
Celeste leaned against the kitchen island, just staring at him.
This wasn’t the first time she’d seen Kendric cook. In the past, they’d cook together on holidays. But his culinary prowess was limited to pan–frying steaks, and he didn’t even know the different levels of doneness.
As expected, he burned the fried egg again.
He silently threw the charred egg into the trash can. Celeste glanced at the eggshells inside. It was just too much to bear.
“Give me the spatula.”
Kendric stepped aside.
Maybe the act of Kendric frying eggs had reminded her of some pleasant memories from their past. Celeste’s mood was a bit lighter,

“Has Grandpa eaten?”
“Yeah.”
Celeste nodded. Suddenly, there was the sound of a lighter flicking behind
her, followed by a faint tobacco scent.
Kendric used to be a rare smoker, but recently, he’d light up a cigarette when he woke up in the mornings.
He wouldn’t finish the whole cigarette, just smoke half of it and then throw
away the rest.
“Smoking is not good for health.”
He promptly stubbed out the cigarette.
“You should quit smoking. It can give you a headache sometimes.”
The servants surprisingly noticed Kendric was in a good mood today. All morning, he had a faint, pleasant smile on his face, and his demeanor was notably gentler than usual.
The breakfast had a romantic and delightful atmosphere.
