No Escape From the Ex-husband by Summer Winters Chapter 9

Chapter 0009  Samantha was in a speeding taxi with her eyes closed.  Kendrick had ravished her repeatedly like a madman yesterday. Even now, her whole body was aching.  “Miss, we’ve arrived.” The driver informed her as the taxi came to a stop.  Thanking him, Samantha paid the fare and carried her luggage out of the taxi.  In the 24 years of her life, Samantha had never imagined that one day she would. be destitute and homeless. But she at least still had her family. Taking a deep breath, she forced a smile and stepped into the hospital.  Samantha headed to the second floor. She was met with an astonishing sight. Samantha instantly rushed over to support Evelyn, who seemed to be reeling from shock.  “Samantha…” Evelyn’s eyes were red and her face was filled with sadness.  “What’s going on?” Samantha asked. A nurse nearby answered, “Ms. Duncan, you need to pay the medical expenses before noon. The cost will be substantial if Mr. Duncan is to undergo long–term treatment in the hospital. Please prepare yourselves.”  The nurse gave them a sorry look and left with a sigh. There were many such unfortunate families like them in the hospital. Seeing such things everyday had made the nurse desensitized to such misfortune.  “Samantha…” After she was pressed for payment yesterday, Evelyn was left with nothing. The medical expenses were between 100 to 200 thousand dollars.  In the past, Evelyn wouldn’t have batted an eye at this number. She had no way to accumulate such a significant sum now. Even if she were to sell everything she owned, it wouldn’t be enough.  Gritting her teeth, Samantha reassured her, “It’s okay, Mom.” She racked her brain and tried to  work out how much she had.  Samantha was the only daughter of the Duncan family. But, she had handed all the shares she owned to Kendrick on their wedding day. She was holding 30% of Duncan Group’s shares.  She had not asked for any money from her family since she married Kendrick. Samantha had not worked in those three years as well.  +15 BONOS  She thought of how things have now turned out.  “Mom, I have the money. Kendrick gave me a large sum when we divorced. It should be enough to cover Dad’s medical expenses,” Samantha said. She tried to sound cheerful.  Shocked, Evelyn choked back the tears and asked, “Divorce? Why?”  “As you know, matters of the heart can never be forced.” Samantha hung her head, hiding the bitter look in her eyes.  She was nothing more than a pawn to Kendrick. Now that Duncan Group had gone bankrupt, she had lost her value.  Sighing, Evelyn was about to say something when Samantha interrupted her. She led Evelyn to sit. “Mom, you should rest here for now. I will settle the medical bill and find a place to stay.”  Evelyn had no choice but to agree. “Alright. Please be careful.”  “I will.” Holding back tears, Samantha nodded vigorously and headed out. As soon as the door shut, Samantha’s body went weak, and she slumped to the ground. Evelyn was none the wiser.  There was 80 thousand dollars left in her bank account. After packing her belongings, she only had her everyday clothes with her. Samantha left the valuable jewelry behind untouched. She had wanted to preserve her dignity.  Recalling this, Samantha couldn’t help but laugh at her worthless pride. Samantha sat on the ground in a heap, ignoring her disheveled hair. Her mind was presently in chaos.  Gritting her teeth, Samantha was determined to protect her parents.  A sudden ringing from her phone disrupted her train

Chapter 0007  Samantha calmly enquired, “What are the odds?”  “Around one percent,” the doctor answered truthfully, after some hesitation. After all, he was bound by professional ethics.  “Alright, I understand. Thank you.”  “Um…” The doctor’s lips twitched, but he didn’t say anything else. He shook his head and left.  Samantha stood stiffly at the entrance of the hospital ward. She realized that she had lost the courage to enter.  Harry had loved and cherished her. Since she was a child, Samantha was the apple of his eye. He had given her the best of everything.  Three years ago, Samantha was determined to marry Kendrick. Harry knew that Kendrick was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Still, he willingly gave 30% of Duncan Group’s shares as a bridal gift.  No one could have predicted this. Her grand wedding wound up being the source of her misery three years later.  Evelyn heard noise outside the door. Puzzled, she exited the room to see Samantha covering her teary face.  “Samantha, what happened? Did they hurt you?” Evelyn was elated to see Samantha. She pulled her into the ward and examined her from head to toe. When she confirmed for herself that Samantha was unharmed, she sighed in relief.  Samantha wrapped her arms around Evelyn’s waist. Breathing in her mother’s familiar scent, she choked up. “Mom, I’m sorry.”  Samantha lamented the turn of events. She was the eldest daughter of the Duncan family with a loving father and caring mother. She should have had a happy marriage, but that had been completely ruined. All because she loved the wrong person and married the wrong man.  Evelyn stroked the top of Samantha’s head. She sighed, “Silly child, your father always loved to see you smile. Even a slight frown from you would make him feel heartbroken. If he knew you were sobbing like this, his heart would break into pieces.”  Evelyn struck a pose. Imitating Harry’s tone, she said, “Samantha, defend  1/3  +15 BONOS  whole team of bodyguards to teach them a lesson!‘  It brought back memories of Samantha’s past with her father. Evelyn mimicked Harry so well that Samantha couldn’t help smiling through her tears.  Seeing Samantha smile, Evelyn felt relieved. She reassured her, “It’s okay. This isn’t the worst possible outcome. At least, we are all still alive together. I’m grateful for that.”  Evelyn’s positive outlook rubbed off on Samantha. The ache in her heart eased gradually.  Meanwhile, Martha was tidying up the house. When she heard the doorbell ring, she rushed over to open the door. “Ma’am, you’re home …”  A woman with meticulous makeup and a curvaceous figure walked in. Taking off her sunglasses, she revealed her alluring eyes and said with a smile, “Mrs. White, long time no see.”  Martha rubbed her eyes in disbelief. After a while, she said cautiously, “Ms. Snider?”  The woman, Linda Snider, had a beaming smile on her face. “I didn’t expect you  to remember me.  Earlier in the evening, Kendrick returned to Ford Residence. This was perhaps the earliest he had ever returned home in the three years since his marriage.  When Kendrick opened the door, he saw a woman sitting on the sofa. She had her back to him, and she was flipping through some magazines.  Kendrick assumed that Samantha was just playing hard to get this afternoon. Raising an eyebrow, he cleared his throat and approached her.  As Kendrick expected, the woman turned around eagerly when she heard him. You’re back?”  To his surprise, it wasn’t Samantha that greeted him. Kendrick scrutinized her closely and exclaimed, “Linda, when did you arrive here?”

Chapter 0001 Samantha Duncan found herself alone once again on their third wedding anniversary.  The dishes on the table were cold and tasteless. The clock on the wall showed it was 10:00 pm sharp.
