Chapter 17
“Oh my! Ms. Evelyn, are you OK?” The chef panicked instantly.
Evelyn washed the wound and said with a frown, “I’m fine.”
She overacted. The wound was deep.
“Evelyn, why are you here?” Someone asked a question at the door.
Eric, who couldn’t be found anywhere just now, suddenly showed up.
“Mr. Jackson, Ms. Evelyn is hurt, the chef quickly said when he saw Eric.
“What?” Eric came to Evelyn hurriedly and grabbed her hand. “Who asked you to do that?”
Eric said that loudly, and he was furious.
The chef aside was shocked, his mouth wide open. If he remembered right, this was the first time he saw Eric losing his
temper.
“I was told that because I’m poor, I have to work to feed myself,” Evelyn exaggerated on purpose.
After all, Eric told her it was fine even if she tore the Jackson family apart.
He surely wouldn’t mind her playing tricks.
Moreover, that was what they implied.
“Who said that?” Eric put her finger into his mouth and sucked it.
Evelyn was about to say something, but what Eric did surprised her. She was shocked, her mouth wide open.
“Is he acting? He’s a better actor than I am.”
Evelyn took back her hand with a blush. “Who do you think it was?”
“Don’t you always say you can handle it?” Eric stared at Evelyn, took her hand again, and led her outside.
A few people were sitting in the living room.
Seeing Eric and Evelyn walking out, each of them had different ideas.
Eric didn’t say anything to them. He only said to the butler, “Get me the medical box.”
“Yes, Mr. Jackson.” The butler acted at once.
“Well, Evelyn was not born in a rich family. How could she cut her hand while doing chores,” Freda complained first. “Right. I wonder whether she got hurt on purpose. That way, no one dares ask her to do chores in future.” Monica chimed in with Freda.
Evelyn frowned and looked at Monica. “Monica, you seem to like reading others’ minds.”
“What do you imply?” Monica was angry. Others had also said bad things about Evelyn. Why did Evelyn only target her?
“One often tends to judge others by herself.” Evelyn was obedient before, but that was because she was unfamiliar with the family, and she didn’t know Eric’s position in the family.
Now that she knew it, she wouldn’t stand it.
“Mom, listen to her. That’s how she slanders others.” Monica couldn’t outspeak Evelyn, so she turned to Freda for help.
Freda stared at Monica. “Save it. I saw what happened.”
Then, Freda looked at Evelyn. “Our family has always been harmonious. I won’t allow anyone to stir up trouble.” “Freda, are you talking to me?” Since Freda was not the birth mother of Eric, Evelyn didn’t even want to address her as
mom.
“After all, Monica is your sister-in-law. You should respect her at least. I hope that you understand that.” What Freda said was implying Evelyn was ill-bred.
“I also know that to earn others’ respect, you should respect others first.” Evelyn talked back. She planned to stay out of trouble on the first day she came, but she couldn’t.
“Are you talking back?” Freda was pis sed off. As her daughter-in-law, Evelyn was not supposed to talk back.
Evelyn shook her head. “No, I’m just telling the truth.”
“I’m your mother-in-law. I don’t need you to lecture me. Evelyn, what did your parents teach you? How dare you show no respect to the elder?” Freda obviously raised her voice.

“Sorry. I’m straightforward. If I’ve made you uncomfortable, please pardon me. After all, I’m a younger member of the family.” Evelyn tried to emphasize Freda’s position as the elder.
If Freda couldn’t even tolerate such a little mistake, she was not behaving like an elder.
Freda was speechless. She lifted her cup angrily and took a sip, deciding to let it go.
However, bad at reading others’ minds, Monica said, “Mom, Evelyn shows no respect to you.”
The war was on again.
“Monica, you tried to read others’ minds again.” After saying that, Evelyn looked down at her hand. Eric had wrapped up her wound with an adhesive bandage. He just remained silent the whole process.
Evelyn couldn’t tell whether Eric heard the whole thing or not. Or perhaps he thought she could handle it by herself.
“Enough! Shut up, both of you! Eric, teach Evelyn our family rules when you’ve got time. Have you heard me?” Freda didn’t want to talk about it anymore. After all, she was not in the right.
A sneer flashed across Eric’s eyes. Then he looked up and replied with a smile, “OK. But I can’t promise she’ll listen to me.”
“What do you mean? Do you also want to disobey me?” Freda looked at Eric in surprise because he had never talked like that to her before.
Whatever Freda said, Eric always obeyed her.
Anyway, Freda never asked Eric to do anything positive.
“I dare not. I just find it hard to understand. We have enough ser vants. Why did Evelyn have to work in the kitchen?” Eric looked at Freda directly.
Eric told Evelyn he wouldn’t defend her on the condition that he found it tolerable.
“Is there any new bride who hasn’t been asked by her mother-in-law to do chores? Well, are you feeling bad for her? That’s not your style. I remember you always treat women as objects.” After saying that, Freda looked at Evelyn.
What a nice move!
Freda directly told Evelyn that Eric was not actually feeling bad for her. He was putting on an act.
Evelyn ignored the provocation and remained silent. After all, Freda didn’t mention her name.
Moreover, Eric was talking. Why should she bother?
“That’s right, but she is my wife. She’s different from other women. Mom, please be more patient with her.” Eric didn’t want to offend Freda openly. Every word he said sounded sincere.
“Well, what are you doing? Having a criticism meeting?” Evan walked downstairs, looking directly at Eric.
Evan never took Eric seriously. To Evan, Eric was no match for him in the past, and nothing would change in the future.
“Evan.” Eric greeted Evan reluctantly with a poker face.
Evelyn finally understood Eric’s position in the family and why he said he couldn’t defend her. If Eric defended her, many people would scold him.
That should be the pain of an illegitimate son.
“Right! Calm down. Don’t be impulsive. We’re a family.” Evan came over and patted Eric on the shoulder.
Eric nodded and said nothing. When he lowered his head, there was a flash of coldness in his eyes.
Evelyn happened to grasp the coldness in Eric’s eyes, but she thought she might be wrong. She looked at Eric thoughtfully.
