Chapter 60  “Quinn Fender, I don’t want anyone in this workplace to be hostile to each other. Serenity Lewis certainly has been in prison before, but that is no reason for us to discriminate against her, making it difficult for her to survive. Since you don’t feel comfortable working with her, I think it’s best that you leave this job.”  But… But she was a full–time employee! How could she be fired just like that?! Quinn could hardly believe that it was real, yet she could not deny that it had just happened!  She heard someone urging her, “Say something, Quinn.”  She looked around her, then when her gaze fell on Serenity, she rushed toward her in a burst of outrage. She reached her in one huge stride and yelled, “You! It’s all your fault! If it hadn’t been for you, the director would never have fired me! You’re the one he’s supposed to fine!”  Everyone there was astounded. So the one getting fired had ended up being… Quinn Fender?!  “You’re not joking, are you, Quinn?”  “But how could it be?!  Quinn glared at Serenity with fierce contempt, and she started to raise her hand to hit her. Serenity managed to dodge her, but Quinn seemed to have gone rabid, and she was hell–bent on attacking Serenity.  Just then, sucneune stepped forward and held Quinn back from reaching Serenity.  “Haven’t you had enough? What does Serenity have to do with the director’s decision to fire you, anyway? How can someone in her position ever influence him?”  Quinn turned around and noticed that it was Peter.  Seeing this, the other drivers rushed forward to hold Quinn back too. And just like that, the whole farce ended.  “Thank you,” Serenity said to Peter.  “Don’t mention it,” Peter replied in a voice laced with guilt. “If it hadn’t been for me, she would never target you like that.”  Serenity was about to turn and leave, but Peter suddenly asked, “That guy you called your brother… Is he really your real brother?”  Serenity stared at Peter, slightly taken aback by the question.  Peter then stammered, “I just.. I just feel like.. The two of you don’t look like siblings.”  When he first saw them together, for some reason, it seemed more to him like they were lovers, not siblings.  “We’re not related by blood,” she told him, but he is family to me,  Family, huh? Peter still could not believe it. Even if she did think of him as family, what about that guy…? Did he think of her as family and nothing else?  The way that guy looked at Serenity, Peter could clearly see signs of possessiveness in his eyes, and it was definitely not the way abrother looked at his sister!  “Are you listening to me, Zeke  Jenny had to raise her voice when she asked Zele the question. He had been acting oddly distracted that whole day, even to the point where she had to repeat what she said a few times, and even then he did not seem to be listening to her.  “Ah!” Zeke exclaimed, coming abruptly back to his senses. “What were you saying?  “What’s wrong with you today?” Jenny grumbled. “If you’re going to act this way tomorrow when try on the dress, I’m just going to find someone else to accompany me!!  2/2  “Jenny, I suddenly thought of something urgent that I need to attend to immediately!”  As he spoke, he shot up to his feet and rushed out of the private lounge in a great hurry.  Jenny did not even have the chance to ask him anything before he was gone. Now, she was left all alone in the spacious private lounge with a huge table full of food. Her expression was twisted by displeasure. What could be so urgent that it made him abandon her like that?! He seemed to be a completely different man compared to the tender way he usually treated her!  Meanwhile, Zeke made a call to his secretary while driving and instructed, “Go to the Sanitation Office and get me Serenity Lewis’s current address now!  Not long afterward, his secretary sent Serenity’s address to Zeke’s mobile phone. He then took off to her place at top speed. 

Chapter 59  Serenity furrowed her brows Was Zeke asking about… Jack?  “You should really mind your own business, Mr. Shaw. I was only with my brother yesterday. Do I need to report to you about that too?”  “Brother?” asked Zeke. “Since when did you have a brother?”  As far as he knew, the only sibling Serenity had was a younger sister.  “He’s a brother to me,” she replied, “and that’s all that matters. Do you have any problem with that?”  Zeke studied Serenity’s face, almost as if he was trying to determine the truth of her words from her expressions.  Just then, Xyla, who had been sweeping the other side of the road, noticed what was going on and hurried over, saying, “Calm down, Mr. Shaw! Don’t do anything rash! Let her go!”  Xyla recognized Zeke as the man who had accompanied Jenny Hall when she came to the Sanitation Office to apologize. According to her colleagues, this man must be Serenity’s ex–boyfriend.  “You really should let go of her, Mr. Shaw, otherwise someone might take a picture of you with her now, and then you’ll have a lot of explaining to do to your girlfnend, Miss Hall.”  Zeke’s expressions went through several changes before he finally let go of Serenity and left.  “What did that guy want from you?” Xyla asked Serenity with concer  “Who knows?” she replied. “He probably had nothing better to do!  She was perfectly certain that whatever reason he had for coming to her and asking her who she was dating, it was definitely not because he still had any feelings for her. Still, what had happened was undeniably odd. Only God knew what Zeke Shaw was trying to do!  “By the way,” Xyla said, “I think you’d better talk to the director during lunch break, Serenity. I heard that Quinn has been collecting signatures in a petition to pressure the director to fire you.”  Serenity’s eyebrows knitted. It seemed that Quinn was sparing no effort in getting rid of her. Still…  She said, “If the director decides to fire me, there’d be no point in talking to him. If it comes to that, I’ll just look for another  job.”  Even though she had said that, she still felt a little helpless since she had only managed to get this job after tirelessly applying for countless jobs everywhere. Finding another job would unquestionably be a nigh impossible task.  Xyla sighed. She knew, of course, that workers in their position did not even sign a contract before taking up the job. Compared to those in proper positions like Quinn, they were, simply put, expendable. She did not even have to guess whose side the director would take between Quinn and Serenity.  Once they had both completed their work, they returned to the Sanitation Office together, where they bumped into Quinn.  “I think you’d better get ready to leave now,” Quinn told Serenity with a smug look on her face. “No one here has any desire to work with a criminal, you know.”  Serenity kept her composure, showing no sign of fear at all, which had been what Quinn hoped to see.  This vexed Quinn.  “Let’s see how much longer you can keep up that act!” she dared Serenity. “Soon, the director is going to call you into his office, then we’ll see what happens!”  She then snorted haughtily. She had worked so hard trying to get the signatures of most people in their workplace. Judging from the director’s reaction when she handed the petition over to him, she was pretty sure that Serenity would be fired soon.  Yet moments later, an employee from the Human Resources Department came to her and told her, “The director would like to  see you in his office, quinn.”  “Me?” Quinn asked, surprised. Could it be that the director had some questions about the petition so he wanted to talk to her before firing Serenity?  And so, Quinn beaded over to the director’s office.  “Serenity,” Nyla said, her face wrought with concern, “make sure you let the director know how desperate your situation has been when you see him later, okay? Perhaps he might sympathize with your plight and change his mind about firing you.”  “We’ll see how it goes,” Serenity responded.  At that moment, her colleagues all looked at her with different looks on their faces. Some looked at her with sympathy, some with disgust, and more…  But no one could have guessed that Quinn would come out of the director’s office looking devastated. There was not a trace of smug confidence left on her face.  Some of their colleagues surrounded her and asked her, “What did the director have to say to you, Quinn?”  By that point, Quinn was on the verge of tears. She could hardly believe what was happening. How could she be the one getting fired?? It clearly should have been Serenity!  However, what the director told her in the office still rang vividly in her ears… 

Chapter 58  The red light soon turned green.  Zeke was about to drive away, but his whole body suddenly froze when he realized that the man beside Serenity looked very familiar… The image of the only man in the whole of Solaria that he must never offend popped up in his mind.  That man looked just like Jackson Valor!  But how could it be him? How could Jackson Valor be with Serenity?! The idea itself was ridiculous!  The car behind Zeke honked, urging him to move already, but at that moment, the man beside Serenity suddenly turned around and looked up in Zeke’s direction. As soon as Zeke could see the man’s face, he felt as if the blood in his body had frozen inte ice.  Jack Jackson Valor?!  Was it really Jackson Valor?! Sure, the man’s clothes and hairstyle were different from what he remembered, but that face was simply identical to the man himself!  Zeke drove away while his body was still stiff in shock, and he could not help but doubt if what he had just seen was real.  Meanwhile, at the intersection, Serenity rubbed her eyes again and again until, at last, her eyes were clear of any sand. It looked like Jack really did get rid of it when he blew on her face. She turned to the man beside her and noticed that his gaze was focused on the other side of the road,  She asked, “What are you looking at, Jack?”  “Nothing,” he replied in a flat tone. “I just.. I think I saw someone I know.”  “Is it your friend?”  “No,” he answered, his eyes gleaming. “I’ve never considered that man to be my friend.”  Zeke simply could not go to sleep that whole night. His mind was preoccupied with the scene he had seen at the intersection earlier that day. He suspected that he might have been mistaken and that the man beside Serenity might just have been someone who looked a lot like Jackson Valor. After all, how could a powerful man like him spend any of his precious time with a woman like Serenity?  She was the woman who had killed his former fiancee, after all.  No one would ever believe that Jackson Valor had been with Serenity Lewis even if he told them.  Still, he could not suppress the uneasiness he felt at that moment.  What if it really was him? If that man really was Jackson Valor, then… he dared not imagine what would come next.  The next day, Zeke went straight to the street where Serenity was cleaning to find her.  He tactfully asked her, “Are you dating anyone right now?”  The question confounded Serenity. Never in a million years would she expect Zeke Shaw to suddenly show up first thing in the morning just to ask her such a question.  She replied, “That’s none of your business, Mr. Shaw. I’m trying to work right now, so please get out of my way.”  After that, she went back to cleaning the streets, acting as if Zeke was not even there.  Zeke’s expression turned dark, and he grabbed Serenity’s arm as he demanded, “Answer me, Serenity! I’m not here to joke with you! Who is that man that you were with yesterday?” 

Chapter 57  Serenity raised her head ever so slightly to glance rideways. She then breathed a sigh of relief and looked up at Jackson, asking. “Have you paid the hill?  “Yeah.”  “Let’s go, then,” she said, grabbing her handbag. Then, as if trying to escape something, she hurried out of the restaurant.  “What’s going on?” Jackson asked. “Are you hiding from someone?  She paused her steps. A peculiar look flushed across her face, and she said, “My former colleagues were in that restaurant,  I didn’t want them to see me  As she spoke, she chackled, almost as if marlding herself, and she added, “Isn’t it ridiculous? They all know what has happened to me, and they must’ve guessed how far I’ve fallen now, yet I still can’t face them and want to hide from them.”  She did not want to see the pity in their eyes. She did not want to see them feeling sorry for her.  and  Back then, she had fought tooth and nail to build herself a successful career as a lawyer, yet now, while all her colleagues were still in the profession, that path was closed off to her forever.  The derision she felt for herself at that mament suddenly made him feel deeply sorry for her.  “Then just avold them this time,” he said softly, holding her hand tight. “One day, you’ll shine even brighter than them, Sis.”  any  of  Shine.. she smiled butterly. At present, she no longer dared to dream of a bright future because she had to fight with all her might just to survive from day to day.  “I heard Jenny say you tried to get that woman. Serenity Lewis, a job the other day. I’m warning you, don’t ever get Involved with that woman again! She was the one who killed Jenny’s sister, Jackson Valor’s fiancee! Our family simply can’t afford to offend Jackson Valor!”  Zeke’s father’s stern voice rang in his ear through the phone. Zeke frowned slightly and simply replied, “I know, Dad.”  “Don’t ever offend Jackson Valor,” was a sentence that he had heard too many times before. Back then, everyone had blamed him for choosing a woman like Serenity to be his girlfriend. Fortunately, after breaking up with her, he had started dating Jenny Hall, whom his family very much approved of The Shaw family and the Hall family were equals, so they were a good match. They had almost gotten married then, and the two families had nearly become in–laws. Although the marriage had not come to pass, the two families still got along weİİ  The Shaw family hoped that if things turned really bad for them, the Hall family might be able to save them by persuading Jackson Valor to go easy on them.  After the call ended, Zeke stared ahead at the red light in front of him and slowly stepped on the brakes. The image of Serenity crossed his mind, and he could not deny that she was no longer the same woman she used to be all those years ago. Although she might still look exactly the same, the aura she now exuded was completely different. Not to mention that the sanitation worker uniform she had been wearing convinced him that he made the absolutely correct choice in breaking up with her back then.  He now knew that Jenny was his suitable match. As for Serenity, she now belonged in the past, a past that might forever be a stain on him should anyone mention it to him in the future. He felt slightly guilty when he saw how she had ended up now, of course. After all, when she had asked him to collect the evidence for her back then, he not only refused her but even broke up with her right then and there.  Still, it was ultimately her own fault that she had killed Mira Hall! That one tragle mistake meant that she had not only offended the Hall family but the powerful Valor family as well. How could be ever help her then?!  As these thoughts went through his mind, a slender figure at the intersection that he saw through the windshield caught his  eye.  Chapter 57  1/2  That was. Serenity!  Zeke was taken alsack, but what shocked him more was the discovery that there was a man by  man’s side. They were  saying something to each other, and then Serenity slowly raised her head toward the man while the man leaned gently down toward her, their faces inching toward each oflier.  It clearly looked like they were going in for a kiss!  Anger bubbled up inside him. He did not expect Serenity to find a new man so soon after being released from prison. He really should not have wasted his time trying to help her! 

Chapter 56  Chapter 56  In the past, Serenity would always come here for a meal with her colleagues at the law firm after work. Back then, eating here was nothing more than a normal routine after an ordinary workday, yet now, having a meal here felt like a rare treat and an extravagant one at that.  “It looks pretty good!” said Jackson, trying to distract Serenity by changing the subject. “I’ll let you order, then ”  Serenity then ordered some dishes for bath of them. She only chose the cheaper dishes, and the most expensive one, a shrimp dish, cost about a dollars. All the dishes added up to about 25 dollars, which was not that much at all, but it was still the most expensive meal Serenity had had in a long time.  Jackson urged her to order more food, saying, “Don’t worry, Sis, I can afford it.”  However, Serenity merely replied, “This is more than enough for both of us to have a nice meal. There’s no need to order more food.”  Not long afterward, the waiter brought all the dishes to the table, and they both began to enjoy their meal. The food there was much better than all the simple dishes they had been eating together all this while. As they tucked into the shrimp dish, Jackson very thoughtfully peeled the shell off the shrimps before placing them onto Serenity’s plate  Stunned, she stared silently at those shrimps  “Why aren’t you eating?” he asked.  Serenity smiled gently and replied, “I just realized that you’re a really sweet guy, Jack Anyone lucky enough to date you would be a very happy woman!  Having said that, she stuffed a shrimp into her mouth. She remembered a scene in a television series she used to watch where the male protagonist had peeled the shrimps for the female protagonist, and how it used to fill her with a warm feeling inside.  The gesture might seem small and insignificant, yet it could make someone feel treasured and cherished.  Back when she was dating Zeke Shaw, not once had he ever peeled any shrimps for her. In fact, she could now clearly see that wwen while they were dating, although Zeke had repeatedly told her he loved her, his actions proved that he never cared much  for her at all  It should have been no surprise then that when she had gotten into trouble, he had immediately distanced himself from her! “Is that so?” Jackson responded in a soft voice. Dating, huh? To him, it sounded like such an immature thing to do. He figured he would probably never do such a thing with any woman in his life.  As for marriage, he thought he might consider it, but only as a means to advance his career.  Once they had both finished their meal, Jackson got up from his seat to pay the bill. Serenity was about to get up ton when she suddenly recognized a few familiar faces cutside through the glass wall, and they were heading inside the restaurant.  She turned her back almost instinctively, not wishing for them to see her. Alas, it seemed that the more she wished against something, the more likely it was to happen.  Those familiar faces were now inside the restaurant, and the waiter was leading them toward a table near her. They were now  heading her way,  Serenity’s heart pounded in her chest.  She could hear Jackson’s voice asking “What’s wrong, Sis?”  Without thinking, she wrapped her arms around Jackson’s waist and huned her face in his chest  Jackson was stunned but said putting, and he just let her bug him like that  After a while, he finally asked, “sis?

Chapter 55  So, not only are you trying to seduce Peter, but you’ve also been hooking up with another man,  Quinn’s shrill accusing voice suddenly rang through the air.  Serenity was annoyed, but she knew that this world would never be rid of pesky people like Quinn.  Jackson tumed around, and his cold gaze fell on this plain–looding woman with a sharp tongue.  As soon as Quinn got a good look at Jackson, astonishment flashed through her eyes. This man was even more handsome th all the actors she had seen on television! Although his thick bangs covered parts of his face, it only made her feel that if this man were to tidy up his hairstyle and change into better clothes, he could easily give all those male superstars a run for their money!  Quinn was instantly struck by jealousy. How could a woman like Serenity not only steal Peter’s heart but also attract such a handsome man?  Her lips curled up into a sinister smile, and she said, “Are you Serenity’s friend? You’re probably unaware that she’s been in prison before. A few years ago, she was drunk driving when she crashed into another car and killed someone. Imagine, she drove her car even though she was drunk! That’s like committing a murder on purpose!”  To Quinn’s utter disappointment, there was no shock, astonishment, or even concern on the man’s face at all after hearing what she had to say, Instead, he looked as calm as ever. The only detectable change was his gaze, which had become even colder now.  “Looks like you’re the one who spread the news to everyone else,” said Jackson, his penetrating gaze fixed on Quinn.  Quinn was now inexplicably filled with terror. It felt as if horrible things would happen to her if she admitted to the deed. Still, she bit her lips and defiantly responded, “So what if I did? I was only doing the right thing! Everyone has the right to know that there’s a criminal among their colleagues! If she’s so afraid of people finding out, she shouldn’t have committed the crime back then!  Jackson suddenly chuckled and said, “So you admitted it. Good.”  After speaking, he completely ignored Quinn and turned to Serenity, saying, “Let’s go, Sis. I’m tired of this woman now.”  “Okay,” Serenity replied.  Quinn glared at them as they walked away. Sis?! Could that man really be Serenity’s brother? They did not even look alike! Besides, that man seemed to be about the same age as Serenity!  Yet, for whatever reason, she got goosebumps when she thought of the man’s soft chuckle earlier.  Serenity dragged Jackson away from the Sanitation Office, but she did not lead him back to her place. Instead, she headed in  another direction  “I got paid today,” she told him, “so let’s go out and have dinner outside! Come to think of it, I don’t think we’ve ever proper dinner outside before ever since we met!”  “Let’s have a nice dinner, then,” said Jackson. “Hut let me pay this time since I’ve earned some money too. You’ve been taking good care of me all this while, so it’s my turn to repay you, Sis.”  Serenity felt strangely proud, almost as if her own little brother had finally grown i  “Go ahead, then!” she said, smiling. The bad mood she had been in because of Quinn nove quickly dissipated  The two of them soon came to a shopping mall downtown where Serenity decided on a popular restaurant to have dinner at  “The food here isn’t bad at all, and their price is reasonable tou. Back then, my colleagues and I would always..”  Serenity paused abruptly mid–sentence. 

Chapter 54  1/2 He had just gotten off work at the time when he had seen Serenity kneeling on the side of the road, trying her best to comfort acrying little girl. She had sung to the girl, danced, and made all kinds of silly and funny moves in an attempt to cheer the girl up without caring about how the people around her might think, and in the end, she had succeeded in making; the girl stop crying  After that, she had bought the girl abun and stood there while reporting to the police, never leaving the girl’s side until her parents came to take her safely home. Eventually, the police had returned with the girls family. The parents had tried to give her a hundred dollars for helping keep their daughter safe, even stuffing the money into her hands, but all she had done was smile and shake her head firmly, refusing to accept even a single cent. Once the girl had finally left with her parents, Serenity stood quietly in the same spot, staring at the young family walk away with a peaceful smile on her face, At that moment, Peter was suddenly hit by a realization that what he really wanted was a calm and level–headed woman Serenity. He had no idea if this counted as love at first sight, but he knew that it was the first time in his life for him to fall love with a woman in such a fashion. “Even if you don’t mind it,” Serenity continued, “what about your parents? Would they let you marry a woman who’s been in prison before?” Peter froze. The color drained from his face, and he became slightly pale. “Marriage isn’t about two people,” said Serenity. “It’s about two families. You don’t even know what my family is like. Besides, 1 don’t have any feelings for you, so please just stop wasting your time with me.” After speaking, Serenity headed to a sink and washed her hands. Peter stond aside in a daze, almost as if her words were a huge blow to him. Just when Serenity was done washing her hands. and was about to leave, he suddenly uttered, “But what if I manage to persuade my parents to accept you.” She paused and then turned toward him as she said, “That doesn’t change anything. If I really liked you, I’d stay by your side even if your parents don’t approve of me. I’d be by your side till the day your parents finally gave in. But the truth is, I only regard you as a colleague, nothing more. I don’t have any feelings for you at all.” She could not have spoken in a harsher or more blant way than that. Peter’s face became even more sickly and pale now. Just as she was about to head home, Serenity noticed that there was a familiar figure when she walked out of the Sanitation Office entrance, and this person seemed to be eagerly waiting for her. “Jack!“” she shouted, running up toward him. “What are you doing here?” “I got off work early today,” he explained before talking her hand as if it was the most natural thing to do, “so I came here to pick you up.” At that moment, Peter walked out of the entrance and bumped into them. He nodded his head at then awkwardly before heading straight toward the parking lot Jackson casually asked, “Have you rejected hirm, Sis?” “I did,” she replied, although she felt that she might have hurt Peter’s feelings with her words. Still, it was kitler to let him down now instead of dragging the whole thing out indelinitely, “Actually, I think he shouldn’t have wasted his time on me at all. He can find a much better woman than me.  Serenity knew that she was no great beauty, and besides, she had a lowly job and even had a criminal record, so she just could not figure out why Peter would be so persistent in pursuing her. “You’ve got it all wrung,” Jackson corniscted her. “It’s you whi rves a much better. thon that guy. He’s not worthy of you,” Serenity smiled but did not take those words to heart.

Chapter 53  In fact, at first, it was almost impossible for her to find any job that would enable her lo stand on her own two feet at all. “But you still shouldn’t waste your time staying in this kind of job,” said Xyla. “If you go on like this, you’ll never find a nice man to marry!” For a woman like Xyla, what concerned her the most was marriage and how to find a suitable match. “It looks like Peter doesn’t mind your past,” she continued, “so are you really not going to consider him? You can’t find many honest and decent men like him these days, you know.” “No,” replied Serenity. “I can’t possibly be in a relationship with Peter.” Xyla paused for a moment before exclaiming, “Serenity! You aren’t rejecting him because he’s just a driver, are you? Granted, he’s not a rich man, especially when compared to your ex–boyfriend, but…” “Xyla!” Serenity interrupted her. “That’s not what I thought at all! I just.. I’ve been through so much, and I really have no desire to fall in love with anyone ever again” “Sally girl!” Xyla sighed “Haven’t you considered that if you stay single for the rest of your life, you’d regret it later? You may be fine now, but when you grow old, you’ll be miserable because you’d have no children by your side. You have no idea how unbearable it will be when you’re all alone!” Children… Serenity smiled wryly. The thought of having her own family sounded like an outlandish fantasy now. After a whole day of working, Serenity and Xyla started to pack up all their cleaning tools and headed back to the Sanitation Office. When they were returning the tools, Serenity did not see Quinn Fender, the woman who had been terrorizing her every chance she got, anywhere in the office, but just as she was about to go wash her hands, she noticed Quinn standing next to Peter near the sink  “Don’t you know that Serenity used to be in prison?!” she heard Quinn assert angrily. “Why the hell would you want to wait for a woman like that? Am I even worse than a jailbird in your eyes?!” “Will you shut up about her having been in prison already?!” Peter countered with displeasure. “It was an accident! She didn’t mean to harm anyone!” “She was drunk driving!” Quinn argued. “That means she meant to harm people! She’s clearly just a slt who’s trying to seduce you!” “Then I’ll gladly be seduced!” Peter snapped back.  Hearing that these two were talking about her, she instinctively tried to avoid them, but before she could leave, Quinn suddenly noticed her and yelled, “Serenity, you shameless b*tch! You were eavesdropping, weren’t you?” Serenity sighed and stopped in her tracks. Meanwhile, Peter appeared awkward and embarrassed when he saw Serenity there. “This Sanitation Office is a public place,” Serenity calmly said, “and I only came here to wash my hands, not to listen in on anyone’s private conversation. If you’re so worried about people overhearing you, you should’ve found yourselves a room and closed the door before you started talking.” “You…” Quinn gave Serenity a death stare. Before she walked away, she threatened, “Just wait and see what’s coming for you!” Serenity’s face was mildly flushed red. She had heard the exact same threat more than a few times before in prison. Peter looked at Serenity with slight embarrassment before telling her, “Don’t take whatever she said just now to heart.” “I won’t,” she replied.
