It’s not until past nine in the evening that Celeste woke up. She opened her eyes and luckily, the room was not in pitch dark. The lamp beside the bed cast a yellow glow, enveloping the room in a warm atmosphere.
The heating in the room was on. Celeste had a parched throat. Her cheeks.

“Miss Alinsky.”
Voice came from the doorway, and then the door opened.
“You wanna have dinner now?” The maid had been waiting outside. They
had already prepared a sumptuous dinner downstairs.
Celeste didn’t have much appetite because she was laden with worries for
grandpa Caleb and Kendric. She took a few bites and put down the fork.
The butler Nicho noticed her distraction. He offered a piece of advice, “Miss Alinsky, how about you taking the dinner to the hospital and eating with sir?
The doctor said he can now have some light food.”
Celeste looked at these various dishes on the table. Kendric’s pale face came to her mind. Immediately, she had the maid bring a lunch box and packed the barely touched meal to take to the hospital.
The snow fell unceasingly outside. Nicho was sitting on the driver’s seat, cautiously driving through the snow.
“Mr. Melville thought you wouldn’t go to the hospital tonight. He asked me
to stay here to be at your service, and he left first.”
“When did he leave?” asked Celeste.

“Around five in the afternoon. You were sound asleep. He tried to wake you
up before he left, but you seemed in exhausted slumber, so he gave up.”

Suddenly, she remembered what Kendric had done at her house when he

“I thought you wouldn’t come tonight,” he had a faint yet sincere smile on

Celeste took out the packed meal. “this is for you. They said you haven’t eat your dinner.”
The smile on his face deepened, “so you specially brought it for me?”
Celeste rolled her eyes and denied, “they made too much dishes, and cant

Kendric didn’t mind whether it was leftovers or not. What mattered most
was that she specially brought it over and she cared him!
They sat down to have dinner. Then Kendric brought up the topic, “you’re
going back home tomorrow.”
His words reminded Celeste that her father would come pick her up
tomorrow. She nodded her head. Actually, even if her father didn’t come
tomorrow, she would have to leave.
From the start, the only reason she stayed here was to help Kendric get over this difficult phase, and out of her concerns for Grandpa Caleb. Now that the troubles had been solved and he’s recovering well, she had no necessary to stay.
Kendric took a sip of soup to moisten his dry throat, “will you come back?”
“Yeah, grandpa is still in a critical condition, and I’ll come back to visit him as long as I have time.”
Kendric knew she was avoiding his question, “I mean, except for checking on grandpa… will you come back for me?”
Celeste hadn’t swallowed the soup in her mouth and was barely choked on it when heard his words, “what?”
Her reaction hurt his feelings. His eyes were stained with heavy
melancholy and a slight hint of expectation, “I’m a patient, too.”
Celeste leaned back on her chair and cast him a weird look, “don’t assume a pitiful look. That’s not you!”
The moment she blurted out the words, Celeste regretted it. She shouldn’t

have used the word “assume” because Kendric was really a patient. She hurt his
feelings.
“I’m sorry, Kendric. I didn’t meant that.”
Kendric responded her with silence.
“I really didn’t mean that. You always give me an impression of being so
strong and powerful. I’m not accustomed to your soft side…”
“You’re not accustomed to what?”
Celeste perceived that he had got slightly angry. “It’s hard to describe.
Anyway, I don’t think we should be like this now…”
Her explanations, however, ignited his fury. Though he was exercising considerable restraint, it’s still easy to tell he was boiling with anger. “We
shouldn’t be like what?”
“So you think, you shouldn’t have stayed and offered me help, just out of your fucking sympathy, then dump me and just never come back!”
“Or you mean, you shouldn’t have allowed yourself to fall in love with me, again.”
He lost his patience and decided to be brutally frank about this. He left no spare for Celeste to evade. “Celeste, you still love me, just like how I love you.”
Celeste almost blurted out the word “shameless,” but it would sound like a clumsy excuse, so she stared at him and confessed, “yeah, I still do, and so what?”
Kendric revealed a beam of satisfaction, just like a ray of sunlight shining through the overcast sky. There contained a childlike purity and smug in his
