Chapter 40  Gideon shrugged his shoulders, feeling rejected.  “No honest words even for me?”  Besides their superior–subordinate relationship, they were now allies in the same battle.  Edith pressed her lips, choosing not to respond.  Once she committed to something, there was no such thing as failure for her.  Plus, surprises were meant to be revealed at the crucial moment.  Seeing Edith as quiet as a mute, Gideon worried that his barrage of questions was pressuring her. He tried to comfort her. “Even if you can’t fix it, it’s fine. Without my approval, no one can make you leave this project.”  Edith was momentarily taken aback, giving him a complex look.  She suddenly found Gideon unexpectedly handsome when he said that! It was not a good sign.  Meanwhile, Bald Ross overheard the conversation between the two.  He laughed arrogantly. “It seems Ms. Jones is quite good at keeping secrets. Even Mr. Peterson and Mr. Simmons are unaware of the progress in the artifact restoration.”  Gideon glared at Ross, his eyes terrifying, as if they could pierce right through his heart.  His intimidating stare froze Bald Ross‘ laughter into an awkward grimace.  Gideon stated unequivocally, “I trust in Edith’s abilities. There’s no need to worry about the She never lets us down.”  Since when did his people have to endure belittlement from an outsider?  Ray watched from the side, holding back the urge to applaud.  The way Gideon defended his own was imposing and satisfying to witness.  progress.  Not daring to be presumptuous in his presence, Bald Ross muttered, “Fine, I don’t want to waste time. either. Go and get it.”  He knew better to provoke Gideon.  Edith passed by Gideon, whispering.  “Don’t worry. I won’t let you down.”  Gideon couldn’t help but smile faintly.  Her competitive nature hadn’t changed at all from before.  During the few minutes when Edith went to fetch the clay statue, the entrance to the living room. became crowded.  Everyone was eager to know who would win the bet.  Charlie was the most impatient, glancing outside now and then, wondering why it was taking so long…  ‘Is there any problem with the clay statue?‘ he wondered.  Charlie was so anxious that he started pacing, ready to go and find her, when Edith slowly approached, holding a box.  She placed the box on the table but didn’t hurry to open it.  1/3  12-16  Chapter 40  Her hand resting on the lid, she casually asked, “What were the terms of our bet again?”  Bald Ross scoffed. “If you can’t fix the clay statue, pack your things and leave immediately.”  He watched Edith dawdle, his tone rising in frustration.  Bald Ross added, “Ms. Jones, I know you care about your pride. Just say a few nice words to me now, admit that you can’t do it, so you don’t lose face.”  Edith’s fingers arched slightly, casually tapping on the box, creating a tinkling sound.  She countered. “What about you? Are you ready to be at my beck and call?”  Bald Ross‘ impatience grew as he saw Edith was still acting tough. He said irritably, “Enough of the big talk.”  He walked straight to the box and roughly pushed her aside.  Bald Ross muttered, “Just admit it if you haven’t fixed it. You’re young, and if you learn humbly from me, you’ll achieve something in the future.”  He eagerly opened the box.  As everyone exclaimed in astonishment, Bald Ross‘ face turned sullen.  A month ago, the clay statue was so shattered that only a few patterns could barely be made out. Now, it lay intact in the box, glowing under the lights. Its brilliance was akin to a rare treasure. It was breathtakingly beautiful, making it impossible to look away from it.  Bald Ross shook his head, muttering in disbelief, “Impossible… This can’t be real!”  He couldn’t believe that Edith had restored the statue.  Taking the statue out, Bald Ross said, “I heard Ms. Jones did the restoration alone. Did you replace it with a fake one?”  He pulled out a magnifying glass and inspected it closely.  Edith scoffed, “Even if you look at it a few more times, this clay statue can’t possibly be fake.  […]

Chapter 39  Jeanne closed the door and waited for a while, ensuring Edith had returned to her room. After that, she gave Ruben an OK sign.  Time to get started!  Ruben put on his glasses and turned on his laptop. As his fingers rapidly tapped the keyboard, his expression grew more solemn.  Codes fluttered across the computer screen, looking complicated.  Jeanne was utterly clueless. She could only rest her head in her hands and zone out.  By her eleventh yawn, Ruben finally stopped typing.  Drowsy and bleary–eyed, Jeanne looked at the computer. “Ruben, did you find anything?”  She was so sleepy and wanted to sleep badly. If it was too hard, they could continue the search  tomorrow.  Nothing was more important than sleep.  Ruben swallowed nervously, tilting Jeanne’s head to look at the screen closely.  “Stop it, Ruben, what are you doing?” Jeanne complained, shaking her head.  It felt like her neck would snap!  Ruben let go awkwardly, pointing at the screen for her to see clearly.  “Isn’t that just a photo of Gideon and Mommy? What’s so interesting…” Jeanne’s words trailed off as she suddenly noticed the official stamp at the bottom of the photo from the Courthouse.  It was their wedding photo!  Jeanne’s sleepiness vanished instantly, and she perked up. “Gideon and Mommy were married?”  As she spoke, Jeanne realized something was off.  She looked closely at the date and corrected herself. “Gideon and Mommy haven’t divorced?”  “Yes.” Ruben nodded, his face filled with disbelief.  He had thought his mom went abroad alone because of a divorce.  After returning to the country, Ruben naturally assumed that Gideon and Danika had married when he heard Joyce calling Gideon her dad.  But today, upon checking, he discovered that Danika was single, and the marriage certificate between Gideon and Edith was still legally valid.  Besides, Ruben found that the family information for Joyce’s household didn’t include their jerk dad.  Smart as Ruben was, he couldn’t unravel this complex relationship.  “But… But Joyce calls Gideon Dad. We all heard it,” Jeanne said, pinching her cheek growing more confused.  The world of adults seemed so complicated.  Ruben pondered, opened a chat box, and typed a line.  [Let’s ask Mommy some other time. She can’t keep hiding this from us forever. We have a right to know.]  1/4  12:16  Chapter 39  Jeanne continued to rest her chin in her hands, her baby fat squishing together on her face.  “Will it bring up sad memories for Mom?”  That was her biggest concern.  Ruben continued typing on the keyboard.  [Mommy has been working too hard lately. Let’s not bother her with it for now. We’ll talk about it once her work is done. Whatever decision she makes, we need to be there for her.]  However, Jeanne was thinking about something else.  Maybe their parents hadn’t divorced because they were just having a misunderstanding!  Perhaps they would get back together one day.  Jeanne wanted her dad back.  In that case, her dad would be there for them and take care of their mom.  But Jeanne couldn’t make sense of the situation with Danika and Joyce yet and needed to observe  more.  Ruben turned off the computer, urging Jeanne to go to bed.  They had to go to kindergarten tomorrow.  Ruben knew that if they didn’t sleep well, they would end up like his mom, going to the hospital for injections, and he didn’t want that.  Jeanne lay in bed pondering this, not sleeping well all night. The next day, she descended the stairs clinging to the fence, moving like a boneless cat.  Bonnie was called back to work by her family. The company had too much work to handle, and she couldn’t come to visit Edith. So, they hired a nanny to prepare daily meals.  Noticing Jeanne’s listless appearance, the nanny exclaimed in surprise, “Oh my, what happened? Are you sick too?” 

Chapter 38  When Shane entered the ward with Ruben and Jeanne, Edith had just calmed her emotions.  She looked at them and asked, “Why are you guys here?”  Shane placed a basket of fruits and flowers on the table and gently explained, “Victor was worried about you being alone in the hospital, so he called me.”  “Mommy, I was so worried about you!”  Jeanne, with tears in her eyes, rushed to embrace Edith’s arm, sadly saying, “If something happened to you, Ruben and I would be orphans!”  Edith was somewhat speechless. Jeanne overreacted a bit.  Ruben also looked at her with a worried expression.  “It’s alright, I’m fine. You two aren’t going to be orphans just yet,” Edith said, pulling the two little ones into her arms.  Shane watched them with a smile, quietly peeling an apple at the side.  Jeanne kicked off her pink Mary Jane shoes and climbed onto the bed, snuggling into Edith’s embrace.  It was the only way Jeanne felt safe.  The nurse came in to check up. Seeing Edith in good condition, she smiled, “This afternoon, when you were unconscious, Mr. Peterson was almost out of his mind with worry. Oh, and your medication was personally fed by him.”  Edith was eating the apple Shane peeled and choked when she heard this, causing her to cough violently.  Ruben quickly patted her back while Jeanne instinctively passed her water.  They were used to their mother often choking like this.  After catching her breath, Edith asked the nurse, “He fed me my medicine? Are you sure about that?”  “He is Mr. Peterson! How could I be mistaken?”  The nurse wore a strange expression. “You needed to drink an oral rehydration solution, and I was. about to wake you up, but Mr. Peterson said to let you rest and that he had a way to feed you the medicine and asked me to leave.  “Look! The paper cup used for the medicine is still on the table.”  Looking where the nurse pointed, Edith saw an empty paper cup.  So, how had Gideon managed to give her the medicine?  Edith hadn’t felt a thing!  The nurse recorded her temperature in the medical chart before she left. Edith sat on the bed, scratching her head in confusion.  Jeanne swayed Edith’s arm. “Mommy, we saw Gideon on our way here. He said he wasn’t here to see you. Why did he lie?”  “Let’s not talk about him,” Edith said, her face showing deep resentment.  Shane lifted Jeanne off the bed, saying softly, “Jeanne, how about we let Edie rest a bit.”  After settling the kids, he turned back to Edith, speaking earnestly. “Just focus on resting for now. I’ll  1/4  12:15  Chapter 38  take care of you and won’t let Gideon trouble you.”  Edith waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t worry. He can’t trouble me. He’s just worried that if something happens to me, it will affect the reputation of the Peterson Group, especially with all the news about employees dying from overwork in recent years.”  Unable to understand Gideon’s motivations, Edith could only link his actions to the company’s reputation.  She didn’t want to trouble Shane by making him run back and forth.  Shane was busy mentoring graduates and was overwhelmed with their thesis during this period.  Shane wasn’t surprised about his suggestion being rejected again. His eyes, hidden beneath the gold–rimmed glasses, were downcast.  He sighed, “Edie, you’re always so strong. Sometimes, I just don’t know how to help you.”  Edith always felt that there was more to Shane’s words, but they were too subtle for her to grasp.  She smiled faintly, “You don’t have to do anything for me. We’re good friends, and I like how things are between us.”  ‘Good friends… he thought.  The disappointment in Shane’s eyes grew even stronger.  He wanted more than friendship, but why couldn’t Edith see that?  Shane was about to say something when Jeanne suddenly announced, “Mommy, I’m taking Ruben to the bathroom!”  Edith peeked out, amused by Ruben doing the pee dance and his tiny clenched fists.  He must have held it for a long time..  Edith pointed toward the door, instructing, “The bathroom is in the small room to the left.”  Although her ward was a single room, the bathroom was shared with the next ward. There were no independent suites in the hospital due to the shortage of rooms. 

Chapter 37  Edith glanced at the back of her hand, where the IV needle had been removed and a bandage  applied. It still hurt a bit when she pressed on it.  Taking a deep breath, Edith appeared indifferent. “If you won’t admit it, that’s fine. I have no interest in rehashing the past with you.”  The past had passed, and talking about it wouldn’t make any changes.  Gideon found himself at a loss for words.  It was better when Edith was asleep. She would only argue with him when awake!  Seeing him gritting his teeth in frustration, Edith felt her mood lift considerably.  When the sun gradually set, the room grew dim and cold. The automatic lights in the ward turned  Feeling uncomfortable under his gaze, Edith spoke first. “I’m fine, really. Mr. Peterson, you don’t need to worry about me. You should go back.”  Gideon, however, didn’t move.  “Where’s… What about Shane? Why isn’t he here taking care of you?”  He had wanted to ask, “Where’s your husband?” But he couldn’t bring himself to say it.  After all, he was officially Edith’s husband as they were still legally married.  Edith paused, puzzled by his words.  The last thing she needed was unexpected concern from an ex…  Edith responded casually, “He’s busy. I can handle a slight illness like this myself.  “Mr. Peterson, isn’t it inappropriate to pry into an employee’s private life?”  Gideon looked at her, his tone mocking. “I thought he cared about you more than that.”  It seemed that was it, nothing more.  Although he didn’t remember the incident Edith mentioned about him not taking care of her when she was ill and hospitalized, he at least hired a nursing assistant. On the other hand, Shane hadn’t even made a phone call. Gideon wondered what Edith saw in Shane and why she liked him.  Edith was confused by his words. What was this man trying to say?  He had come all this way and sat by her bedside for hours just to mock her choice of a partner?  Edith refused to be outdone.  She retorted, not wanting to show weakness, “I didn’t tell Shane because I didn’t want him to worry. You didn’t tell Ms. Hayes about your stomach pumping last time, did you? Mr. Peterson, you should understand how I feel.”  But Gideon didn’t understand at all.  He didn’t tell Danika simply to avoid trouble, not because he was worried about her getting concerned.  Gideon regretted asking. It just added to his frustration.  He said mockingly, “You really like him, don’t you? You never seemed worried about me getting concerned.”  If Edith weren’t ill, she would have punched him in the face.  When Edith lost her temper, no one could reason with her.  She dismissed him with a stone–cold face. “You can leave now.”  Fully baffled by her, Gideon frowned in confusion, “What are you upset about?”  “I’m not upset.” Edith turned her face away, not wanting to see him, feeling inexplicably wronged deep inside.  Edith believed she had done quite well during her marriage to Gideon.  If it wasn’t a severe illness, she never bothered Gideon. Edith would take a taxi and go to the hospital alone. This independence extended to her everyday life as well.  Just because she didn’t speak of it didn’t mean it hadn’t happened.  Once, Edith went to the supermarket and wanted to cook a meal for Gideon. However, there was a heavy downpour on her way back. The roads were impassable, and pedestrians took shelter at the supermarket entrance, waiting for the rain to stop.  Edith just stood there for two hours. When she finally managed to hail a taxi, the driver was delayed and eventually canceled the ride. Just as she was about to book another ride, her phone suddenly shut down.  Edith remembered Gideon’s number. She thought about contacting him for a moment but was worried about disturbing his work.  That day, she walked home for forty minutes, arms laden with fruits and vegetables.  Her arms ached, but she endured it and prepared a meal for Gideon.  Gideon, however, was completely oblivious to her discomfort. He only commented that the vegetable soup was a bit too salty and suggested leaving the cooking to the housekeeper.  His indifferent tone put out all her enthusiasm.  At that moment, Edith felt an intense pain in her hands, a real, deep pain.  Memories came flooding back.  Edith’s eyes reddened and welled up, yet she held the tears back.  She didn’t want to show her vulnerable side to Gideon anymore.  Gideon stared at her clasped fingers, his eyes downcast. 

Chapter 36  After having a late–night supper, Edith was satisfied and burped on her way home.  She thought she would fall asleep immediately after such a busy day.  But, even after counting sheep up to one thousand and one, she couldn’t fall asleep.  Lying awake, Edith stared at the ceiling, feeling gloomy.  She couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason for her restlessness.  Meanwhile, Gideon was also in the same state with her.  Although they were in different places, both of them suffered from insomnia, watching the moon until dawn.  Due to staying up all night, Edith experienced low blood sugar while searching for materials at the museum in the morning.  Deborah was responsible for the museum’s event and noticed Edith couldn’t stand steadily. She quickly helped Edith sit down and handed her a piece of chocolate, saying, “You should take a break.”  “Thank you,” Edith replied, rubbing her eyes.  Deborah crossed her arms, looking at her with amusement. “I heard you made a bet with Bald Ross. Quite bold, aren’t you? Trying to make a name in the circle?”  Bald Ross was a nickname for Bald Ross Reed given by his peers.  The bet they made had already become a hot topic in the circle.  What would happen when old and new ideas collide? Which one would become the evergreen in archaeology?  The answer would be revealed in a month.  Edith broke off a piece of chocolate and tossed it into her mouth, casually saying, “Ms. Stevens, do you think one should maintain a passion for academia in pursuing scholarly work?”  She had asked this question to many who had offered her business cards and tried to woo her away.  Deborah found it amusing and pondered seriously.  After a few seconds, she smiled and said, “Of course, if it weren’t for the love of it, I wouldn’t have joined the profession. But, personal interests have long tainted some people’s passion.”  Edith smiled, a warmth breaking through her usually calm demeanor.  “I don’t want to become a ruthless businessman just yet, so I must restore this artifact properly.”  Her tone was light, but the determination in her words was unmistakable.  This bet wasn’t about gambling… It was about integrity.  Deborah suddenly felt a surge of inspiration. She had indeed chosen the right person.  “Keep it up. I’m looking forward to seeing this clay statue you’ve restored at a future exhibition,” Deborah said, patting Edith on the shoulder in solid affirmation.  Having rested enough and obtained the needed materials, Edith didn’t linger.  A month passed swiftly.  Bald Ross tried to intimidate her twice and even attempted to sneak a peek at the progress of the artifact’s restoration, but Victor found excuses to send him away each time.  1/4  12:15  Chapter 36  Focused on her restoration work, Edith ran between various museums, sometimes too busy to eat, growing thinner daily.  She overestimated her physical endurance and fainted after completing the last procedure.  “Edith!” Charlie was frightened and quickly dialed for an ambulance.  Due to work, he had to leave after dropping Edith off at the hospital.  In fact, Charlie wanted to stay and take care of Edith.  However, Edith told him not to worry and said, “I’m fine. Go back and finish up your work.  “But…are you sure you’ll be okay alone in the hospital?” Charlie hesitated at the doorway.  Edith nodded. “My friend is coming over soon.”  “Alright, call me if you need anything.” Charlie left in a hurry.  The door closed, silencing all sounds.  Edith didn’t inform any friends.  She could only call Bonnie and Shane, but she didn’t want to worry them.  The doctor said insufficient rest and high–intensity work caused lack of blood supply in her heart and thus a brief shock.  It wasn’t a severe issue. A few days of rest and IV fluids would have her back to normal.  Edith closed her eyes and drifted off into a heavy sleep.  Of course, this news reached Gideon’s ears.  He received the message in the middle of a meeting and immediately terminated the session.  Ray had to jog a few steps to catch up with him, anxiously saying, “Mr. Peterson, this is a shareholders‘ meeting. Leaving might not be the best idea…”  “Rescheduled the meeting for the day after tomorrow.”  After giving this order, Gideon added, “Head to the hospital.”  It was only halfway there that Ray understood what was happening.  No wonder Gideon was in such a rush. 

Chapter 35  Edith began to work overtime day and night.  Everyone in the laboratory had left, but the light on her desk was still on.  Gideon’s car passed by the roadside, and he saw a bright light inside, which attracted his attention.  Ray slowed down the car, sighed deliberately, and said. “Mrs. Peterson worked really hard to restore that clay statue. She is still in the laboratory at such a late time.”  “You mean Edith?”  Gideon murmured subconsciously, forgetting to correct Ray’s address toward Edith.  He motioned for Ray to pull over and said in a deep voice, “I’ve told Victor that the staff in the project team don’t have to work overtime.”  The work intensity of archaeological members was different from that of ordinary office workers. In the early stages of the project, the senior management would set the working time to ensure the staff members were fully engaged in work and didn’t work overtime unless necessary.  The lights in the laboratory were always on these days. Gideon thought the security guard had forgotten to turn them off, but he didn’t expect Edith to be inside.  Ray said helplessly, “You should know Mrs. Peterson. No one can persuade her, and she is working so hard for you.  “I heard the members from the project team that Mrs. Peterson didn’t want you to be deceived by the expert panel, so she took the initiative to take over the work. She couldn’t bear to let you down, so she worked overtime every day in the laboratory to restore the cultural relics.”  The last part was made up by Ray.  No one on the project team had said it, and everyone knew Edith was a workaholic.  A trace of surprise flashed across Gideon’s eyes. He retrained himself and said indifferently, “Does she think she can make up for what she did in the past?”  “Mr. Peterson, shall I buy some food for Mrs. Peterson?” Ray asked, pointing to the diner on the roadside.  Gideon glanced at him expressionlessly.  The atmosphere in the car tensed up.  Ray thought he had said something wrong and immediately started the car. He asked, “Shall we leave then?”  “I’ll go upstairs. Stay in the car.” Gideon opened the door and walked to the laboratory.  He hesitated for two seconds, walked around to the other side of the road, and bought a hamburger before going upstairs.  The takeout bag with cartoons created a sharp contrast against Gideon’s dignified and aloof temperament.  He just wanted to throw the takeout bag on Edith’s desk quickly.  He didn’t even know why he walked to the diner before going upstairs.  Gideon remembered Edith seemed to be fond of hamburgers in the past.  Edith once caught a cold and had a high fever. She lay in bed at home for several days and didn’t  have any appetite, making her lose a lot of weight. In the middle of the night, she suddenly wanted to eat a hamburger and begged him to buy it.  1/4  12:15  Chapter 35  Even though Gideon complained a few words, he still went to buy hamburgers for her. The temperature that night was only 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but he drove for nearly an hour to go to Edith’s favorite restaurant in the university town and bought a hamburger. Then, he put it on the bedside table with a look of disgust.  In order not to admit that he had done such a stupid thing, he even lied to Edith that it was a takeout.  Gideon couldn’t help but smile as he recalled.  It seemed he had some nice memories of those years of their marriage.  Gideon thought Edith was the only one in the laboratory, so he went straight in without knocking on the door.  “What are you doing?” He caught Shane’s hand on Edith’s shoulder, and they stood very close.  Edith was startled and pushed Shank away instinctively.  She felt guilty for no reason and changed the subject. “Why did you come in without knocking?”  Gideon said with a gloomy face, “The door is not closed.”  If he had knocked on the door, he might not have seen this.  The atmosphere seemed to freeze.  Edith noticed Gideon was holding something in his hand and glanced at it. “What are you doing here?”  ‘Did he come to inspect my work at such a late time?‘ she wondered.  Gideon noticed her gaze and hid the takeout behind his back.  He looked at Shane and Edith standing side by side and then said after a while, “Someone reported that the lights are on in the office every night, so I came over to take a look.  “What? Did I interrupt your date?”  Gideon’s tone at the end sounded a little mocking.  He thought Edith was concentrating on restoring the cultural relics and was worried she would be 

Chapter 34  Edith didn’t know Gideon had been struggling all night about why she didn’t reply to his message.  Three hours later, the alarm clock rang.  Edith went to the laboratory with the complete restoration diagram.  “You actually did it!”  “You’re a real dark horse. I haven’t seen such a complete 3D modeling diagram in a long time?  “Don’t cheer too loud. This is just the beginning of the restoration work.”  Edith’s colleagues surrounded the modeling diagram and discussed with excitement.  Edith went back to her office to change clothes and started a new round of work.  The clay statue could withstand high temperatures but was fragile in front of collisions, so restoring it was a massive task.  The cleaning work had been completed after the cultural relics were unearthed. What Edith needed to do next was stick the pieces together, fill in missing parts, restore the colors, etc.  She was immersed in her work and didn’t know Ruben and Jeanne had become famous in kindergarten.  Ruben won the admiration of teachers and children because he helped a teacher fix a computer  virus.  “Ruben, why did you know that stuff?”  “How about coming and playing with us? Don’t sit there silently.”  “My mommy said you are sick, but you look smarter than us. What kind of disease is it? I also want to have it, so my mommy won’t say I’m stupid every day.”  The teacher was amused, but she quickly interrupted them when hearing the children’s blunt words. “Class begins. Go back to your seats!”  The teacher felt it was impolite to say Ruben was sick in front of him, while Ruben didn’t take it to heart.  He had long accepted that he was different from ordinary people. Besides, his classmates didn’t mean any harm.  The teacher was about to give a handicraft class when someone knocked on the door. It was the dean of studies.  “Ms. Brown, can talk to you for a second? Joyce was a student in your class before, right? Her parents came over to go through the transfer procedures and get back some handicrafts that were left in the school.”  “Okay, I’ll be there right away.” The teacher told the children to draw in class and left quickly after finding Joyce’s previous handiwork in the cabinet.  Jeanne glanced out the window from time to time and couldn’t focus on drawing at all.  “Do you want to go?” Ruben saw through her mind and stuttered.  Jeanne’s eyes suddenly lit up. She said expectantly, “Can I? I want to see Gideon.”  She was interested in anything related to Gideon.  Besides, she wanted to find out what kind of person Gideon was as soon as possible, and she was curious about what happened in the past that led to the divorce of Edith and Gideon.  1/41  12:14  Chapter 34  Ruben pointed to the back door and motioned for Jeanne to sneak out quietly.  They bent over and moved slowly toward outside while the classmates were not paying attention.  Jeanne thought it was very funny and almost laughed out loud, but Ruben covered her mouth in time.  If they were found by others, their classmates would definitely follow them out.  Ruben didn’t want to get criticized by the teacher as he just got the sticker yesterday.  “Ruben, I don’t know where the office is…” Jeanne stood in the aisle and looked at the three forks with embarrassment.  She had a poor sense of direction and had never been anywhere in kindergarten except the classroom and the playground area.  Ruben took her hand and walked towards one of the forks.  Before the start of school, Ruben had already figured out the route of this kindergarten. He even knew where the principal’s wig was hidden, not to mention the office.  Ruben and Jeanne were squatting at the door of the office. Danika was talking politely to Nina, and Gideon was sitting on the sofa without saying a word.  Jeanne poked her head to look inside, revealing the bun on top of her head.  Gideon caught a glimpse of it and found it interesting. He couldn’t help but be attracted by it.  ‘A kid sneaked out during the class?‘ he wondered.  Jeanne met his gaze and hurriedly lowered her head.  She thought nervously, ‘We’re screwed. He discovered me before I overheard any news!‘  Jeanne grabbed Ruben’s hand and ran away.  Gideon excused himself to have a work call and chased after them.  He found Ruben and Jeanne at the corner of the first floor and, lowering his head, said, “Why are you two little kids running away?”  Ruben didn’t like to be called a little kid and stared at Gideon with a frown.  “We didn’t run away. Gideon, why are you here?

Chapter 32 In the silent night, even the brief notification sound from the phone seemed unusually clear. Gideon then pulled over to the side of the road. He saw that the message was from Ray. Chapter 31  Edith pulled Jeanne back into her seat and covered her mouth.  “No, it’s not like that. Don’t talk nonsense,” Edith said.  Jeanne protested with muffled sounds of discontent while attempting to push Edith’s hand away.  She pondered in annoyance, ‘Gideon hasn’t even answered yet!‘  Gideon glanced at them through the rearview mirror and then changed the subject.  “After some exploration, it has been confirmed that there are a lot of valuable artifacts buried beneath the historic district. The board was worried that you might be short–handed, so they’ve dispatched a few people from abroad to assist you.”  Edith then thought of the several foreigners she had seen in the laboratory that afternoon.  She thought, ‘Having help will make my job easier, which is a good thing.’  Just as Edith was about to feel relieved, Gideon’s voice dampened her excitement like a bucket of cold water.  “However, I think they lack the ability to handle this meticulous work and have already sent them back. So, until the new assistants arrive, you’re responsible for these tasks.”  Edith was rendered speechless.  Edith felt a tightness in her chest, a mix of frustration and disbelief, which made her cough uncomfortably.  She thought angrily, ‘Wasn’t he who doubted I couldn’t even write a proper report this afternoon? And now he’s dumping all the work on me? No one changes their mind as fast as he does!‘  Edith glared at Gideon. “You did this on purpose, didn’t you? Knowing full well this is when we’re short–handed, yet you still sent them away.”  She couldn’t think of any other way to describe this behavior except as a spiteful revenge. Gideon’s hand, which was resting on the steering wheel, tightened involuntarily.  He wondered, ‘Why is she blaming me again?‘  Gideon then intentionally provoked her, saying, “Is it that you think you can’t complete the project? If so, I can request a replacement from the association anytime.”  “Of course I can!” Edith retorted without hesitation.  The moment she learned of the value of the artifacts in the historic district, any thoughts of leaving vanished instantly.  Gideon was pleased with Edith’s response and nodded. “Then follow the arrangement.”  Edith felt like she was being manipulated again, which made her feel defeated.  She mused, ‘Why can’t I ever outsmart this archfiend, Gideon?‘  After much effort, Jeanne finally freed herself from her mother’s grasp and regained her ability to speak freely.  She blinked, her thick, long eyelashes briefly casting soft shadows, making her look like a fairy in  cartoons.  Quick to catch on, Jeanne asked, “Were they the two ladies we met in the elevator?”  Gideon didn’t want to discuss it, but seeing her eager eyes, he could only nod and say, “One of them  1/4  Chapter 31  was an assistant.”  Smiling, she made a finger heart.  “You sent them away, not to trouble Mom, but to stand up for me.”  Jeanne pondered, ‘It seems Gideon isn’t as bad as I thought. He’s quite caring!  Gideon didn’t respond and just drove in silence.  He thought, ‘I can’t outright admit it, can I? Edith would read too much into it if I did. Apart from being rude to Jeanne, those assistants really weren’t up for the job.  “In the elevator? Stand up for you? What happened?” Edith was baffled and thought, ‘I must have missed something significant!‘  Gideon then brought the car to a sudden halt.  With that, Edith’s body jolted forward so violently that her nose hit the backrest, and her eyes. immediately watered with pain.  She pondered, “Thank goodness my nose is real, or it would have been crooked after such a hit.  Gideon opened the car door. “Nothing happened. We’re home, get out.”  “What?” Edith looked at him skeptically, wondering, “This doesn’t make sense! She then turned to Jeanne and asked, “Tell me, what has happened?”  Jeanne stuck out her tongue, with an innocent look on her face.  “It’s nothing, just a little secret between me and Gideon. Don’t ask anymore, Mommy.”  She didn’t want to worry Edith.  Edith was disheartened to see her little girl already starting to side with others.  Afterward, she, along with Jeanne and Ruben, got out of the car, and Gideon drove away.  The Rolls–Royce he drove then disappeared into the dark street.  ‘He didn’t go to see Danika and her daughter?‘ Edith thought, standing at the crossroads, looking flustered.  She then pondered, ‘Could Jeanne have guessed it right? Did Gideon pretend it was convenient to drive us, but actually, he intended to take us home…”  The thought sent a shiver of fear through Edith.  She thought in disbelief, “That’s impossible! Absolutely impossible! Gideon isn’t that kind–hearted.  Having just
