Finding a small studio apartment was a sign from the universe. It was the perfect place for her. She was located in a quaint little residential area with manicured lawns.

She had paused when she first saw it. And the most amazing thing was how affordable it was. She needed to make some changes and downsize how her finances would take a blow when she divorced,

Getting a place she could quickly pay for was a blessing. And although the unit was small, it came with a beautiful view that overlooked the entire area.

Madison went back home after a quick stop at the car wash. She entered the main bedroom and realized someone had cleared up the petals from the previous night.

The only thing that remained was a vase with a few blooming roses that filled the room with a fragrant scent. She began packing her things.

When she first married Ethan and moved in, she had only two suitcases. But now, her clothes and stuff have multiplied over the years, and she needs more suitcases to carry her things in.

Madison mused as she stared at her remaining clothes in the closet. Although there was nothing to write home about her marriage life, Madison had to admit that she had accumulated plenty of clothes, mostly luxury brands. Most of them were gifts from Ethan and Olivia. Ethan showered her with lots of gifts.

Now that I think of it, she has spent most of the last two years shopping and buying items for herself. Ethan had indeed given her everything he could, except the love she wanted.

Madison dropped down on the bed with a sign. It was her fault for thinking that Ethan could love her. During the marriage, Ethan was kind and caring. He was patient with her and listened to her.

Anytime she mentioned she wanted something, Ethan always surprised her with it. He never let her want anything he could provide. But the one thing she wanted the most was what he didn’t give her- his heart. And now Madison can see why, because it’s always belonged to Maya.

When she saw her packing, Evelyn had prepared some snacks and came upstairs to give them to Madison. She was momentarily stunned. “What are you doing, Madam?”

Madison stood up. “I’m moving out today, Evelyn. Thank you for looking after me for the past two years.”

“Why are you moving out, Madam? This is your home. Where are you going to go?”

“It’s not going to be my home any longer.” Madison sighed.

With that, Madison turned and resumed her packing. Seeing that Madison was preoccupied, Evelyn did not intrude any further. Instead, she went back downstairs and called Ethan.

Immediately after receiving Evelyn’s call, Ethan got into his car and drove home. He couldn’t let Madison leave.

When he got home, Madison was in the middle of searching for another suitcase. She had already filled both suitcases and now needed a third one. When he saw this, Ethan suddenly realized he would

lose her.

“What are you doing? I take back everything I said just now. I’m sorry, alright.” He said this and shoved his hands through his hair. The only sign of distress that he felt.

Madison stood up and stared at the man she had loved wholeheartedly for many years.

She could not help feeling that he was still a stranger to her, even after so many years. “Weren’t you the one who kicked me out? What’s wrong, Ethan? Are you pitying me?”

Ethan grew even more annoyed when he heard her snarky tone. “I didn’t mean what I said at all. Can we stop fighting?”

He regretted everything he said when he got into his car, but his pride stopped him from returning and apologizing.

“Okay. You’ve apologized. I’ve forgiven you. But I’m still not staying here. It’s time I stopped relying on you and started living for myself.” Madison said.

“Besides, if you break a plate and say sorry, The plate will remain broken. It’s the same with my trust,

Ethan.”

Ethan did not know how to respond to her peculiar metaphor. He wanted nothing more than to steal Madison’s lips shut with duct tape right that instant and tie her to his bed until she promised not to

mention anything about divorce ever again.

“Yes, I’m sorry. I know I said things I did not mean, but what should I do? It’s already in the past, so I

can’t possibly turn back time.”

Madison fell silent. She ignored him and continued packing her things while Ethan watched silently.

After some time, she finally finished packing up and prepared to leave.

She picked up the first suitcase to carry it downstairs when Ethan walked up to her.

“Ethan? Ethan? What’s the meaning of this? I want to leave that all.” She replied as she kept backing up anytime he moved forward.

Ethan didn’t answer but continued staring at her with an intense look that melted her inside. Her back is suddenly against the wall, and Ethan doesn’t stop until he’s pressed against her.

The suitcase falls from her hand as she raises both hands to push Ethan away. “You’re too close.” She whispered.

Ethan’s hands grabbed each of her hands and slowly raised them until they were above her head. Madison whimpered.

“Ethan, please.” She didn’t even know what she was begging for. For him to come closer or to leave

her alone.

“Didn’t you used to say you loved me? Why are you leaving me now?” Ethan asks with a raspy voice, staring at her intently.

“There is no particular reason. But this isn’t how I planned to live my life. A neglected wife. It’s probably best that we part ways.” Madison did not want to be reminded of the past because, with it, came the memory that he cheated on her and was probably still cheating on her.

“Do you think I neglected you?”

“Yes. You made me doubt myself. I used to think something was physically wrong with you, but I finally realized the truth last night. You did not have an interest in me.

There was someone else who held your interest. I’m sorry to break it to you, but I cannot tolerate a husband who sleeps with other women,” Madison explained as calmly as she could, even as she was starting to feel light–headed from the smell so close to her.

“Sleep with other women? Since when?” Ethan asked, surprised.

“Get away from me, you disgusting prick!” Madison tried to release herself from his grip.

“Answer my question then. If your reasoning is valid, then I’ll let you go.”

“I saw the news. You make headlines every couple of days with other women, so how can I not know? Just because I don’t leave the house doesn’t mean I don’t know what goes on outside.” Madison was already growing tired of this interaction.

“Those are just rumors. I have never engaged in anything physical or emotional with them. “Ethan’s expression was so sincere that, for a moment, Madison was almost fooled into believing him.

“Then what about the hickey last night? Are you going to tell me you left it there yourself?”

Hickey? What hickey?

Ethan lowered his head but could not see the hickey on his neck.

He let go of Madison and picked up a small mirror on his dressing table.

She was right. There was a dark red bruise on his neck.

He did not know where this had come from.

“I don’t know when I got this on me, but it’s not from another woman.”

Madison rolled her eyes, then picked up her two suitcases and said, “I’m taking these two suitcases with me. I ran out of space in these two suitcases, so I’ll return tomorrow to pack again. I rented a

studio with my money, so we’re even now.”

Her words felt like knives in his heart.

“Do you remember what the doctor told us just now? He said Mom needs to control her stress level. If she finds out you’re moving out, her blood pressure will rise, and she’ll be in danger. Aren’t you worried about what will happen to her?”

Madison froze in her steps when she heard this.

All her motivation to leave seemed to have dissipated at the mention of Olivia.

“We’ll hide our divorce from her so she can never find out.‘

“Do you honestly think you can hide anything from her? Besides, your moving out will be the biggest giveaway of our divorce,” Ethan replied.

“What are we supposed to do then?”

“We should wait. Once Mom’s condition stabilizes, I will allow you to do whatever you want. If you still want a divorce by then, I will go with it.”

Madison knew she could not argue with this logic, so she nodded. She put down her suitcase, walked over to the window, and stared out at the view without another word, and then she turned back to

Ethan.

“No. I want a divorce.”
