Chapter 18
At the dinner table, Evelyn barely touched any food because she didn’t have much appetite.
“Evelyn, what’s going on? Are you having difficulties deciding which dish you’d like to eat because there are too many of them?” Monica’s biggest hobby was to show off in front of Evelyn.
“No, I just can’t find anything I like on the table.”
She sounded like a rich young lady who didn’t think this food was good enough.
Freda glanced at her. “May I know what line your family is in?”
“My family?” Evelyn frowned. “Well, the line that requires hard labor.”
“I see. Making a living isn’t easy,” Freda sneered.
Then why the hell did she act like she was a princess or something?
Evelyn remained silent because Freda was right in a sense.
“It’s alright. Now that Evelyn has married my son, I’ll see what I can do,” Karlo cut in to save Evelyn from the embarrassment.
But Freda was pis sed. “Are you challenging what I said before? We don’t do charity.”
Evelyn wanted to roll her eyes but held back the urge eventually. Her family didn’t need their charity!
Under the table, Eric patted her hand as if he was trying to calm her down.
Evelyn wasn’t pis sed.
But she completely lost her appetite.
She stood up and said, “Enjoy the food. Now if you’ll excuse me.”
She walked away without waiting for Eric..
She was arrogant and didn’t care about what others thought of her.
“See, we didn’t say anything, but she’s already showing an attitude,” Freda commented.
Monica gloated, “She’s got no money, but she has a bad temper.”
Eric looked at her. “Monica, I hear that the Christy family lost a project, right?”
“Why do you care? You can’t help us. It’s Nordol Group. They’re everywhere!” Monica’s good mood was ruined by Eric instantly.
Eric didn’t respond to that. He put down the knife and fork and said to everyone at the table, “Excuse me.”
“Eric, wait. Now that you’re married, you should start looking out for your future. Would you like to come work in the company?” said Karlo.
Before Eric could respond, Freda objected to the idea.
“Evan and Earl are doing a good job running the company. Why are you asking him to join the company? Do you want the company to be torn apart?”
Eric knew this was going to happen. He shrugged indifferently.
“Dad, running a business is not my thing. Evan and Earl can handle the company. I’m of no help.”
With that, he went upstairs.
There was no sign of Evelyn upstairs. He didn’t know where she was.
So, he called her.
“What’s up?” She sounded impatient.
“Where are you?” Eric sounded like a child who had got abandoned.
“I drove your car away. I’ll be back after a while,” said Evelyn.
She didn’t give a direct answer, but he knew where she was headed.
“How did you get out?” Eric looked surprised. He hadn’t seen her come upstairs.
“Over the wall.” With that, she hung up.
It was just the third floor. It couldn’t trap her.

Chapter 18
Why didn’t she take the front door? Because she didn’t want to be lectured. Trying to reason with an unreasonable person was a mistake in the first place.
“Evelyn, did you get a new car?” As soon as she got home, a girl, Amber, came over to size up the car.
“It’s borrowed.” Evelyn wanted to say that it belonged to her husband, but she was afraid that the girl might make a fuss and draw her grandparents’ attention.
“I see.” Amber nodded. Then, she asked with curiosity, “Did you borrow it from Lola?”
“Why didn’t you say it was Jane’s?” Evelyn tidied her clothes before walking into the house.
“Dr. Walter wouldn’t lend her stuff to anyone,” said Amber.
Evelyn smiled silently.
When she saw the two faces in the living room, she wished to run away immediately.
She’d got played.
“Grandpa, Grandma,” greeted Evelyn.
Her grandfather, Hank Morris, nodded with a stern face.
Sitting next to him, Natalia Morris kept winking at her granddaughter.
Evelyn couldn’t figure out what Natalia was trying to tell her, so she stared in confusion.
“Enough. I’m sitting right here. Eve, tell me, why didn’t you leave the army?” said Hank.
He was a man who believed every action should have a reason.
“There is no why. I just feel tired. I want to take a break,” Evelyn lied without blinking.
But Hank didn’t buy that.
“Do I look like an idiot to you?” Hank shot her a sharp glance.
“What else do you expect me to say? Do you want me to tell you that I left the army to get married but then found out that that jerk cheated on me?” Evelyn muttered.
Since the old man knew that she’d left the army, he must know about her breakup with Caden, too.
As for the fact that she was married, she figured she could still keep it from him for a while.
“I told
you
that he couldn’t be trusted, but you wouldn’t listen to me,” Hank said as he shook his head.
“You’d hardly spent any time with him. How would you know?” Evelyn argued.
Oddly enough, during all those years they were in a romantic relationship, she’d never invited Caden home, and Caden had never asked, either.
Hank frowned and sighed, “A man’s hunch on another man is always right.”
“Eve, your grandfather is right about this. Though we only met him a few times, I know he’s a jerk,” echoed Natalia.
“Indeed, he is. So, I broke up with him,” Evelyn said, looking frustrated.
“You didn’t break up with him. He dumped you,” Hank snorted.
“So, are you going to get revenge for me?” Evelyn asked hopefully.
Hank shot her a dirty look. “That’s your business. Handle it yourself.”
“I know you don’t love me,” Evelyn sighed. Then, she turned to Amber. “You’re my witness. You saw how he treated me, didn’t you?”
“I…” Amber didn’t know how to respond. Why did Evelyn have to put her in a difficult position?
Why?
Fortunately, Evelyn didn’t press on for her answer.
Just then, a handsome guy came down from upstairs.
“Eve, you’re back!”
So, who was this guy?
