Chapter 70  1/2  “Do you think she’ll want to stay with me?” Jackson asked.  Connor was slightly surprised. “Do you want Ms. Lewis to stay with you?”  “Isn’t the game over once Mr. Valor tells Ms. Lewis who he really is?” Connor thought. He wondered if Mr. Valor. Perhaps he had special feelings for Ms. Lewis?  Connor’s eyes grew wide at the thought. “Mr. Valor, are you…” Connor gaped and paused his question abruptly.  “What do you want to say? Say it!“Jackson ordered.  “Mr. Valor, are you in love with Ms. Lewis?” Connor asked honestly.  Connor thought that was why Mr. Valor had been so passionate about this game. Maybe that was why he had secretly done so many things for her. That would explain why he wanted her to stay with him even after the game was over.  Jackson’s expression gradually froze.  In love with Serenity? How could that be? How could he fall in love with a woman?  His father was already a good example. One should never fall in love with anyone. He should protect his dignity and not let anyone trample over it.  At best, he simply enjoyed Serenity’s company. Her warmth and presence made him feel comfortable and at ease.  “Never say that again,” Jackson warned coldly.  Connor was shocked. He then responded, “Yes, sir.”  The dazzling light and vibe in the bar were simply mesmerizing  Jackson was lazily sitting on the couch, and Caleb looked at him curiously. Their circle of friends always had gatherings like this, but Jackson had never liked to participate. However, this particular night was an exception.  Caleb leaned over and probed, “What made you think of coming?  Caleb and Jackson were childhood playmates. Having been a classmate in junior high and high school, Caleb naturally knew Jackson had always preferred quiet places to bustling places like this.  “I felt like it, so I came over. Do I need any particular reason? Don’t you guys often call me out?” Jackson replied.  Although he said that, Caleb still found it strange.  Just then, a woman dressed in beautiful clothes and elaborate makeup approached Jackson and started talking to him.  Caleb had thought that his friend would refuse. Who knew that Jackson would let the woman sit beside him?  Caleb’s eyes were popping out of his head. He thought Jackson was not interested in women. Why was he willing to let a woman get close? Had he changed?!  Caleb backed off in good grace and walked to the side as he looked at another man sitting on the couch. The man was playing with a silver bracelet in his hand.  “Hey, is Jackson finally interested in women now?”  The man with the silver bracelet raised his eyes and swept his gaze over Caleb indifferently as he said, “Why don’t you ask him about it?”  Caleb rubbed his nose, Clearly, he did not dare to ask.  “By the way, you’re a fully grown adult yet you still wear a silver bracelet all day. Aren’t you afraid of being laughed at?” Caleb tried to reach for the silver bracelet in the man’s hand as he spoke.  Chapter 70  Lucas Gomez moved his wrist away from Caleb’s hand and warned the latter with a darkened gaze, “No touching  Caleb Inoked at the man in front of him. If he were to describe it, Jackson was aloof and charming with a lazy aura. Meanwhile, Lucas was a stoic man, always so indifferent and cold.  Lucas had tanned skin, a tall nose, and long eyelashes shielding his eyes. Most would find him charming yet strangely distant. It was as if no one could ever enter his heart.  Jackson had only had a woman before, and that was his late fiancee, Mira. However, Lucas was different. He constantly changed his girlfriends one after another, but no one ever really captured his heart. 

Chapter 69  Joy disliked Serenity. Joy had been very displeased after Serenity’s accident. She would often hear people talking about the end of the Shaw family, and this made her feel ashamed. It had gone on until her brother had started dating Jenny. Finally, no one said that anymore.  “Serenity is someone who brings bad luck to us. Fortunately, you broke up with her in time. She isn’t worthy of you at all. I heard she’s cleaning the streets now. She’s such a disgrace. Why did the judge sentence her to only three years in prison? I think she should stay in jail for a decade or two!”  Joy spoke of Serenity with disgust. The more she spoke, the more frightened Zeke became.  After all, he knew Serenity was with Jackson! Jackson had not explicitly explained his relationship with her, but Zeke could somewhat guess as a man himself.  “Enough, Joy. Don’t talk about her anymore. When you see Serenity, you’d better be more polite,” Zeke warned.  Joy complained with displeasure, “Zeke, what’s wrong with you?! You didn’t say anything when I spoke of her before! Why are you defending her now?”  “Zeke, you’re not still in love with her, are you?” Marcia asked, feeling, worried.  Hearing that, David frowned. “Don’t even think about it. Serenity isn’t welcome here!”  Zeke felt troubled. The truth was not the same as they thought. Unfortunately, he could not explain it clearly.  Zeke gritted his teeth and warned, “I don’t have any feelings for her, but she’s not someone we can offend! All I can say is don’t offend the wrong person!”  “Don’t offend the wrong person?” Joy scoffed. “Zeke, what nonsense are you saying? Serenity is just a sanitation worker. Why can’t we offend her?”  “Anyway, just listen to me. Don’t ruin the family!” Zeke warned sharply.  David was experienced and had gone through a great deal more than his children. When he saw his son’s overreaction, he sensed something strange. “Zeke, is Serenity..  “Dad, there are some things I can’t say. Either way, you’d better show some respect to her, or… At least respect her for now,” Zeke advised. After all, Jackson seemed to be taking Serenity very seriously, at least for the time being.  David fell into deep thought, and Marcia was silent too. Only Joy brushed it off with disdain. She did not believe her brother’s warning at all, and she did not want to respect Serenity either. Zeke was obviously still in love with Serenity and giving them  excuses!  Joy thought, ‘Serenity has been in prison before. How can she be so to get engaged, so how can she still seduce him? She’s too shameless!  edy after leaving prison?! Serenity knows Zeke is about  Jackson’s eyes were fixed on the box of stomach medicine on his desk. Serenity had bought this for him when he had had a stomach ache. His stomach pain had improved eventually, but he still had half a box of medicine left. He had not thrown it away and kept it on his desk instead.  An elegant and slightly hypnotic voice resounded in the CEO’s office. “Connor, what do you think? What would happen if Serenity knew who I really am?”  Connor was picking up a document that his boss had approved and was about to leave, but Jackson’s sudden question startled him. “Uhh.”  “What’s wrong? Is that a difficult question?” Jackson raised his brow.  It was not a particularly difficult question. However, Connor was unsure if his boss would accept the answer.  “Ms. Lewis might feel deceived,” Connor answered tactfully. In truth, she would most definitely feel deceived, not maybe. 

Chapter 68  “Jack” Serenity called out to him. She was louder this time and pressed her hands firmly to his face.  A trace of clarity gradually came to his eyes, and his dark pupils regained focus, reflecting her face. However, the look in his eyes seemed inexplicably complicated.  “What’s wrong?” Serenity asked.  “It’s nothing.” Jackson let out a long breath.  “I’m glad you’re fine.” Serenity sighed in relief. “That look you just gave was like…” She thought about it and came up with at description. “You were like fragile glass, and it scared me.”  “Fragile glass?‘ Jackson chuckled softly. A deep coldness and hostility flashed in his eyes and disappeared instantly. Then, he was back to normal. “Sis, no one in this world can break me.”  At that instance, Serenity felt like Jackson was a different person, and she thought she must have seen it wrongly.  “Sis, you’re never going to leave me behind, are you?” he asked, staring at her.  Serenity smiled. “Didn’t we talk about this before? I won’t leave you as long as you stay.”  “Yeah, we did. I forgot,” Jackson murmured.  Jackson opened his arms and grabbed her, embracing her and feeling her presence in his arms.  Serenity had promised not to leave him behind, yet why did he feel so uneasy? Was he scared? Would she leave him after knowing his true identity? Jack could stay by her side, but what about Jackson Valor? Could he?  David Shaw was questioning his son, Zeke, in the living room of the Shaw Residence. “Zeke, Jenny said Jackson sent his secretary to pick you up. Why did he suddenly ask for a private meeting with you?”  David was a little fearful of Jackson. After all, the Shaw family was unlike the Valor family. The Shaw family’s business was now declining. In David’s view, Zeke’s marriage with Jenny was the only way to turn their family business around.  David was afraid of Jackson’s prejudice against them as it might hinder the Shaw family’s marriage with the Hall family.  “It’s nothing,” Zeke said  “You didn’t tell Jenny anything either. Are you going to say nothing to us as well? If there was nothing, why would Jackson send his secretary to pick you up?” David said with displeasure.  Zeke’s mother, Marcia, urged, “Yeah, Zeke. It’s better to be honest with us if there’s something wrong”  Zeke took a deep breath. “It’s really nothing.”  Zeke could not tell them anything. If he did, Jackson would be furious! Zeke still had chills when he thought of his previous meeting with Jackson!  “Does Jackson still have an issue with us? Is he going to act against us?” David simply guessed on his own.  Zeke had to make up an excuse. “It has nothing to do with us. Jackson met me that day and talked about the engagement party.  Hearing that, David and Marcia breathed a sigh of relief and looked better.  Meanwhile, Zele’s younger sister, Joy, was indignant at the conversation. She complained, “Isn’t it all because of Serenity? If it weren’t for her, why would we have so many worries?” 

Chapter 67  Serenity let out a sigh of relief. “Great, you’re finally awake.”  Jackson sat up. Earlier, he had dreamed of his childhood, kneeling in front of that woman and begging. Why had he had such a dream? Was it because they had talked about that woman earlier?  “I just had a bad dream…” Jackson exhaled a long breath. When he looked down, he found that his pajamas had been unbuttoned, revealing his bare chest. “Why are my clothes…”  Seeing that, Serenity pursed her lips in embarrassment and explained, “Well… You were screaming about the pain, and I was afraid that something was wrong… Uhh… So, I unbuttoned your pajamas and wanted to have a look”  Jackson stared at Serenity in silence, and her face slowly grew hot.  “I swear I didn’t… You woke up before I saw anything. I didn’t see anything.” Serenity was busy explaining, but the more she spoke, the weirder it sounded.  “Even if you did see anything, it’s okay,” Jackson reassured her.  Serenity’s face flushed red. His response made her almost choke on her own saliva. ‘My goodness! Doesn’t he know how someone else can easily misunderstand his words?!”  After a short silence, she stammered, “Does it… Does it still hurt?”  “I’m fine.” Jackson looked down and buttoned up his pajamas.  Serenity struggled to keep her gaze above his neck. However, she suddenly yanked his pajamas open after an accidental glimpse of his chest.  “How did you get this…” Serenity stared at his chest at a loss. There was a scar on his chest near his heart. Although the scar had faded, it looked terrible. She was sure it was definitely not a minor injury.  “It’s just an old small injury,” he said indifferently.  Serenity bit her lower lip slightly. She raised her hand and gently touched his scar. In his sleep earlier, he had kept crying out in pain while scratching at this spot. Was it because of this injury?  After so many years, he still felt the pain in his dream. How could it be just a minor injury?  Was he in great pain when he had gotten this injury? Serenity felt a terrible heartache for the pain he had gone through.  She murmured, “How did you get hurt like that? When did you get hurt?”  Jackson stiffened slightly. How many years had it been? No one had ever touched his scar except the doctor. She was the only one… The only one who had ever touched his scar.  Jackson seemed to feel a rush of blood to his heart, and his heart felt as if it was beating faster than usual.  “A long time ago. It doesn’t hurt anymore,” he said.  Serenity felt slightly relaxed. Only then did she realize that it looked like she was going to do something indecent to him  “G–great! Quickly button up. You’ll catch a cold.” She blushed and moved her hand away quickly.  The warmth of her fingertips suddenly disappeared, making him feel empty.  Jackson buttoned up his pajamas slowly. “By the way, while I was sleeping, did I say anything other than crying out in pain?”  After a short hesitation, she answered frankly, “You just… You loept yelling ‘Mom, don’t po“…”  Jackson froze. He unconsciously clenched his hands into fists and dug his nails into his palmus until it hurt.  Seeing his reaction, Serenity could not help but reach out and touch his cheek. She could feel a slightly cold feeling on her fingertips.  Chapter 67  2/2  “Jack,” she whispered his name.  Jackson slowly looked up and fluttered his eyelashes slightly. He lifted up his eyes and stared fixedly at her through his bangs.  He had the same look in his eyes as before when he talked about his parents. It seemed empty. For some reason, this made her heart hurt a little. 

Chapter 66  Serenity was startled. She did not expect the place where she had met him to be the place where his father had died.  “I’m sorry,” she said.  “My father’s death was his own doing.” Jackson said in a low voice. “No need to apologize, Sis.”  “His own doing?” Serenity was surprised. She never thought he would describe his father’s death in this way.  “Isn’t it? He fell in love with someone he shouldn’t have. Soon, the person he loved found out he had no more value. He knelt on his knees and desperately begged for her to stay. Even so, it was useless, Finally, he froze to death in the snow.”  The expression he had seemed indifferent. It was as if he was just talking about a perfectly ordinary thing, and even his voice remained calm.  However, there seemed to be a feeling of loneliness around him.  Serenity felt like Jackson was back to how he had been when she had first met him.  “Jack” Serenity called out to him.  When Jackson looked up, her face was reflected in his dark eyes. “Hey, do you think he had his death coming?”  Serenity felt a dryness in her throat. After a moment of hesitation, she stuttered out a question. “Was she… Is that woman your mother?–  Although he was silent with no expression, a touch of pain flashed through his eyes.  Serenity knew the answer in that instant, and she did not know how to comfort him. Any words she said would be meaningless at this moment. Only those who had experienced the past understood this pain.  She stood up and hugged him as he sat in the chair.  As he rested his head against her body, he inhaled her scent in his nose and felt her warmth on his cheeks. Through her clothes, her steady heartbeat resonated in his ears.  It made him want to keep listening to her heartbeat like this…  “Mom… Don’t go…”  The tiny figure knelt right on his knees. The woman had already packed her bag and was leaving. However, he wanted to beg  the woman to stay.  Even so, it was useless. The woman was determined and left without looking at him.  When he saw she was about to leave, the boy panicked. He grew desperate and tried to reach out and grab his mother.  The next moment, the young boy was swung away. Then, a piercing pain exploded in his chest.  ‘It hurts! It hurts!!  It was so painful. Could anyone save him from his pain? Could someone stop his pain? He felt like he was dying from the suffocating pain…  “Jack! Jack!”  ‘Someone is calling! Who is it? Who is calling?  “Jack, it’s fine now. There’s no more pain. I’m here. I’m right here, Jack. It’s fine now…” A gentle voice called out to him anxiously, worried  As her voice reached him, his suffocation and pain faded like a tidal wave. He struggled to open his eyes, and a beautiful and quiet woman soon came into his sight.  Chapter 66  Jackson muttered with difficulty, “Sis…”
