Chapter 99 An Investigation Lead  ‘It really has been long.‘ Gwyneth thought as she nodded to Hayden. She had not seen him ever since she returned from studying abroad. Gwyneth frequently received calls and texts from Hayden initially, but she always tried to put him off. Hayden was smart and naturally fell that she was avoiding him. So, the two lost contact sometime after that.  Although Hayden treated Gwyneth well, she always fell weirded out by it. But aside from the sudden increase in affection, the two were really good friends initially, especially since he had saved her life.  The corner of Gwyneth’s lips twitched slightly. She wanted to thank Hayden when more sounds of footsteps came from outside. She looked over Hayden’s shoulders and saw a group of policemen had arrived. She also noticed that Liam was one of the people who led  them there.  Gwyneth’s eyes flowed with emotions seeing that man’s face, while Liam’s heart almost stopped beating when he saw her.  Liam walked toward her in big steps and checked her out from top to bottom. He let out a sigh of relief after making sure that she was safe. The two had known each other for a long time, yet this was the first time he had seen her in such a poor state.  Hayden did not note the look on Gwyneth’s face, nor did he pay any attention to who had rushed to the scene. Instead, he lowered his head, removed his coat, and put it directly over Gwyneth’s shoulders.  Gwyneth did not bother to worry about these little matters right now. She did not even have the energy to deal with it. She immediately stepped forward with serious look when she saw the police walk in. “Sir, the kidnappers escaped through the back door a few minutes ago.”  The captain leading the team nodded to his member, and all of them got into action. The officer then looked at Gwyneth and let out a long sigh.  “Are you hurt, Ms. Glen?”  “I’m fine, and so is my secretary. Thank you for getting here so quickly.”  The captain wanted to cry when he heard this. ‘Looks like I won’t lose my job,‘ he thought.  After Gwyneth gave a report and went through the general procedures, Liam could no longer hold himself back. He had wanted to take this woman in his arms the moment he laid eyes on her.  Liam approached Gwyneth and blocked off everyone else. “Are you alright? Are you hurt? Were you scared?” He asked, about to grab Gwyneth’s hand to check if she was actually okay. However, someone got in his way before he could reach out to her.  Liam slowly looked up, narrowed his eyes, and glared at the man before him. Hayden stared at Liam with scrutiny, like a dagger was hidden behind his deep gaze.  “Who’s this?” Liam asked with indifference. He saw the jacket on Gwyneth’s shoulders, and his face darkened even more.  “Hayden Hut,” Gwyneth replied without any elaboration.  Hayden smirked slightly and stretched his hand to Liam, who shook it at first sight. Even though it was a brief handshake, their hostility was hard to ignore.  Gwyneth had a headache when she saw this happen. “Why do I have so much to deal with today? I really feel like crying,‘ she thought. She then turned around, and when she was about to say something to the police, Elizabeth rushed into the warehouse unexpectedly.  Elizabeth was panting, which showed that Liam’s footsteps were too fast for her to handle. As soon as she entered the room, her eyes were fixated on Gwyneth. She could not help but look at her timidly.  Gwyneth’s face was covered with dust at that time, while a jacket that did not belong to her draped over her shoulders. Her long hair was messy, and her shirt was torn. She looked wretched.  Elizabeth was overjoyed when she saw that. She thought that the kidnappers had successfully done what Kingsley had ordered. After some consideration, she hurried forward with a worried look.  “Oh, thank god you’re okay. Ms. Glen. Those people are monsters. It’s good to see that you’re alive no matter what they did to you.” Elizabeth said, struggling to manage a reassuring smile.  1/2  No one cared about what she had to say then, and Gwyneth was not buying it. However, she suddenly remembered something when Elizabeth mentioned the kidnappers.  “Captain, I’ve wounded the kidnappers in self–defense, so I think they would be easy to find.” Gwyneth stepped forward to stop the policeman who was about to leave. “I’ve also heard them talk about the person who hired them. It’s someone called Kingsley Leed.” 

Chapter 98 Emerging From the Light  The kidnappers could not help but tremble after being yelled at by their leader. They looked at each other, and one spoke hesitantly. “But boss, they didn’t say we could kill her. Will we get into trouble…”  “Damn it! If you bastards don’t do something quickly, I will shoot you first!” The gang leader cursed in pain as he tried to stand up. However, that kick in the nuts almost killed him. Both of his legs were weak. All he could do was lay on the ground and give orders.  The leader of their group was considered an outlaw. Naturally, the men were more afraid of their boss than of Gwyneth. They looked at each other again and could not help but swallow a few times.  In the end, they made up their mind. Just as one of the kidnappers was about to shoot, he felt a sense of numbness in his wrist. He looked  down and almost fainted from shock as he saw the gun he held was now on the ground, and his wrist was bleeding profusely.  It turned out that just as he was about to shoot Gwyneth, someone in the corner of the room had fired a shot at him. “Who did this?! Who  the hell did this?!” He yelled..  Suddenly, an unknown person appeared. It was clear that he was with Gwyneth.  The kidnappers, who were already in a panic, turned pale. The only thing they could do now was bite the bullet and demand an answer. Who the hell shot him?! Come out here this instant, or else…” Another kidnapper with cold hands said as loudly as possible to please the  boss and try to cheer himself on.  However, before he could finish his sentence, another shot was fired.  “AHH!”  BANG  The person shot this time was not as lucky as before since the bullet did not pass through his wrist but the small of his back.  Gwyneth was startled by the sudden gunshot and wondered who was hiding in the dark. Although the two shots were fired to save her, it was still uncertain whether the person was on her side.  ‘Fuck it,‘ she thought. Gwyneth frowned and rolled toward Wanda while the kidnappers focused on something else.  “Ms. Glen…” Wanda called out softly in a hoarse voice.  “Shh. Hold on. Don’t talk.”  Gwyneth patted Wanda’s head and untied the rope that held her hands together. After that, she grabbed Wanda’s wrist, and the two  quickly hid behind a large wooden crate.  “Are you injured?” Gwyneth asked as she helped Wanda undo the rope tied around her body. Her heart ached when she saw how bruised her wrist was.  Wanda pursed her lips and shook her head violently. Though she was terrified to death at that moment, she did not want Gwyneth to worry.  “Hey, everything’s gonna be fine. We’ll get out of here in no time.”  Gwyneth knew what Wanda was thinking at a glance. She reached out to fix her messy hair and smiled softly.  “I guess we’re going to be friends till the end now,” Gwyneth teased, not forgetting to joke around at a serious time like this.  Wanda almost burst into tears and laughter hearing that. Just when she was about to speak again, police sirens sounded outside the warehouse.  If Gwyneth and Wanda could hear the noise, that meant that the kidnappers also heard it as well. Their initial panic gradually intensified, and each of them broke out in cold sweat.  The men eventually helped their leader up, but he was still unable to walk steadily. “Damn it! I’ll admit defeat this time! Let’s get out of here now!” After the leader said this, several men nodded and prepared to escape through the back door.  The front door was kicked open just as they were trying to escape. Gwyneth’s body jolted at the sound of the door banging. She moved slowly and looked toward the door of the warehouse. The harsh light from the outside made her squint.  she thought it was Liam, but she found the outline and figure of the man to be unfamiliar.  Something stirred inside of Gwyneth’s heart. She turned sideways and slowly stood up. Then, the man took two more steps into the warehouse. When the light faded, Gwyneth could see the face of the person clearly.  It was Hayden.  Gwyneth pursed her lips, grateful but slightly disappointed that the man was not Liam. What a strange feeling,‘ she thought.  At that time, Hayden had already walked up to Gwyneth while she was distracted. He looked at her up and down a few times. When he confirmed that she was unharmed, he said softly with a smile. “Long time no see, Gwyneth Glen.” 

Chapter 97 A Sudden Change of Events  “Hey, beautiful. There’s no need to rush. You’ll know what I’m going to do with you in a moment,” said the kidnappers‘ leader as a sinister smile appeared on his face. His slightly opened jacket revealed a gun at his waist. The man did not notice it, but Gwyneth’s lips curled into  a faint smile.  ‘I’d say… Some people work hard to end the life of others, yet they don’t know when their life will end,” thought Gwyneth.  When the leader was about to put himsell inside her, he fell a sharp pain in his lower body. He looked at Gwyneth and realized she had kicked him in the nuts. She sneered as she stared at the man’s distorted features.  Gwyneth took advantage of the situation and pulled her hand out of the rope that had been loosened. She had already untied the rope when Wanda was negotiating with the kidnappers.  She tried to stall as long as possible to ensure their safety. She did not want anything to go wrong. However, that was not enough.  She was still sitting on the ground. All she could hear was the man screaming like a pig. She looked at him in amusement and disgust. She put her arm forward and grabbed the gun from the leader.  At the other end of the room, Wanda was already pinned down by one of the kidnappers. The man was ready to reach his hands into Wanda’s shirt, but the sudden change of events made him shudder. He turned around to see what was happening and saw Gwyneth directly firing at him.  Gwyneth did not aim at the man’s head or heart. Instead, the bullet went through his waist. This position would cause much blood loss,  but it will not kill him in the short run.  “AHH!”  Wanda felt like dying at that moment. She tightly closed her eyes as she could sense the man’s cold smirk and vile stench when she heard a gunshot. She then heard an instinctive scream and opened her eyes. She could not believe the scene in front of her. Her mouth widened in disbelief. She did not expect that the person with the gun was Gwyneth and that she shot one of the kidnappers.  Gwyneth noticed Wanda’s expression and gently nodded at her, trying to calm her down as much as possible. She felt a little sorry for Wanda, to say the least. If she had not taken her in as her secretary, she would not have had to experience so many bad situations.  When the police officers near the fishing port heard the gunshot, they immediately rushed to the scene. Liam and Hayden and their team of men also ran in the same direction. The fishermen at the port moved out of the way when they saw the crowd. They were both scared  and curious at the same time.  The rest of the kidnappers were all dumbfounded by the unexpected turn of events. None of them expected Gwyneth to obtain the gun  and shoot one of their own.  Though the kidnappers had never encountered something like this before, they had been in this circle for many years, so they quickly regained their senses. They all took their guns from their pockets and pointed them at Gwyneth.  Gwyneth was already standing in front of Wanda at that moment, completely blocking her from danger. She stood there and faced the guns without any fear. She held the pistol in her hand firmly and pointed it at them.  “Ms. Glen…” Wanda’s voice trembled. She stared at Gwyneth’s back, not knowing what to feel. All she could think of was that she had  made the right choice working under Gwyneth. After all, every bullet has its billet. Not many people would sacrifice themselves to protect  their secretaries.  At that moment, Gwyneth and the kidnappers were facing each other; none seemed relaxed.  “Don’t be rash, little girl. You don’t know when you’re next.”  Gwyneth let out an angry laugh when she heard what the kidnappers said.  “Oh? Why don’t you shoot to let me know when?” It was hard to say whether Gwyneth was actually not afraid since she was being held at  gunpoint. However, from her point of view, there was nothing else for her to be afraid of in this dire situation.  In addition to that, Gwyneth predicted that the kidnappers‘ initial goal was not to kill her. Otherwise, they would have talked about the process earlier. The smile on Gwyneth’s lace deepened at the thought of it. ‘The consequences of violating a kidnapping agreement are  “never light,‘ she told herself.  1/2  point a gun at them. They found it hard to overcome this fear.  At that moment, the gang leader was still lying on the ground like a shrimp. His hands covered his body’s lower hall, and his face was still blue. He had never been stripped of his power by a woman before, and definitely never in front of his men.  “That fucking bitch! Kill her! Hurry up and kill her!”

Chapter 93 She Must Be Angry  Liam hung up the phone harshly after hearing the cold voice from the end of the receiver. Unwilling to give up. Liam called the number once again. He then hung up the phone after receiving the same response.
