Chapter 80  When she said “Jackson Valor“, his body stiffened, almost imperceptibly.  “Do you hate Jackson Valor?” he asked softly.  1/1  She sighed a little. “Maybe. Everyone in Salaria knows who he is. The person who died in the car accident was Jackson Valor’s fiancée, Mira Hall, so naturally, I wouldn’t get off easy. The more people wanted to please him, the more I suffered.”  –  After a pause, she said almost self–deprecatingly, “Sometimes, I do wonder if the person who died in the car accident wasn’t Mira Hall, would I have won the case? Maybe I wouldn’t have to go to prison for three years and go through all that.”  She was not resentful or angry, but her self–deprecation made him feel even tnore guilty.  He was probably responsible for half the pain she suffered.  He crouched down in front of her. Through his heavy bangs, his eyes stared at her fixedly. “If I had known that you would suffer so much. I would have protected you three years ago.”  He was not saying that because of the game. It came straight from his heart.  If, back then, he did not let others do those things to her to please him or if he was willing to give her a fair trial, then… she would not have spent three years in prison and gotten all those injuries.  “I know you would have done that for me. Alright, let’s not talk about that anymore,” Serenity smiled, lifted her hand and rubbed his black hair.  She seemed to be doing that more and more often recently.  Lisa returned after getting the medicine. She told them, “I’ll go get the car from the underground parking lot, Jack, help Serenity to the main entrance and wait for me there.”  “Okay,” answered Jackson.  Lisa left to get the car. Serenity got ready to stand up with Jack’s help, but he lowered his body with his back to her instead.  What are you doing?” asked Serenity.  “I’ll carry you,” he said, “Your foot will still hurt even if you hold onto me when you walk. I’d rather carry you.”  “But…”  “Do you hate getting carried by me?” he asked.  “No,” she denied sharply.  “Then climb on. How long are you going to make me squat for?”  Serenity bit her lip. In the end, she climbed onto Jackson’s back and wrapped her arms around his neck.  She did not notice the slight change in his expression when her hands coiled around his neck. It was akin to leaving his life in  her hands. She could easily choke his throat and threaten his life in this posture.  Under normal circumstances, he would never have allowed anyone to put their hands there.  But if it’s her, then…  There was a touch of tenderness in his eyes that he himself did not seem to notice.  He carried her out of the emergency room towards the hospital’s main entrance,  “Am 1.. heavy?” Serenity bit her lip and asked. She was worried that she might be too heavy of a burden for him. 

Chapter 79  He only paid more attention to Serenity than usual because of what the director said.  At that moment, someone else walked into the consulting room and went to Serenity’s side. He said, “Sis.”  “You’re here,” said Serenity. He arrived faster than she thought.  “Yeah, the heavy traffic delayed me a bit,” said Jackson  “Doctor, how is she? Is she okay? Someone tripped her and she fell several steps down the escalator,” Lisa asked nervously.  “The fall didn’t hurt her that much. She only had some minor bone fractures on her ankle. She’ll be fine after resting for a couple of weeks, but…” Dr. House hesitated a little.  “But what?” asked Lisa  “But Miss Lewis, did you get injured a lot in the last few years?” asked Dr. House.  The question surprised Serenity. She wasn’t sure how to answer that.  “I don’t mean to pry. It’s just that, your X–ray shows that you suffered a lot of injuries in the last few years. Some of your old injuries didn’t heal properly, so there might be some complications.”  “Complications?” Serenity frowned. “But I usually feel fine.”  “That’s because you’re still young. When you get older, those complications will slowly show themselves.”  “What kind of complications are we talking about?” Lisa looked more anxious than Serenity was  “In the future, she might get frequent joint pains. If it becomes serious, she might have difficulty lifting heavy objects or have difficulty walking.” answered Dr. House.  Serenity kept quiet and looked down at her limbs. She suffered all those old injuries in prison.  Even if her bones were fractured after a beating, she was merely bandaged up and left to heal by herself. She was grateful enough to get a moment of respite. There was no way she would get the proper treatment or be given enough time to heal properly.  “Then… can her injuries still be healed? Lisa asked nervously while trembling,  Serenity, however, seemed calm.  “It’s a long–term process. She has to eat more food that contains calcium. She should also avoid using cold water when she showers or does household chores. Miss Lewis, make sure you rest properly this time so that your injury doesn’t add to the complications,” said Dr. House.  He prescribed some medicine for her which Lisa went to get. Meanwhile, Jackson helped Lisa walk to a chair outside the  consulting room.  “Does it hurt?” asked Jackson.  “Actually, it doesn’t hurt that much,” said Serenity, “The injury isn’t that serious. Like the doctor said, I’ll heal in a week or  Two.”  He pursed his lips, “The old injuries the doctor mentioned… are they the injuries you suffered in prison?”  Serenity feigned a smile and said nonchalantly, “I took some beating in prison, but it’s no big deal. These old injuries will heal  ake care of them properly from now on.  The more nonchalant she looked, the more upset he became  “Sis, do you hate the people who put you in jail?” he suddenly asked.  She laughed. “Who am I supposed to hate? The judge? The Hall family who sued me? The Shaw family who refused to help me? Jackson Valor?  Chapter of 

Chapter 78  “Jack” answered Serenity. “I don’t know how lang 1 have to stay here for. I want to tell him not to wait for me for dinner.”  Serenity searched for Jack’s contact in the phone and called him.  The call was quickly picked up. Jackson’s slightly cold voice greeted her, “Sis.”  “I have to take care of something, so I’ll be home late today. You should take care of dinner yourself,” said Serenity.  “What do you mean “take care of something“? Just tell him that you’re in the hospital!” Lisa chimed in.  “Sis, you’re in the hospital?” There seemed to be a slight change in Jackson’s tone.  “Yeah, I tripped and fell, so I’m now in the hospital waiting to get an X–ray,” replied Serenity.  “Which hospital? I’ll be right there,” said Jackson,  “You don’t have to come. Lisa’s with me. Just wait for me at home,” she quickly said.  The other end of the call was silent. After a moment, Jackson’s cold voice could be heard again. He repeated the question insistently, which hospital?”  “Solaria General Hospital.” Serenity bit her lip slightly. Because she lost her mother when she was young and also spent three years in prison, she was always reluctant to impose on other people  If Lisa did not happen to be with her today, she would probably have come to the hospital by herself without telling anyone.  “I’ll be right there,” said Jackson.  After hanging up, Jackson called Connor Gunn. “Find out what happened to Serenity Lewis today.”  “Yes, Mr. Valor,” answered Connor.  “Also, find out who’s the best doctor in Solaria General Hospital’s orthopedic department and have him go to the hospital right now to take a look at her injuries,” ordered Jackson.  “Yes, Mr. Valor,” Connor answered once again.  After the call ended, Connor stared at his phone. Was his boss really not in love with Serenity Lewis?  For the sake of a woman, he would go through the trouble to investigate what happened to her and find the best orthopedist  for her.  He remembered there was an incident when their car drove past Serenity Lewis quite some time ago. She was cleaning the side of the road when an electric scooter ran into her. At that time, Mr. Valor merely spared her a glance and did not even react.  But now… he would go through all this trouble for the woman Connor thought there was no way Jackson Valor had no special feelings for Serenity Lewis..  And so, while Serenity was waiting to get an X–ray, a nurse suddenly walked over to her and took her directly to a VIP room to get an X–ray scan. She then took Serenity to a consulting room that had a different doctor in it than the one who inspected Serenity earlier.  “Shouldn’t i pa bark to the doctor from before?” asked Serenity. After all, it was the other doctor who examined her and told her to get an X–ray, so it only made sense for her to return to him after doing so.  “Dr. House happens to be available,” the nurse quickly said.  free at all. He was at home when the  Dr. House smiled and said gently, “Yes, I happen to be free right now.” No, he was ba hospital director called him and ordered blin to go in the hospital to inspect a certain patient.  The director even told him to be extra careful and not to make any mistakes.  He thought the patient must be a big shot of some sort, but the person before him looked rather ordinary. Her clothes did not look that expensive either.  However, as a doctor, it mattered not to him who the patient was. He would always do his best to help them. 

Chapter 77  1/1  “Why should I apologize?!” Joy protested indignantly.  In the meantime, a crowd had started to form around them. Some of the onlookers recognized Jenny. After all, Jenny was popular celebrity. Even though most of her face was covered by her sunglasses and hat, some people could still recognize her.  “It’s Jenny Hall! And 1 think the guy next to her is her fiancé!”  “What are they doing here?”  “What’s happening at the escalator? Is there an accident?”  Whispers rose among the crowd. Lisa helped Serenity walk down the escalator, Zeke saw this and went after them.  A hint of surprise flashed across Jenny’s eyes. She could not believe that Zeke would actually ditch her to go after Serenity! To make matters worse, the crowd around Jenny started to gossip after seeing that.  “Jenny’s fiancé is going after another woman.”  “Oh my god, is it a love triangle?”  Jenny felt humiliated. She shielded her face and left in a hurry with Joy, trying her best to avoid the phones that were filming her.  Meanwhile, Zeke caught up to Serenity. He said anxiously, “Serenity. Joy didn’t do it on purpose. I’ll pay for your medical expenses. I’ll pay as much as you want. Please don’t tell anyone about this…”  “Save it, Zeke Shaw!” Lisa yelled at him indignantly. “Do you honestly expect us to believe that your sister didn’t do it on purpose? You Shaws are crazy!”  She opened the car door and helped her best friend onto the passenger seat, then got onto the driver’s seat herself. Zeke slammed the car window repeatedly, trying to get their attention. His face was pale and his voice was trembling  Seeing this, even Lisa believed that Zeke was truly scared, but the question was, what was he scared of? That Serenity would sue Joy?  Even if she did, Joy would only have to pay a bit of compensation, and the Shaw family had money to burn.  After Lisa drove away with Serenity, Zeke stood motionless. All he could think of was… “it’s over“.  He did not know what the relationship between Jackson Valor and Serenity was, but from what he could tell, Serenity seemed to be special to Jackson Valor. And now, Serenity had gotten injured because of Joy. What would happen to Joy and the Shaw family?…  Zeke could only try to convince himself that Jackson Valor probably wouldn’t do anything to the Shaw family for someone like Serenity Lewis… right?  R–Right? He could not help recalling the way Jackson Valor called Serenity “Sis” There was a tenderness in his voice that Zeke had never heard from him before.  Lisa took Serenity to the hospital. They went straight to the emergency room and were now waiting to get an X–ray scan.  Serenity did not say anything, but Lisa could tell from her expression that she was in a lot of pain.  She did not know when it started, but her best friend would not even groan anymore even if she was in great pain,  Was it because of what she experienced in prison? Because she had been through greater pain than this, she would no longer groan for this amount of pain?  When Lisa recalled the bizarre car accident, she felt that there was more to it than met the rye, but she had no proof. Lisa saw Serenity taking out her phone, so she asked, “Who are you calling?”  1/2 

Chapter 76  After Serenity accepted the check, she left the store with Lisa  “Serenity, don’t you think that was a little strange? Lisa said as they exited the store. “Zeke actually handed you seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars without any hesitation, and Jenny was right there! Wasn’t he afraid that she would misunderstand?”  “It really is strange,” Serenity agreed.  “Do you think it’s because Zeke still has feelings for you?” Lisa wondered.  “No. He’s afraid. It’s as if he was afraid that I might get angry at Joy, and that would be detrimental to the Shaw Jarmily,” Serenity said, expressing her thoughts honestly.  Lisa found her statement somewhat absurd.  “Maybe he’s overthinking it.  “Who knows what goes on in his mind?” Serenity said with a shrug before looking at the check in her hand  “What are you going to do with this? Tear it up?” Lisa asked, knowing her friend well enough that she wouldn’t cash in the money for herself.  “Why waste it by tearing it up? I’ll just donate it to those in need,” Serenity replied and carefully tucked the check into her bag.  The two continued to window shop a little longer, had a meal, and as they were approaching the escalator to the underground parking lot after they were done, they saw Zeke, Joy, and Jenny,  The expressions on their faces were clearly dark and grim, almost as if they were having an argument.  At that moment, the three of them also spotted Serenity and Lisa approaching the escalator.  The longer Joy looked at Serenity, the angrier she became. She couldn’t understand what Serenity had done to brainwash her elder brother to make him so protective of her. He didn’t even allow a single negative word to make it past her lips without a scolding to follow it!  Especially just moments ago, when Zeke had warned her that if she picked on Serenity again, he would send her abroad!  Her anger bubbled dangerously beneath her skin, and it felt like she would explode at any moment.  Seeing how Serenity was about to walk past her to the escalator, Joy suddenly extended her foot and tripped the woman.  Serenity was cauglat off–guard, and she tumbled down the escalator.  Lisa exclaimed in shock and rushed to the side of the escalator, slamming the emergency stop button.  Even so, it was too late, and Serenity had already rolled down several steps.  Lisa hurriedly helped her friend up and glared at Joy.  “You deliberately hurt her! Do you know that your actions almost cost Serenity her life?!”  However, Joy replied indifferently, “It’s her own fault for not watching where she was going and running into my foot. That’s not my fault, and she can’t blame me now, can she?”  “stop talking nonsense with a straiglat face! We just need to look at the surveillance footage and we’ll know the truth!” Lisa retorted angrily.  Then, she anxiously looked over Serenity and asked, “Are you okay?!”  “It hurts a little,” Serenity muttered with a pasp.  Her entire body ached, and it felt like it was about to fall apart.  “Okay, I got it. I’ll take you to the hospital right away,” Lisa sald in an urgent tone.  Chapter 76  “It’s just a small fall and you want to go to the hospital? You’re making a big fuss out of nothing! What’s next? Extorting medical expenses from me?” Joy sarcastically commented.  Before anyone else could react to her words, an unexpected crisp slap rang out suddenly  The force behind the blow was strong enough that Joy almost fell off the escalator.  “Zeke! Joy screamed in disbelief as she covered her face where she had been slapped.  Zeke’s face was unnaturally pale as he bellowed, “Apologize! Apologize to Serenity! Now!” 

Chapter 75  Zeke was clearly taken aback to see the woman before him.  “Serenity!”  Meanwhile, when Joy caught sight of her brother, she immediately launched into a complaint, “Zeke! You have no idea how shameless Serenity is! She actually asked me to buy her a dress that cost seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars! Can you believe that?! She doesn’t even deserve to wear something like that!”  “Shut up!” Zeke immediately reprimanded her with no hesitation.  His face twisted into a grimm expression. His sister was so reckless! Didn’t she want to live?! Serenity had Jackson behind her back! Forget about a dress costing seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Even if it was seven hundred and twenty million, Serenity would still deserve to wear it!  “Zeke, what’s wrong with you? Why did you raise your voice? I was only talking about Serenity,” Joy protested unhappily.  “There’s nothing more to say,” Zeke replied curtly before turning to the nearby salesperson and saying, “Wrap that dress up.”  His words shocked everyone in the store.  “Zeke, what are you doing? Are you seriously buying that dress for Serenity?!” Joy asked in disbelief.  Jenny furrowed her brows, and a hint of anger flashed in her eyes.  As for the salespeople, a look of delight appeared on their faces. A sale of seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars meant substantial commission!  “Serenity, I apologize for joy’s rudeness. Please forgive her immaturity and consider this dress an apology.” Zeke spoke while ignoring Joy, his tone extremely humbled.  Joy couldn’t believe what she was seeing. With the same disbelieving expression on her face, she practically hissed, “Zeke, why are you giving her the dress? What right does she have to it?! And an apology?! Who does she think she is?!”  The more Joy spoke, the more overwhelmed Zeke felt. He was afraid if Serenity mentioned any of this to Jackson, the Shaw family would be in trouble.  “Serenity, don’t mind what Joy said, okay?” Zeke said somewhat awkwardly.  Serenity looked at Zeke in confusion. He was suddenly willing to gift her a dress worth seven hundred and twenty dollars and treated her with a cautious attitude as if he was afraid of something  That begged the question. Just what did Serenity have that Zeke would be afraid of?  Serenity pursed her lips and said, “There’s no need to give me a dress. Just give me the cash equivalent and that’s fine. You still carry your checkbook with you, right, Mr. Shaw?”  She still recalled that Zeke had a habit of carrying his checkbook wherever he went.  Zeke was visibly stunned and struggled to react while Joy glared at Serenity with contempt.  “You even have the nerve to ask for money!”  “Why shouldn’t I? You’re the one who said you’d buy me a dress from this store. I’m simply converting the dress into cash,” Serenity replied.  “Are you crazy about money or something?!” joy shot back “My brother wouldn’t-”  Just then, Zeke pulled out his checkbook, wrote in the amount stated, and handed it over to Serenity,  “Zeke!” Joy exclaimed unhappily.  “That’s enough, Joy. Since you promised Serenity something, you should follow through. I’m just helping you to fulfill your word!” Zeke berated Joy and then turned to Serenity as he mustered a forced smile. “Here, Serenity. This is the check.”  Chapter 76 

Chapter 74  1/2  “Who said we’re not buying? I can  Lisa was about to grit her teeth and buy a plece of clothing to vent her frustration so that these people wouldn’t look down on others, but Serenity quickly held her friend back  Then, she said. “If we’re not buying, are we not allowed to browse the store?”  “The two of you coming into a store that far exceeds your income raises suspicions of causing trouble. I’m simply trying to protect the rights of other customers in this store,” the supervisor replied with a seemingly reasonable explanation.  However, Serenity wasn’t buying any of that and retorted directly. “But you have no evidence, and there’s obvious doubt of consumer discrimination in your words. By the way, I’ve recorded what you’ve said on my phone. I believe it should serve as sufficient evidence which I can submit to the mall management.  “You…!”  The supervisor’s face turned red immediately, never expecting that Serenity would have recorded their conversation.  “Are you done causing a fuss, Serenity? You’re just a street sweeper, so why are you here looking at clothes beyond your pay grade? Are you missing the times when you could afford it?” Joy mucked. “If you really want an outfit from this stare, I supposed I could show you some pity and buy it for you.”  “What’s this? Are you saying that a sanitation worker can’t come in here to Inok at or buy clothes? Or does the Shaw family think all sanitation workers are inferior? If the public knew that’s how the Shaw family views sanitation workers, I wonder how they would feel?” Serenity calmly said, elevating Joy’s personal actions to the level of being a representation of the Shaw family’s views.  Joy’s face turned as red as the supervisor’s, but unfortunately for her, she couldn’t come up with anything to refute Serenity’s  statement.  If she really said that she believed sanitation workers to be inferior, there would probably be protests directed at the Shaw family online tomorrow.  “Joy was only making a casual remark. There’s no need to escalate it to this extent,” Jenny, who had remained silent the entire time, finally spoke up coldly. “Of course there’s nothing wrong with sanitation workers coming here to buy clothes. But 1 wonder, which item has caught your eye? If you’re not going to buy it, perhaps it’s best if you stop interfering in the business  of others.”  “This one’s fine,” Serenity said, pointing at a long dress hanging in the shop display which cost seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars “Miss Shaw, you said you’d buy a piece for me earlier, right? Let’s go with this one.”  Joy nearly screarned. She had never intended to go through with that! Besides, the dress was seven hundred and twenty. thousand dollars! Not seven hundred and twenty dollars!  “Oh dear, are you going back on your words, Miss Shaw?” Lisa chimed in from the side, supporting her friend.  Joy’s face turned increasingly red as time passed.  Jenny sneered, “It’s only seven hundred and twenty thousand. Joy can clearly afford it, but it’s just not worth buying such a dress for a murderer.”  Serenity’s face paled, and Lisa defended her friend, “Who are you calling a murderer?!”  “What, you ran my sister over and don’t dare admit it?” Jenny sakd as she stared directly at Serenity.  Serenity pursed her lips tightly as the scene of the car accident from all those years ago flashed through her mind once again. She would have died in the explosion if she had been even a second slower.  “I didn’t do it,” Serenity said as she met Jermy’s gaze evenly.  Jenny laughed coldly. “The judge has already made the ruling. Are you still trying to say that the accident had nothing to do with you? Weren’t you just talking about evidence earlier? All the evidence from back then pointed at you.”  Chapter 24  Serenity paled further. No matter how she tried to defend herself, all evidence had indeed pointed to her.  She was innocent, but no one apart from Lisa was willing to believe her.  “Lisa, let’s just go,” Serenity said, pulling her friend along.  Just as she was about to exit the store, they bumped into Zeke, who was making his way inside.  Act Fast: Free Bonus Time is Running Out! 

Chapter 73  It was a rare day off for Serenity on the weekend, and Lisa wasted no time in taking her out shopping.  It had been a while since they had last gone shopping together, and Serenity felt like she was back to those early days.  It was like back in the time before that incident had happened, and she would often take Lisa out shopping on weekends. They were carefree and content with life, and everything seemed beautiful then.  “By the way, what about Jack? Do you know more about him now? Like, where’s he from, or does he have any family?”  Lisa was most worried about her best friend falling for a scammer.  “I only know that his father passed away, and it seems like his mother abandoned them. He didn’t talk about anything else, and I didn’t ask,” Serenity replied with a smile.  You’re so silly. Why didn’t you ask more? At least find out what he used to do!” Lisa said with a groan.  Serenity smiled calmly. “What’s the use in knowing what he used to do? In the past, I knew every detail about Zeke–his family background, which school he attended from his childhood, and even his license plate and ID number. I remembered everything clearly, but ultimately, I still couldn’t see through him.  Lisa bit her lip. “I’m sorry.”  “Why are you apologizing?” Serenity chuckled. ‘It’s fine. I know you’re only worried about me, but right now, I really don’t care about any of those things. Besides, if he didn’t want to tell me the truth and made up stories to deceive me, it’s not like I would know, anyway. So, what’s the point of asking?”  “Well, forget about that. Come on, let’s get some clothes. I need a set of professional attire to wear. My boss at the design firm insists that I wear formal attire when meeting clients,” Lisa complained while pulling Serenity to the nearby high–end boutique.  Based on Lisa’s reasoning, they were only leaking, and that wouldn’t cost any money. They would just browse around to see what were the available and popular styles now and then buy something affordable after.  As Serenity stood inside the store, she could feel the intense gaze of the salesgirl. Her cheap outfit clashed with the atmosphere of this store.  “Oh? Who do we have here? How could someone like you be in this store? You’re practically lowering the standard of this place just by being here, you know?” A voice rang out in the store.  Serenity looked up to see two familiar figures.  One of them was Jenny, and the other was none other than Zeke’s sister, Joy.  They were both dressed in expensive luxury brand clothing and were carrying designer handbags, looking at Serenity with disdainful eyes.  Especially Joy. When she recalled her older brother’s warning the other day, she felt even more upset with Serenity.  As soon as the salespeople in the store caught sight of Joy and Jenny, they immediately rushed up to greet them warmly.  “Hello, Miss Shaw, Miss Hall We’ve recently received a new collection of the latest fashion in our store. Would you like to take a look and see if anything suits your taste? Some of them are even runway pieces that received acclaim at the Milan Fashion  Show.”  “Sure, that would be great,” Joy said and then shot Serenity a malicious smile. “Hey, do you want to try some on tuo, Serenity? But I guess with your current salary, you won’t be able to afford anything here even if you save for a year. You’re just a sanitation worker. Don’t you feel embarrassed wallding into a stone Tile Thals?”  The other employees of the store looked at Serenity in surprise and even a hint of contempt when they heard those words.  “What’s wrong with being a sanitation worker?” Lisa said indignantly. She had been browsing through clothes on the other side of the store and rushed over upon hearing the commotion. “Is there any law prohibiting sanitation workers from  entering this store and looking at clothes?”  “The question is, can you afford it?” Joy disdainfully said. “You’re just a street sweeper, so coming into a store to look at clothes you clearly can’t afford is obviously because you want some trouble.”  As she said that, Joy looked at the nearby store employees and said, “Shouldn’t you deal with people like them who intentionally come in to cause trouble, hummm?”  Joy was a regular customer here, and the employees naturally would flatter the lady from the Shaw family. So, one of the supervisors immediately walked up to Serenity and Lisa and said, “If you’re not buying any clothes, please leave for now.”
