Chapter 72 Any sense of drowsiness vanished entirely, and Larissa was very much awake. She no longer had the mood to read the rest of the messages and retrieved her tablet from the bedside table drawer. She then found last night’s episode of ” The Mediators Room”. Travis’ parents arrived at the set as the […]
Chapter 71 She clenched her fists, her nails digging into the flesh of her palms, and she used the pain to remind herself to remain clear-headed at all times. It would not do for her to lose her composure. “I have always had a clear conscience in anything that I do,” she said. “I’m sorry;
Chapter 70 Larissa spent half the night convincing Dylan that she was not familiar with Sharon, and would never do anything like leaking his private phone number to another When Dylan left, she heard him snarl angrily, “Kevan, that fucking son of a bitchr For almost half a month, life was peaceful. Dylan delivered the petition and other documents to the court, who, after reviewing the case, had it filed for record and sent a copy of the petition to Travis. Now that definitely stirred up the homet’s nest, and Travis‘ parents made an appearance again after having gone off the grid for a long time. Except, they did not appear in person, but rather got the production crew of ‘The Mediators Room” of the Covenford Local TV Station to find Larissa at the Regal Dynasty. The crew wore work ID cards of the TV station and did not identify themselves at first. They only said that due to the requirements of the show, they wanted the housekeeping manager to cooperate with them. Coincidentally, the lobby manager was not present today. Only two inexperienced young girls were available. These girls had never seen this sort of thing before and only got super excited at the fact that people from the TV station had come. Not only did they allow the crew to go upstairs, but they even happily detailed the exact location of Larissa’s office. Larissa had been working on a report when she heard someone knock on her door. She thought that it was strange as rarely did people come to her office. Usually, she would just be here alone working on documents and such. Confused, she said, “Come in.” The door opened to admit a man and two women, and Larissa knew none of them. She stood up anxiously and asked, “Is there something you need?” who could get in here were normally hotel guests. The fact that they found ice meant that whatever issue they had was rather serious. Larissa was just trying to figure out their motives when the spectacled, short–haired woman who entered first displayed her work ID tag to her and said, “Good day, Ms. Seymour. We’re the editors of Covenford Local TV Station’s program, The Mediators Room‘.” Chapter 20 “The Mediators Room” was one of Covenford’s most highly viewed programs with nearly ten years of history. The show mainly helped mediate the troubles of the common folk, and sometimes promote national policies and regulations. Many middle–aged and elderly people loved its down–to–earth content. Many of the janitors in the Regal Dynasty were middle–aged women in their 40s. Larissa frequently heard them talking about the show’s contents from the day before when she took her meals with them, so she knew a little about the program even if she had never seen a single episode. She just did not understand why the program’s editors would find her. She kept quiet and waited for elaboration on their side. “We are here on behalf of your mother–in–law, Ms. Janine Levange, to invite you to join our program and address the misunderstanding between the both of you.” Larissa had dreamed of being on TV when she was a kid too, but she never thought that this would be how it went. She only felt that it was utterly ridiculous as to how her ex–mother–in–law could easily turn such a huge conflict into a mere ” misunderstanding“-and she certainly admired her for it. “Forgive me, I refuse.” Larissa denied their request. “Ms. Seymour, please consider it. Our show and your mother–in–law are sincere.” The short–haired editor tried to persuade her. “My apologies.” Larissa had no intention of giving them the room to discuss it, and she opened her office door to get them to leave. The other female editor, a long–haired woman, suddenly asked her, “Ms. Seymour, are you refusing to join the show because of your guilt? After your husband was paralyzed from the car crash, you never took care of him at the hospital, and never even bothered to visit. Now that you’re trying to get rid of this burden, you sued him and wanted a divorce. You should know that this isn’t a humane thing to do, right?” – words were harsh, and her eyes were filled with scornful disdain toward Larissa.
Chapter 69 “I feel like it doesn’t make a difference even if I pretend to be your girlfriend,” she said seriously. Those who would willingly try to get in his pants would likely have low to no morals. Kevan having a girlfriend would not stop them from trying, and they may even delude themselves into thinking they could fight for the chance to be with him. “How would you know that there would be no difference if you haven’t even tried it yet?” Kevan was more optimistic than her, however. “Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to do everything a proper girlfriend should. You just need to do what you did today and show up to events with me. That should deter the women who have ideas about me.” The banquet today was not that hard to get through–it would have been even better if those two ladies did not come looking for trouble. If it really were all like today… “Fine.” Larissa decided that she would be a quiet wallflower at Kevan’s side to pay off the 1.5–million–dollar debt. “But let’s iron out the details; how long will this last?” She could never let her guard down when making deals with Kevan. “Last?” Kevan was quiet for a moment. “Six months?” “Isn’t that too long?” Larissa found it hard to even imagine herself by Kevan’s side for six months. Kevan’s eyes became cold, as if he was dissatisfied at her bargaining. “It’s only a fraction of the time you intended to pay off the dress via monthly installments. Besides, I won’t have events like these every month.” He paused as a mocking smile appeared on his face. “But of course, I don’t mean to force you to agree. If you’re not willing, you may feel free to pay me back tomorrow.” He was clearly forcing her to agree! But she just did not have the ability to resist. Gritting her teeth, Larissa snapped, “Fine then; six months it is!” V on’s fist slowly loosened in his pocket. “Then I’ll have Dylan prepare the contract row.” Kevan did exactly what he said he would. The next night, Dylan delivered the contract that the former had already signed. The contract was a simple one–page affair. The contents were simple too. It stipulated the duties that Larissa should do (pretend to be Kevan’s girlfriend while attending public events with him), and listed out the benefits that she would gain ( exemption from having to pay for the 1.5–million–dollar debt) as well as the validity period of the contract (six months). Everything was written down clearly without any subterfuge, and so Larissa signed it. Dylan gave her a copy of the contract while he carefully put away the one that belonged to Kevan. After having some water, he said, “I’ve prepared all the necessary legal documents for your lawsuit against your former husband. Just let me know when you’d like to have them sent over to the court. Larissa was quite worried. “But he can’t even leave the hospital right now. If I sue him, will the trial still proceed smoothly?” “It’ll be fine as long as his attorney is there,” Dylan said. “But I don’t think he has the money to hire one now…” Larissa was frustrated whenever she thought of the lawsuit. Sometimes, she even wished she could have just taken the losses as they were and gotten that divorce certificate in return. Then she could stop being
Chapter 68 Phrases like “fulfill a request of mine” oftentimes contained a huge trap. Although Kevan was not a bad person, he was definitely no angel either. She would never dare delude herself into thinking of taking advantage of him, because she knew that this was impossible. So, she said, “It’s better if I transfer the money to you.” However, Kevan’s attitude was not as aggressive as she thought. He even changed his mind after her words, saying, “Sure then. Transfer 1.5 million to me tomorrow.” “What?!” Larissa thought she might have misheard. “1.5 million?” She felt like an inexperienced and naive person at this moment, complaining loudly. “Isn’t it just a dress? Why is it so expensive?” But deep down, she knew that the gown really was that expensive. “If you suspect that I’m lying to you, I’ll have Vivian send you a picture of the receipt later.” Kevan looked at Larissa. He was as cool as a cucumber. Well, since he said so, Larissa could no longer question him like this. However- “I don’t have that much money at the moment,” she said with some embarrassment. Could I pay you back in installments? Or wait until my lawsuit with Travis is finished? Once I get the house, I’ll sell it and pay you back all at once.” “Installments?” Kevan raised an eyebrow with some disdain. “What’s your monthly salary? Twenty thousand? Even if you don’t eat, you still have to wait a few years before it is all cleared, right? As for the lawsuit between you and Travis–with his current condition, how long do you think it’ll take before he can accept any inquiries from the court?” Larissa was struck speechless by his questions, “My apologies, Ms. Seymour. Even if you can wait for that long, I’m afraid I can’t.” Kevan rejected her installment payment plan suggestion at once. bl Larissa felt that she was standing at a fork in the road, but one of the paths had been off entirely. Before she knew it, the elevator had reached the 19th floor, and sopened with a ding. Larissa looked out, but she could not step out of the 11 elevators. They remained in a deadlock, and Kevan clearly had no intention of backing off. Larissa hesitated and struggled before asking, “What do you mean by fulfilling a request‘ of yours?” If he broached the topic now, she may consider it. If he insisted on getting a promise from her first, she would do whatever it takes to gather 1.5 million dollars for him. Seeing that she had relented, Kevan’s smile became a little obvious. “It’s simple,” he said. “Pretend that you’re my girlfriend.” “What?!” This was even more shocking than the 1.5 million dollars earlier. “Why?” She really could not understand. A man like Kevan could have any woman he liked. If he wanted, he could have a real girlfriend as well! Why would he need her to pretend? It was so unnecessary. Kevan tugged on his tie, his face
Chapter 67 As for the second question… “I was going to tell you, but Ms. Davis said you went to the backyard…” Larissa thought about it before deciding not to tell him what else Sharon had told her. “I did not want to disturb you.” Hearing this, Kevan frowned so deeply that the creases in his forehead could probably kill a fly. “Why do you need to pay for your former husband’s medical fees? Where is his family?” The moment this was brought up, Larissa got angry. “His parents ran off without him. The nurse could only contact me.” “They only dared run off precisely because they knew you would come.” Kevan laughed coldly. “Larissa, tell me, is your brain waterlogged?” Larissa reacted very quickly. This was Kevan insulting her for being an idiot! Although she was mad, she knew that he was right. “If you didn’t pay for it, see if they’d really leave their son behind.” It was not as if Larissa had never thought of competing with Travis‘ parents on who could be more ruthless, but considering their characters… She was afraid of that off- chance that they might really leave their son behind. If something really happened to Travis because of his treatment being halted, she would be subject to public criticism -after all, she was not divorced from Travis yet. “Or…is it because you can’t bear to leave your former husband behind?” Kevan’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous, wintry glint in them. “Even if he had hurt you, betrayed you, and stolen the only asset you had as well as nearly leaving you homeless, you are still committed to him?” His accusation was rather unwarranted and a little outrageous. arissa denied it at once. “I’m not that cheap!” hace was flushed with anger, and her bright eyes were filled with discontent aimed at him. Kevan slowly relaxed as the tension in his body melted away. “It’s best if you aren’t.” His voice sounded calmer. “Stop bothering with any matters 1/3 Chap 47 regarding your former husband,” he ordered. The moment they entered the elevator, the cold seemed to be automatically blocked off from the outside. Larissa removed the jacket and returned it to Kevan. “Thank you, Mr. Rogers.” Seeing the wine stain on her bosom, Kevan recalled the incident that Sharon told him about- “How did that happen?” he asked. Shit! Larissa started and automatically covered her chest, but eventually let her hands fall in dejection after Kevan’s cool glance. “I accidentally spilled some wine,” she said, “When it’s time to return the gown, ask Vivian how much this costs. I’ll pay for it myself.” She had never bought haute couture before, but it did not prevent her from trying to understand the industry. The gown she was wearing right now probably cost a few hundred thousand dollars. Silently calculating the amount she had in her savings…it was likely sufficient. It was just that… After paying for it, she would have to live off bread and water.
Chapter 66 Larissa was a little confused by his stare. She could tell that he was angry, but she did not know what he was angry about. Lucas was completely unaware of what was going on between the two, and he excitedly rushed to Kevan and stuck out his hand. “Mr. Rogers! We meet again.” Kevan had to give him half of his attention, and he made a non–verbal sound of acknowledgment. However, he did not shake Lucas‘ hand, which caused his smile to freeze on his face and the light in his eyes to grow dull. Larissa quickly went over and explained to him. “Mr. Rogers is a germaphobe and doesn’t like bodily contact with others.” Lucas was enlightened, and he withdrew his hand in embarrassment. “My apologies, Mr. Rogers. I have been too forward.” “It’s fine.” Kevan was surprisingly easy to talk to. “Thank you for today.” Flattered, Lucas‘ excitement was written all over his face. He was about to express his adoration and admiration for Kevan to him when the latter said, “Return the jacket to Mr. Hermes. We’re leaving now.” This was clearly meant for Larissa. “Oh, right.” Larissa had just removed Lucas‘ jacket when another was draped over her exposed shoulders. “Let’s go.” Kevan held her wrist, which was cold as usual. But Larissa surprisingly did not feel uncomfortable with it as she used to. Maybe it was because his jacket was rather warm. Even after they had gotten into the car, Lucas stood blankly in the same spot while holding on to his jacket. Suddenly, he smacked his forehead and exclaimed with delight, “I finally know what’s off about it!” Mr. Rogers, supposedly a germaphobe who disliked bodily contact, had voluntarily touched Larissa! He knew that their relationship was more than it seemed! The black Maserati sped on the road so fast that it almost blended in with the night. Chapter 66 Larissa subconsciously gripped the seat belt a little tighter and she asked softly, “Are we going to Vivian’s now?” “No,” Kevan said, and Larissa sighed a little. She planned to go back and try washing the gown. If she could clean it somehow, she could pay less
Chapter 65 Seeing her, Lucas got out of the car immediately. “Ms. Seymour!” He waved at her excitedly, his smile brighter than before. It was as if something good had happened to him, “Was there something else you needed?” Larissa asked him. Lucas kept grinning like a fool for a while before he managed to speak. “Mr. Rogers called me just now! Mr. Rogers! Called! Me! He called me in person!” Larissa patiently listened to his boasting, and only asked him once he finished, “Why did he call you?” “Well, he asked if I was with you, and he also asked where we went.” Lucas told her everything about the conversation he had with Kevan. “I told him I brought you to the hospital, and he told me not to leave and to flag you down when you come out so that he can come pick you up.” “When did Mr. Rogers call you?” Larissa asked with a frown. “The moment you entered the hospital. It was probably like half an hour ago,” Lucas said. Larissa checked the time on her phone. It was after 9 pm now. It would take Kevan at least an hour to get here from that hillside villa. To send her home after… It would be far too late. Not to mention that the banquet probably would not end so early. She quickly called Kevan, who picked up after two rings. “Where are you?” Kevan’s deep voice came through the phone. Even if it was a little distorted, Larissa could tell that he was unhappy. “I’m at the entrance of Victory General with Lucas Hermes,” she replied honestly, “I heard from Lucas that you’re coming over… “Yes. I’m on the way.” Kevan’s voice was accompanied by the sound of the wind howling in the background. “You don’t have to come!” Larissa said quickly, “Lucas can take me home.” The line remained silent for a few seconds before the sound of the wind got stronger. Larissa hunched in on herself and wrapped Lucas‘ jacket tighter around her. “I’m on the way,” Kevan repeated with emphasis. “Wait for me at the hospital entrance. Don’t go anywhere.” He then hung up. Chapter ob Staring at the dimming screen, Larissa did not know what to do. Lucas inched over and asked, “So? Is he still coming?” His eyes were filled with anticipation. Larissa said dejectedly, “Yeah, he’s coming.” Lucas whooped in delight, and he actually jumped up with joy. They sat together in the car, and less than half an hour later, a Maserati arrived with a roar. It attracted a lot of attention from pedestrians. Larissa recognized Kevan’s car immediately. It was the same car that brought her to the hillside villa, but she had never seen him drive so fast. The Maserati parked in front of the Mercedes, and Kevan soon emerged from his car. Larissa consciously got out of Lucas‘ car too. Kevan took two steps forward and stopped, his eyes locked firmly on her. His lips were pressed tightly together, and he definitely looked upset. །
Chapter 64 Lucas was still driving the same silver Mercedes from before, and he drove rather fast with the top down. The temperature uphill was colder than downhill. As Larissa’s arms were bare, she was shivering from the cold wind brushing against her. “Could… Could you…drive slower? Or… Or…close the hood?” She could barely open her eyes. Thankfully Vivian had tied her hair securely, otherwise, she had no idea what kind of mess it would be in. Only then did Lucas pull up the top and turn up the heat. “Sorry, I’m used to speeding like this on my own,” he apologized to Larissa, whose body was gradually warming back up. Her teeth had also stopped chattering too. “Why are you going to Victory General at this time of the night?” Lucas asked her cúriously. “Just… Well, something came up,” Larissa replied vaguely. Knowing that she did not want to talk about it, Lucas stopped asking. About an hour later, the car stopped at the main entrance of the Victory General Hospital. “Thanks for today.” Larissa was about to get out of the car when Lucas stopped her.” Hang on.” He removed his jacket and handed it to her. “It’s cold at night, and you’re not dressed for the cold.” Larissa did not refuse him this time. Her gown was too thin, and the chiffon did nothing against the cold. Although Lucas‘ jacket could only shield her torso, it was still better than nothing. She rushed up to the spinal surgery department. Thankfully, there was no one in the department at night. Otherwise, her strange outfit would have attracted the attention of many. There were a few nurses doing their jobs quietly in the nurse station. Larissa went over and asked, “May I know who is in charge of Travis Hardy?” A nurse looked up and stared at her for quite a while before tearing her eyes away from her outfit. “That’s me,” She said, “Are you Travis Hardy’s…ex–wife?” “Yes.” Larissa nodded and went straight to the point. “Where do I pay?” Chapter 64 you
Chapter 63 This time it was Sharon’s turn to be confused. “You’re leaving? Where are you going?” “Something came up.” Larissa had no intention to tell her more. She simply dipped her head in farewell and said, “Let’s meet again in the future, Ms. Davis.” www Kevan went back to the lounge with a stony face. The scattered crowd began to gather again. However, this time, he no longer had the mood to deal with them and blocked them off without saying anything. “Mr. Rogers!” Sharon, who was sitting before the floor–to–ceiling window, waved at him. Out of everyone in the villa, he was the closest to Sharon, and she was likely the only woman apart from Larissa who did not try to flatter him in any way. Hence, he went over to her and asked in a low voice, “Is there something you needed, Ms. Davis?” Sharon did not hasten to answer his question, but she handed him the other glass of red wine from the table instead. “I wonder if you’d be willing to drink with me.” She smiled, but Kevan’s eyes narrowed as his guard went up. She had never been this warm to him from the day they met until now. There was definitely something fishy going on with this. “Don’t think too much of it, Mr. Rogers.” Seeing that he had not moved, Sharon simply lay her cards on the table. “I just want to make a deal with you about Ms. Seymour.” Hearing Larissa’s last name, Kevan stopped hesitating. He sat down and accepted the wine and said, “Go ahead, Ms. Davis.” Knowing she had guessed right, Sharon’s smile grew bigger. “Give me Dylan’s current personal phone number, and I’ll tell you where Ms. Seymour has gone.” Many people knew about Dylan’s personal phone number. If Sharon really wanted it, she would be able to find it easily–but most certainly not from him. Kevan put his glass down. “My apologies.” Pulling out his phone, Kevan said pointedly, “I don’t need to go through others to find Larissa.” Sharon laughed lightly. “Very well, then.” She waved at him to carry on. “You may call her right here. I don’t mind.” The calmer she was, the more Kevan found it suspicious. He went through his contacts and selected the first one on the list. However, the call never made it through. The robotic message
