Chapter 30 The elevator reached the second floor, and Gideon walked in, followed by two fashionably dressed foreign women.  Jeanne’s eyes lit up, thinking, ‘Gideon is in the lab today too!‘  However, her attention was mostly captured by the foreign women.  Jeanne glanced at them curiously.  She pondered, ‘I didn’t see these two the last time I was at the lab.  Gideon was surprised, wondering, ‘How did these two little ones find their way here?’ He was about to speak when the chestnut–haired foreign girl suddenly covered her mouth, laughed, and spoke in Veridianian. “Oh, that little girl looks so funny!”  The blonde girl who was with her also laughed.  Having lived abroad for four years, Jeanne understood what they said but thought they were just joking and didn’t take it to heart.  Seeing no reaction from Ruben and Jeanne and assuming they didn’t understand her, the blonde girl became more unrestrained.  She started mocking Jeanne’s dress, saying, “My goodness, she looks like a jellyfish, how silly!”  Ruben then glanced at them coldly, his brow furrowing in displeasure.  He thought angrily, “These two have no manners!‘  Gideon also frowned, intending to reprimand them, but Jeanne was much quicker.  Pinching her dress, Jeanne retorted in Veridianian, “What’s wrong with looking like a jellyfish? Jellyfish can be cute, too.”  The chestnut–haired girl looked at her in slight surprise, thinking, ‘Such a young child. understands Veridianian?‘ But the next second, she started mocking Jeanne’s pronunciation, bizarrely switching languages to ridicule her. She spoke in Xyronian, and the blonde girl joined in, laughing even more exaggeratedly, exuding a sense of superiority.  Upon hearing Xyronian, Jeanne felt a rush of familiarity.  She pondered, ‘I already started speaking Xyronian with the people in Mommy’s lab since I began learning to speak. Their Xyronian is still far from good enough.”‘  Jeanne turned around and said, “Hello there. Your Xyronian doesn’t sound quite natural.  “You made about three grammatical errors in that sentence. You don’t really need to switch languages while talking because even if you speak Xyronian, I can still understand you.”  The expressions of the two foreign women then turned unsightly upon hearing her.  Then, the elevator doors opened after a ding.  In their haste, they didn’t even bother to see which floor it was on and quickly fled.  Chapter 30  Gideon chuckled, admiration unconsciously showing in his eyes. He bent down and asked, “You’re so impressive. What other languages do you know?”  “Ruben is better than me, but he doesn’t like to talk,” Jeanne boasted, holding Ruben’s hand proudly. “I’ve seen Ruben write articles in over 10 different languages.  Jeanne could only recognize four or five languages. The rest she understood through translation.  Gideon, increasingly impressed by them, smiled, “Is that so? You’re so talented, Ruben. Maybe you could try speaking sometimes. That way, you can help Jeanne deal with those who bully her.”  Ruben pushed up his large black–framed glasses on his nose, ignoring him.  He thought, ‘I don’t need to speak to help Jeanne deal with those people.’  Ruben had caught a glimpse of the hotel room card tucked behind the woman’s transparent phone case in her hand. It belonged to a nearby hotel, and he planned to take action once he reached the office.  “I can protect Ruben too,” Jeanne declared, spreading her arms in front of Ruben protectively. “Gideon, don’t pressure Ruben. He’s doing very well now.”  Gideon, being schooled by a four–year–old girl, instinctively touched his nose and felt awkward.  He pondered sarcastically, “This quirky temperament must be inherited from Edith‘  […]

Chapter 27 After Edith finished her work report, outside the window, the evening was settling into a soft, dim glow.  She stretched her body and said, “Alright, kiddos, let’s  go  home!”  “Mommy, you’ve worked hard!” Jeanne came over and massaged Edith’s shoulders thoughtfully.  Edith’s face was then covered in cookie crumbs from Jeanne’s affectionate nuzzle.  She thought amusingly, ‘Goodness, the desk is littered with empty snack packets, and she hasn’t left a single piece.’  Edith playfully teased, “Why didn’t you share some snacks with me, hmm? Look at your little belly. It’s already sticking out.”  She then attempted to poke Jeanne’s belly, but Jeanne swiftly dodged and hid behind Ruben.  Blushing slightly, Jeanne murmured with a slight smile, “Ruben had eaten some too.” Although Ruben had hardly eaten any, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he just nodded in agreement.  He pondered, ‘Can’t help it, she’s my sister, I have to spoil her a bit.‘  Edith laughed helplessly. “Hey, don’t make Ruben take the blame.”  Since returning to the country, Ruben was still not very talkative, but his facial expressions had become more varied, which had been a sign of improvement.  At least he was starting to care about his family’s emotions.  Edith locked her office door and took them home with one hand holding Ruben and the other holding Jeanne.  Then, she saw a slender figure in a light pink outfit standing at the villa’s entrance.  As Edith got closer, she recognized it was Danika.  “What is she doing here?‘ Edith wondered.  “Ms. Jones! I have made some cupcakes and bagels. I heard Jeanne likes them.”  Having finally seen them return, Danika brightened up a bit and smiled as she handed over a small basket.  “Thank you.” Seeing Danika had no intention of leaving, Edith reluctantly invited her inside.  “Please, make yourself at home. It’s a bit messy here. I hope you don’t mind the clutter.”  Edith quickly tidied up the toys scattered on the carpet by her two children.  Ruben, clutching his backpack, silently went to his room. Meanwhile, Jeanne stood in the middle of the room, glanced around, and decided to follow Ruben’s lead, retreating to her room as well.  She thought, ‘This lady seems gentle, but her daughter is not friendly at all! Better to keep a  1/4  12:31  Chapter 27 distance!‘  Danika looked around the living room, twirling her hair, and casually remarked, “It looks so cozy here. I wanted to go for this style too, but Joyce’s dad didn’t like it.”  Edith’s brows twitched slightly.  She thought sarcastically, ‘She waited at the door all this while just to say this?‘  Unable to figure out Danika’s intention, Edith replied nonchalantly, “A friend helped me choose the house. I didn’t really ask for details.” As they sat and talked, their conversation was tepid and somewhat uneasy. It was filled with an unspoken, indescribable awkwardness.  Unaware of the underlying tension, Danika continued to smile, and her dimples added to her gentle appearance.  “Actually, I came today to tell you Joyce is transferring schools. I had hoped she could spend more time with your kids, but Joyce’s dad found an international bilingual kindergarten which he thought was more suitable for her.”  Danika sipped her water, her slender fingers delicately tracing the contours of the cup. There was a hint of sadness in her eyes as if she was genuinely upset about the matter.  “That’s good,” Edith said, not out of formality, but sincerely.  She mused, ‘If Joyce transfers schools, then I won’t have to interact with Gideon outside of work.  Both of them then fell silent again.  Realizing Edith was not keen on socializing, Danika tactfully stood up and said, “You’re picking up Mr. Myers from the hospital tomorrow, so I won’t keep you from resting.  “I really envy you two. Even though you’re not married, you both seem closer than me and Giddy. He’s even still busy with work now.”  Hearing this, Edith’s brow twitched even more violently.  She thought in shock, ‘She doesn’t know Gideon is hospitalized. And the most awkward part is that I’m picking him up tomorrow. What kind of bizarre three–person relationship is this?‘  Feeling oddly like she had been caught in an affair, Edith grew increasingly uneasy.  She coughed lightly. “We’re just good friends. Ms. Hayes, you should rest early, too.”  After seeing Danika off, Edith leaned against the door, feeling mentally exhausted.

Chapter 22  “Mrs… Ms. Jones, this is the cold brew Americano Mr. Peterson ordered for you.”  Ray handed over the coffee and then rubbed his hands before speaking. “Mr. Peterson will be done soon. Please have a seat and wait for a moment.”  “Or, I could just leave the report here, and you can contact me if there’s anything amiss.” Saying this, Edith stood up.  Ray hurriedly said, “Ms. Jones, Mr. Peterson has specifically instructed that he wants to be thoroughly briefed on the situation, so…” Edith pressed her lips, realizing it would be rude to refuse any further. “Alright then, I’ll step out.”  Ray closed the door gently and heaved a sigh of relief, recalling the expression on Gideon’s face when he insisted that Edith must be kept waiting.  Ray even wondered what would happen if he failed the instructions today. He might even lose his job tomorrow… In the office, Edith sat on the sofa with a few magazines on the table.  They were about medical topics. Edith casually flipped through one and coincidentally saw a photo of Danika, who had published an academic paper.  He keeps records of even such a trivial matter,‘ Edith thought, lowering her gaze to hide the emotions in her eyes. She told herself not to think about it, yet she couldn’t help recalling what Bonnie had told her about Gideon over the years.  He had neither remarried nor signed the divorce papers.  What did that mean?  Edith’s eyes briefly caught sight of the coffee on the table, frowning. It was once her favorite.  The time passed while she was lost in thought.  Just as Gideon entered the room, he saw Edith’s expressionless face.  “Mr. Peterson.”  Edith stood  Gideon sat at his desk and browsed the report casually. “Why such a hurry?” he asked.  “There are many things to do in the lab, not just artifact restoration.”  Edith responded patiently. Gideon nodded, looking neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.  “Join me for dinner tonight,” he said.  Hearing Gideon’s voice, Edith frowned and firmly declined, “Sorry, I don’t have time.” 1/4  12:27 Chapter 22  Even if she did, she wouldn’t go.  What did Gideon think of her?  How could he calmly ask her to accompany him to dinner as if things were the same as before?  Just as Edith was growing impatient, Gideon spoke again. “Don’t overthink it.  “Let’s just say it’s for work, something related to this project.  “I can’t just go and explain to them why the project suddenly stalled. From a professional standpoint, isn’t this part of your job?” Gideon added.  Knowing she couldn’t win the argument, Edith asked without hesitation, “When is the dinner?” ‘Alright then, let’s say it is for work, she thought. 

Chapter 21 Edith didn’t look back, holding Jeanne and walking away. Ruben glanced at Gideon before they left. Gideon sensed something familiar in that look but couldn’t tell what it was.
