Chapter 18  After lunch, everyone gathered for a chat.  Celeste strolled downstairs. She enjoyed a few nibbles of mini–cakes and  sipping on a hint of low–alcohol fruit wine.  As she turned to head back upstairs, she unexpectedly bumped into a  bunch of folks. They were none other than those toffs who like flattering to  Melville family.  Celeste was really not in the mood to deal with them. She planned to simply  sidestep and make her way upstairs.  However, these troublemakers didn’t intend to let her leave so easily.  “Celeste, word on the street is you’ve moved out of Melville family.”  Celeste turned to face them, raising an eyebrow. “So what?”  “We just made a little wager on how long it’ll take for you to move back this  time,” they snickered.  “So, how many days did you guys guess it would take me to move back?”  Celeste asked with curiosity.  “Three days.”  “No, Gavin’s betting on tonight!”  Celeste chuckled, “well, you might be disappointed then.”  She flashed a sneer and said in a cool, firm voice, “I’m betting for a  lifetime.”  As she turned to go upstairs, she collided with Kendric, who was  Redeemed From Caped Love  descending from the upper floor. She had no idea how long he’d been standing  behind her or how much of that conversation he’d overheard.  a the ga  Anyway, he slowly between them, his face gloomy.  Then, he snatched her wrist. Celeste couldn’t break free as he assertively  ushered her into the adjacent lounge.  Noticing them coming in, the lounge’s occupants quickly dispersed. The  door was swiftly shut, and there were only them two in the room.  Her wrist was still in his grasp,  and with a gentle tug, she was drawn closer  to his embrace.  “A lifetime, huh?”  Celeste was feeling quite exasperated. She had never been one for loud  arguments, and she had hoped to handle this breakup with a calm  conversation.  But judging by Kendric’s current behavior, it seemed like he had no  intention of resolving things peacefully.  He gripped her chin, “you’ve been thinking about breakup for a while,  haven’t you?”  Celeste knew that, in reality, whether Kendric agreed or not, breaking up  was inevitable.  He is a proud man. There is no way he’d keep a woman around who no  longer loves him and constantly gives him cold shoulders.  “So, a few days running away from me, and you’ve grew bolder.”  Redeemed From Caged Love  Celeste broke away from his grip. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.  I’m leaving.” 

Chapter 17  As the car pulled up at Melville’s villa, Celeste hopped out and made her  way upstairs.  She had left behind some other valuable stuffs in Melville family, except for  the jewelry gifted by Kendric. Among these items were a bunch of picture  frames, worth a pretty penny.  Their former function was to frame the portraits she painted for Kendric.  Celeste didn’t waste any time and headed straight up to the third–floor  storage room. She opened the cabinet, took out the picture frames, and carefully  selected one.  It’s designed by a well–known artist, with a rectangular shape, gilded  finishes and ornate details. It had elaborated filigree reliefs and four rubies  embedded in the corners.  Celeste examined the picture frame for a while and then removed the  portrait inside without hesitation.  When Kendric came upstairs, he spotted her tossing a painting onto the  floor.  It was his portrait. Kendric wasn’t sure when Celeste had painted it, but it  was quite impressive. Now, it was carelessly discarded on the ground.  His expression became somewhat complicated.  Celeste turned a blind eye to him.  First she bought the picture frame using her own money. Second, in her  eyes, Kendric’s portrait naturally wasn’t as important as the gift for her  Redeemed From Caged Love  teacher.  So she nonchalantly took it out and discarded it without giving it much  thought.  It wasn’t until she had finished framing the painting that she noticed  Kendric frowning at her.  She explained, “I bought this picture frame myself. You can put your  portrait anywhere else,” her tone sounded very laid–back.  Kendric clenched his fist. Finally, he didn’t say anything and handed the  portrait back to her. “Reframe it.”  ***On the way to the party***  Inside the car, the vibe between Celeste and Kendric wasn’t great. It’s like a  thick, transparent wall separated them.  They arrived just around noon.  Kendric stepped out of the car, opened the door and waited for her beside  the car.  When Celeste got out of the car, Kendric reached for her hand, but she  directly walked past him with long strides.  His hand hung in the air.  Foster family wasn’t nobility, but they had earned a lot of respect. Mr.  Foster and Prof. Becker had dedicated their lives to teaching, even though they  didn’t have any kids of their own. Their students had spread to every corner of  the world.  Redeemed From Caged Love  131  impler 17  Today’s birthday party made nearly all their students gathered together.  Kendric and Celeste went their separate ways into the room.  Kendric was instantly surrounded by the crowd, while Celeste joined a few  classmates to find Prof. Becker. 

Chapter 16  In their love story, Kendric’s always the one calling the shots, while Celeste  is the one to follow.  He’s dead certain that Celeste is head over heels for him, so when he  blurted out these words, he couldn’t care less about how she felt.  Because she’s so in love with him, he is given the courage to trample all  over her heart without any consequences.  With all her might, Celeste shoved him away, and the momentum made her  take a step back and plop down on the sofa.  “I… I’ll try my best to stop loving you.”  She stood her ground. “Even if it’s not possible right now… I’m damn well  gonna forget you in the future.”  Kendric’s frosty mask cracked as he heard her declaration.  He tried to hide the turmoil inside him. He said all high and mighty, “you  won’t get a chance.”  He’s not gonna give her a shot at forgetting him, and he sure as hell won’t  let her stop loving him.  That little bit of love left in Celeste’s heart was torn to shreds as well. She  hated the fact that Kendric took her love as poker chips.  This man is powerful and proud. Now, he’s treating her the same way he  treats his rivals in the business field, calculating his own advantages and chips,  and he’s come to one conclusion–she won’t leave him.  “I’ll give you a day to cool off. Day after tomorrow, I’m coming to pick you  Redeemed From Caged Love  up.”  Celeste stared at Kendric, trying to come up with a firm rebuttal. But she  just couldn’t find the words to argue.  No one believed back then that Celeste could be so passionately in love with  Kendric for years, just like now nobody believed she would leave him.  After Kendric left the apartment, Celeste sat alone on the couch like a  statue, hugging her knees.  The sliver moonlight streamed in through the spotless windows, falling on  her. A wave of immense sadness washed over her, almost suffocating her.  How did things get this bad between her and Kendric?  They used to be the closest of lovers. Even when he wasn’t the influential  Mr. Melville he is today, she stood by his side.  For Kendric, the first five years of taking over family business were like  handling a ticking time bomb. No one knew if Melville family was getting better  or worse under his leadership.  Only Celeste invested whole trust on him.  But when Melville family started doing better and Kendric’s ambitions.  grew, it seemed like she became less important.  Honestly, she should have realized this sooner and ceased her waiting. Now  her flame of hope was put out.  Redeemed From Caged Love  The next morning, Celeste went to the studio as usual. Her frequent visits  put pressure on Sienna.  At lunchtime, Sienna brought food over, “tomorrow is Prof. Becker’s  birthday. What should we get him as a gift?”  Celeste quickly checked the calendar. Sure enough, tomorrow was Prof.  Becker’s birthday.  Prof. Becker is Sienna and Celeste’s teacher in college. He’s been teaching  for over twenty years. He’s a person with a great deal of moral and academic  respect.  date!

Chapter 14  “When are you going back?”  Celeste raised her head and caught his composed expression.  They’d been living together for eight years. Her love for him was like a blazing fire, yet still fail to melt his icebound heart. She wholeheartedly  immersed herself in a world revolving around him, so silly.  Celeste’s unusual reaction made Kendric realize something was amiss.  “How long are you going to keep throwing this tantrum?” a faint scowl  appeared on his face.  His words suddenly reminded Celeste of Sienna and others‘ words.  They said with just a look or a few words from Kendric, she’d obediently  grab her luggage and follow him back. She’d go back to the world where  everything revolved around him, where joy and pain were solely brought by  him.  Celeste gazed down at the gleaming floor. Every time she mopped it, she’d  remind herself to forget him.  Now, the floor was cleaned to the extend like pristine one, and her heart  had become a barren land.  Kendric’s gaze wandered around the room, “you like living in a place like  this?”  What did he mean ‘A place like this?”  What’s wrong with a place like this?  Redeemed From Caged Love  He sat on the couch, his hands casually resting on his lap, and assumed the  stance of a negotiator.  “No servants, no gourmet meals, no designer clothes. How could you get  used to it?”  His every word cut deep. All he was talking was about weighing the advantages and disadvantages, rather than her feelings, and their relationship.  As a businessman, his every decision was made through such calculation. How could this calculation be applied to a love thing? Celeste couldn’t fathom  Yet in Kendric’s eyes, it’s foolish for Celeste to give up luxurious  accommodations and opted to live in this modest apartment.  But because it was Celeste, he showed more patience.  “Just be a good girl.”  In the past, those words, “Be a good girl,” acted like a spell.  No matter how depressed, sad, or how much Celeste contemplated leaving  this man, as soon as he uttered those words, she would suppress her emotions  and obediently step into the cage he had built.  Now Celeste only felt like she’d been pricked all over, and all her love  seemed to evaporate.  “Kendric.”  He tilted his head.  Celeste summoned all her strength, “have you ever considered showing me  Redeemed From Caged Love  Chupte M4  any respect or getting to know me better?”  There was a momentary flicker of surprise in Kendric’s eyes. “Why would  you say that?”  Celeste chuckled at her own naive question. The answer is pretty obvious,  isn’t it?  If Kendric held even a speck of respect for her, Gavin Bates wouldn’t dare slap her, Ms. Quinn wouldn’t be treating her so harshly, and Ophelia wouldn’t  have the nerve to move into Melville family.  Kendric seemed a bit irritated, “what kind of respect you are asking for?”  Honestly, he didn’t like this side of Celeste. She was acting way out of character tonight. In the past, every time they met, she would cling to him, softly confessing how much she missed him. She would give him those sweet, heart–melting smiles and even close her eyes and tiptoe for a kiss.  None of that was happening tonight!  He really disliked her tantrums or her deliberate attempt to keep her  distance. 

Chapter 13  Celeste spent the whole day at the studio, busy with work.  In the blink of an eye, it was evening, and she didn’t return to Kendric’s  villa but went straight back to her own small apartment.  Upon arriving home, she tidied up the things she had brought from  Kendric’s home, especially her art supplies.  The sky grew darker.  With her empty stomach growling, she opened her phone and ordered some  takeout.  ****  When Kendric returned home in the evening, he only saw an empty  bedroom. Celeste didn’t come back.  He seemed quite uncomfortable, as he had been accustomed to receiving  her embrace and kisses as soon as he arrived home. But now all of that was  gone.  Kendric was somewhat agitated. He loosened his tie and furrowed his  brow. He was at his wit’s end with Celeste’s recent behavior.  Since last night, when he learned that Celeste had gone to a bar, he had  been restraining his anger. He disliked her showing up in occasions like a  nightclub, especially when it had eventually escalated to a visit to the police  station.  However, this displeasure had mostly disappeared after Celeste obediently  returned home with him. But today, she went to her rented apartment again!  Redeemned From Caped Love  Chapter 13  That lingering displeasure had reignited like adding fuel to the fire.  Kendric put on his coat and went out alone.  It was not yet ten o’clock when the doorbell rang.  Celeste was squatting in the bathroom, washing her paint palette. She  hurriedly washed her hands, ran barefoot out of the bathroom. The touch of the  cold floor sent shivers through her body.  She thought it was her takeout.  When she opened the door, she was surprised to see Kendric standing  outside.  Forrest Gump said life was like a box of chocolates, never know what you’re  gonna get. But at this moment Celeste felt like life wasn’t giving her a chocolate  but a grenade.  Who the hell could tell her why this man is standing outside her home?!  Her heart involuntarily sank. She was paralyzed by fear.  “Why are you here?”  Kendric was seething with anger on his way here, but when he saw  Celeste’s reaction, let’s just say he started feeling happy.  His smile showed he was in a good mood.  They silently stared at each other.  Kendric was waiting for Celeste to come over and give him a hug, just like  they used to do. But to his surprise, she didn’t move a step.  Redeemed From Caged Love  In this awkward standoff, he reluctantly took a step forward to close the  gap between them.  a step  However, Celeste unconsciously took back.  Kendric froze in his tracks as he noticed her subtle retreat. He looked at her  with puzzlement. A hint of displeasure flickered in his eyes- it’s the first time  Celeste rejected him. 

Chapter 12  Upstairs in the bedroom on the second floor, Kendric pushed open the door  while making a phone call.  Celeste was changing into her nightclothes and was caught off guard by his  abrupt entrance. Instinctively, she covered her half–naked body.  His gaze fell on her, and then shifted away..  Celeste breathed a sigh of relief. Celeste decided to discuss the breakup with  him once he finished his call.  As she was brushing her teeth, Kendric followed in again. His tall and sturdy figure made the spacious bathroom suddenly turned cramped.  Celeste noticed he put his suit back on. Was he planning to go out?  She rinsed her mouth and said, “I want a talk with you.”  Clearly, Kendric didn’t have time for this.  He adjusted his tie with one hand, and with the other, he pulled Celeste close, gently planting a kiss on her cheek.  Then, he stroked her soft hair, “I’m an emergency to handle. Be a good girl and wait at home.”  Celeste remained expressionless and silent. For the past two years, this  and conversations had been repeatedly showed up.  scena  Kendric was extremely occupied with his business affairs and family affairs. Melville Group couldn’t function without him, and neither could this family, but Celeste could.  „Chapter 12  She could stay at home, day after day, waiting for him, like a migratory bird  waiting for spring.  The sound of a car starting came from downstairs. A few seconds later, the  gate opened, and the car drove out.  Celeste looked at her reflection in the mirror, pale and downhearted.  Kendric’s perfunctory and insincere farewell kiss made her wake up to  reality.  In fact, whether they broke up or not was no longer important, as she had  never taken a crucial part in his heart.  After washing her face, Celeste returned to the bedroom.  The air in this villa was heavy. This family was like a cage, filled with the smell of dust. Celeste felt hard to breath.  Celeste had a night of nightmares.  Early the next morning, she had a splitting headache.  She watered the flowers she planted outside the yard, and then prepared to go to the studio,  Ophelia had been taken back by her brother this morning. Kendric had given the order last night, and no one dared to disobey his words.  When Ophelia left, Celeste was leaning against the corridor watching her.  Fate likes to play tricks on people. Just a week ago, it was Ophelia’s brother Gavin Bates, who stood in this very not woAT  ChapteM2  Now, a week later, Celeste stood right here watching Ophelia leave, but she  wasn’t gloating or anything.  She was the one to call it quits in her relationship with Kendric, so she still  had some dignity left. But, well, Ophelia humbly begged to stay.  At breakfast, Kendric’s car rolled into the courtyard. The big Maybach  roared like a bulldozer when it parked on the lawn.  back.  Celeste glanced outside for a second, then nonchalantly shifted her gaze  Kendric walked in with his entourage of brain trust who probably had stayed up whole night for overtime. It was a commonplace in family. Kendric might be arrogant, but he values and respects talents, and he usually brings his brain trust members back home and treats them breakfast.  While these elites usually didn’t spare Celeste more than a nod. As usual, they just walked past her and huddled around the dining table.  Seeing them pour in, Celeste had a few more bites of her food and got up to  leave.  “Wait.”  As soon as Kendric entered the dining room, he caught Celeste making a beeline for the stairs. And her breakfast was barely touched. He couldn’t help  but frown. “You’re hardly eating anything.”  “Yeah, I don’t have much appetite today.”  “Sit down and have something else.”
