“I want my phone back,” Celeste stated.
Kendric finished the last sip of his coffee, “certainly.”
Celeste was skeptical, “really?”
“Why not? You’re not a criminal. There’s no reason to deny you access to a
phone.”
For a split second, Celeste thought that Kendric was not that hopeless
frenzied.
In the evening, Kendric headed out for a social event.
His office had two sections, one for regular work and the other furnished as a living area with a bed and a sofa.
After retrieving her phone, Celeste first attended to missed calls and messages. Once she’d taken care of work–related matters, she called her father to inquire about his recent situation.
Myles chuckled on the other end, “hey, Cely, don’t worry, I’m doing great.”
“Remember the experts who visited our farm last time? They called a few days ago and said that the new seedlings have been successfully cultivated, and the fruits are large and sweet. Looks like we’re in for a bountiful harvest this
year!”
Celeste smiled, “Is that so? We should thank them.”
“Another good news is that a research institute wants to set up an
experimental field here, and we can use their advanced seeds for free.”

“Cely, dad will work hard and save up enough for your wedding.”
Celeste felt her eyes welling up with tears.
She was quite suspicious about this unexpected experts and research
institute. She had a feelings that they probably had something to do with
Kendric.
After hanging up, Celeste opened her laptop and googled the research
institute her father mentioned. As expected, the results showed that this
institute was affiliated with Kendric’s name.
Celeste racked her brains trying to figure out the intentions of Kendric, the
phone placed nearby rang.
The buzzing vibration brought her thoughts back, and she answered the
phone. Sienna’s voice came from the other end.
“Cely, where are you?”
“Kendric’s office,” she sighed.
There was a moment of silence, “you came back on your own, or were you
brought back forcibly?”
“The second one.”
Sienna said in an “I knew it” tone, “did he lock you up? Did he imprison.
you? Did he mistreat you?”
“Don’t worry, Cely. I’ll have my brother come and rescue you right now!”
Celeste hurriedly soothed her, “cool off, if I were locked up, how could I
answer your call now?”

Sienna lowered her voice, “that’s right…so, you can come tomorrow night?”
“What? Go where tomorrow night?”
“To attend my brother’s 30th birthday party, of course!”
In the evening. Kendric returned late, and Celeste had already fell asleep.
He had a few drinks outside, and his body temperature was slightly elevated, with a faint scent of alcohol mingling with his usual cologne.
He turned off the light, and Celeste opened her eyes.
Her clearer as she felt his kisses landed on her neck.

Celeste pushed him away, “I don’t want it tonight.”
Kendric had never been rejected by Celeste before.
“Is it almost your time of the month?”
Celeste nodded, “yes, just these two days.”
Kendric withdrew his hand. He had seen her in excruciating pain during
her period, so he didn’t insist.
He went to take a shower.
In the bedroom, scented candles were burning, filling the air with a faint
fragrance around the bedside.
Celeste heard the movement behind her and turned slightly.
Kendric had returned to the sofa, busy with his computer. “Good night,” he then turned off the lamp on her bedside.
It wasn’t until the middle of the night that, in her drowsiness, she felt
someone lay down next to her.
Celeste snapped opened her eyes.
“You’re sleeping here tonight?”
There was only one bed in the room, and Kendric had no intention of
sleeping on the sofa.
The bed was big enough for them two, and Kendric reached out to hold her
in his arms.
Celeste used to enjoy lying in his arms the most, but today, she just felt uneasy. It’s like Kendric unilaterally trapped her in his embrace.
“Kendric, are you drunk?”
“No.”
“But you’re acting strange, you know?”
“I don’t know.”
After a while, Celeste thought he had fallen asleep and was about to struggle out of his embrace.
His voice suddenly sounded in the darkness, “I’m going to the factory tomorrow, it’s going to be tough conditions, so I won’t take you with me.”
“Okay.”
“Wait me to come back.”
“Okay.”
Kendric suddenly chuckled and muttered to himself, “no, you won’t be
waiting me, you’re eager to leave me and fly far away.”
Celeste had her back turned to him, and Kendric’s chin rested gently on top
of her head.
Her heart was tinged with a chilly sense of melancholy.
Early the following morning, Kendric got up early. He was heading to the
production plant. Surprisingly, Celeste appeared friendly today, and the two of
them enjoyed breakfast without any discord.
“Wait for me tonight. I’ve got a surprise for you,” he said.
Celeste raised her head curiously, “what kind of surprise?”
“You’ll find out when the time comes.”
Perhaps it was because of Celeste’s commendable behavior the previous day, when she requested to go out, Kendric agreed.
Manuel Vader, the older brother of Sienna, had graduated from the Law School and swiftly climbed the ranks to become a senior prosecutor.
In any case, today marked a day worthy of celebration.
Although Sienna had insisted that Celeste needn’t bring a gift, she still drove to the mall and settled on gifting him a pair of sunglasses.
Several years ago, Manuel had sustained an eye injury, rendering him sensitive to bright light. With summer season coming, Celeste thought it’s a good idea to present him with a pair of sunglasses.

Kendric wouldn’t return until evening, Celeste planned to head back after
finishing dinner by eight o’clock.
She set out to the hotel early that afternoon. Over the years she had been
good friends with Sienna, so she frequently visited Vader family. Mr. and Mrs.
Vader treated her like their own daughter.
As soon as her car drove near the hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Vader came out from
to welcome her.
Sienna excitedly waved her hands, “park your car here, right here!”
Celeste wasn’t particularly skilled at driving. The narrow parking space
forced her to reverse a few times, but she still failed to back the car into parking
space.
Sienna’s instructions weren’t very helpful, either. They almost led to Celeste accidentally colliding with the sculpture.
Suddenly, a person appeared by the car window. Manuel signaled for her to get off the car.
Celeste obediently stepped out of the car and handed him the keys. Manuel expertly parked the car.
She handed the prepared gift to Manuel, “happy birthday, Manuel.”
