Chapter 40  Wilbur smiled. “Timothy’s a good sheriff. I’m sure he’ll get to the bottom of this.” Faye was caught off guard. She was still angry at Timothy, but here Wilbur was calling him a good guy. On second thought, however, it seemed like Timothy had not done anything wrong. He was only doing his own job. Besides, it was perfectly understandable that he was angry at her for trying to threaten him with Bowie. Timothy did, from a professional view, seem like a good cop. Wilbur said to Faye, “Alright, you should go to work. I told you that the truth will come out in the end and lies will never stand the test of justice.” Faye could only nod, then left for Cape. There were all these people over there, including herself, who could not rest just yet. She had to plan out the next step, and it was not the time to rest yet. Over at Willow Corp Yvonne sat in her office, feeling like she was at her wit’s end. Willow Corp had been bombarded with messages from banks in the past two days, all of them declaring they wanted to stop working with Willow Corp. Some of their other partners had already reached out to them personally for the same reason as well. Yvonne understood that these people were all acting under the unspoken pressure that was Cape International. She had been foolish enough to get a divorce from Wilbur to remarry Blake, but Blake had lost his position as chairman on the day of the wedding and was even arrested for breaking the law. Faye’s plan had caused Willow Corp to completely lose their reputation, and Yvonne was now the laughingstock for everyone. Under all those external pressures, Willow Corp was finally facing a crisis. If the Willow family could not endure this ordeal, it would be the end of them. Nevertheless, business was like personal health. Disease and sickness always came like a landslide. What was once a top corporation worth billions of dollars could crumble just like that but rebuilding it would take far longer than that. Just as she was stuck in her worries, her mother Miranda came running into the office happily. Yvonne saw her mother and asked impatiently, “Mom, what are you doing here?” “I’ve got some good news,” Miranda said mysteriously. Yvonne stopped short, before growing quite happy. She was more than eager to hear about good news at a time like this. “What good news?” She hurried to ask. Miranda looked nothing but smug. “Wilbur’s been arrested.” “Wilbur Penn? Arrested?” Yvonne could not wrap her head around this. Miranda was ecstatic. “Yes! He sexually a**aulted someone last night and got arrested.” Yvonne was in shock for a long time, before finally processing what her mother had just said. “That can’t be.” “What do you mean it can’t be? He was arrested.” Miranda was still smug and pleased. 2/2 Yvonne frowned. “How did you find out about this? Who did he a**ault?” “Just some random girl. I heard about it through someone,” Miranda said. Yvonne’s brows were tightly knit as she fell deep into thought. That was a big deal. On second thought, however, it did not really make sense. Wilbur had been with her for three years as a legally married couple. Ever since she had turned him down. once, he had never made a move on her before. And now, he was with that gorgeous CEO, Faye Yves. With the power Wilbur had as well as Faye’s looks, it made no sense for Wilbur to force himself onto someone instead of just taking what was right in front of him. Even if Faye was not in the picture at all, or she turned him down, all Wilbur had to do was put a word out, and countless starlets and celebrities would jump at the chance to be with him. Yvonne thought it through, then slowly looked at her mother. “Please tell me you’re not the one behind this.” “Wha… What do you mean that I was behind this? Miranda’s gaze darted away nervously. Yvonne knew the truth at once. She flared up in anger at once as she shouted, “Answer me! Did you arrange for this to happen? No, I didn’t,” Miranda replied obstinately. However, Yvonne did not believe her and roared, “Don’t you know what our family is facing? The Willow family will be done for if you’re really the one behind this!”

Chapter 39  “Officer Evans, what do you mean by that?” Faye looked confused. Timothy smirked. “I see that you’ve even got Chief Hemmington involved. The Cape Consortium really is something.” “What are you trying to imply? We just happened to run into each other. You’re overthinking this,” Faye replied with a smile. Timothy was nothing but annoyed. Did she think he was an idiot? It was too much of a coincidence! Chief Hemmington just happened to be running a spot check on his station and also happened to bump into Faye. Bowie even shook her hand voluntarily. Of course, that was supposed to imply something to Timothy. Faye said, “Officer Evans, I’m here to bail Wilbur Penn out on a pending trial.” “He can’t leave yet,” Timothy said coldly. Faye frowned. “Officer Evans, do you know that Cape’s legal department has a nickname of its own?” “What nickname?” Timothy said. Faye smiled. “People liked to joke that Cape’s legal department is the ‘sure winner of Seechertown. Of course, that’s just a joke. I’m sure you wouldn’t want them to take over this case though, would you? You’d be very busy if that happened.” “Are you threatening me?” Timothy asked coldly. Faye waved her hands at once. “Oh, I’d never dare to do something like that. I think that Cape should be capable of bailing one person out, though.” Timothy was practically grinding his teeth in fury. Finally, he had to experience this woman’s tricks firsthand. She was definitely going to be a problem if he refused to let Wilbur out that day. Bowie was sure to do something about it as well, and Timothy’s power was limited to the head of security. Bowie had not said anything during his visit, but the message was clear enough. Timothy would be offending him if he did not let Wilbur out. At last, Timothy said to an officer, “Take Miss Yves to fill out the paperwork.” “Of course.” Faye smiled and entered with her secretary in tow. Timothy stomped back to his office in a fit of rage. Not long after, an officer came in with his report. “Sir, we have released Wilbur Penn on bail. Are we still going to proceed with investigating the case?” It was clear that the officer himself knew that he was treading risky water from his cautious tone. Timothy flew to his feet at once. “Of course we are. Take Shelby Seacrest to have her wounds checked and run a full checkup.” “Got it.” The officer was about to leave, but Timothy stopped him again. “Run a background check on Shelby Seacrest too. Find out if her statement matches her actual life.” 2/2 “Got it.” The policeman left, and Timothy fell into deep thought again. There was nothing he could do on Wilbur’s end. There was too much power there for him to do anything. Maybe there would be a way out of this if he started from Shelby’s end. If Shelby’s information turned out to be correct and she hadn’t lied at all, that would mean that Wilbur had been lying. If that was the case, he was going to follow through with the investigation, Bowie be damned. Over on another end. Faye drove Wilbur back to the house, and the two of them sat in the living room. Faye was still fuming. “Shelby Seacrest! How dare she do that! I’m not going to let this go.” To think that she had been so saddened about Shelby’s life that she couldn’t sleep last night, only for her to be played the next moment. The feeling of betrayal filled Faye with rage, especially the fact that Wilbur had been arrested and there was nothing she could do. That was really too much. Wilbur said in a low voice, “She’s not the mastermind. Don’t get too mad.” “Who is, then?” Faye asked. Wilbur frowned. “I can roughly guess who it is, but I’m not going to say anything without proof. Let’s just wait for the results.” “Wait for results? Aren’t we going to look into this ourselves at all?” Faye asked, shocked. 

Chapter 38  Timothy fell silent for a while before saying, “Guess you aren’t going to ‘fess up.” “Nothing happened for me to confess, so why should I? Wilbur replied. Timothy said, “Two completely opposing statements. One of you has to be lying. You do know that the consequences of lying in a place like this are extremely severe.” “I know they’re severe, but isn’t it up to you to prove who’s telling the truth?” Wilbur said. Timothy smirked coldly. “Of course we will, but you’ll have to be responsible for what you said.” “I know I am. I trust that you’re a responsible person who will get to the bottom of this,” Wilbur said with a smile. Timothy fell silent. Judging from how cases like this usually went, the women were less prone to lie. That was why he was leaning more towards believing Shelby But Wilbur seemed extremely calm and confident. He was either really good at keeping his cool, or he was telling the truth. The whole thing was a little complicated. It would require some tricks from Timothy. A moment later, Timothy said, “Is there anything else you’d like to add?” “Nope,” Wilbur said. Timothy said, “Send him to the detainment room.” “Got it.” The policeman got up, releasing Wilbur’s wrists so he could sign his statement before he was sent to the detainment room. Timothy returned to his office. He rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. There were no security cameras in the house. Neither party’s statement was enough to prove that the a**ault had happened or not. However, sexual a**ault was a severe issue and had to be treated with caution. Timothy lit up a cigarette, falling silent. The next morning. Timothy woke up on the couch in his office. He cleaned himself up slightly before preparing to head to Wilbur’s house for further investigation. At the same time, Shelby’s wounds were investigated, and a more thorough inspection was performed to check for any further indications of a**ault. Yet just then, a policeman came running in hurriedly. “Officer Evans, Chief Hemmington is here.” “Oh? Why didn’t he say hi to me?” Timothy got dressed in a hurry, running outside. Just then, a man in his fifties walked in with two people. He was dressed casually. Timothy walked up and greeted him at once, “Chief Hemmington! Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” Bowie and Timothy shook hands, and the former smiled. “I’m just here for a spot check. There was no need for that.” “Yes, I suppose there wasn’t,” Timothy said. 5 77 Bowie looked around him before saying. “Nothing big has happened around here lately, right?” “No.” Timothy could sense something was off as soon as Bowle sald the words. He turned to look at Bowie, then said, “There was a sexual a**ault case that came in last night. We’re looking into it right now.” “Oh. That’s a pretty severe case. You have to make good use of your time and make sure the victim gets justice,” Bowie said. Timothy nodded. Bowie circled the station without pausing much, then walked out after that. Timothy walked him to the door, where Bowie patted him on the shoulder. “I’m sure you’ll do a good job. You’re a young man, and you’ve got a bright future ahead of you.” “Thank you, Chief.” Timothy smiled placatingly. Bowie nodded, “Well, I won’t take up more of your time. Goodbye now.” Just as Bowie was about to leave, a Benz stopped in front of the station. Faye got out of the car, her secretary in tow. “Oh, my, Miss Yves! What brings you here?” Bowie greeted her warmly, shaking her hand. Faye was all smiles as she shook Bowie’s hand. “A friend of mine has something here he needs to sort out, so here I am.” “Is that so? Il get out of your way and leave you to it, then.” Bowie smiled, got into his car, and drove off. Faye stepped into the station, but Timothy blocked her path with a frosty expression. “You’re certainly. playing with a heavy hand.” 

Chapter 37  1/2  “Understood.”  Everyone knew well enough just what the Cape was capable of. The Kardon Province branch alone had enough resources and influence to buy out the biggest media platform there was right now.  If they were to gather all of Cape’s resources in the entire country, there would be few international media brands that would be any match for them. That was why Faye had said those words so firmly.  Yet she had more to say. “Send out a warning to the smaller, anonymous‘ news channels as well. If they dare to even post anything about Cape, we’ll make sure they disappear from the internet forever.”  “Got it.”  “Communications.”  “Yes.” The head of the communications department stood up.  Faye said coldly. “Hire whoever it takes to set up a task force to immediately beat down all possible allegations that might surface. Take down any and all comments against Cape and its owner or engage until they die down.”  “Yes.”  “Everyone be on standby, right now,” Faye ordered.  Everyone in the room scrambled to their feet at once, hurrying to their desks.  Faye leaned back in her chair, letting out a long sigh.  The comments and discourse would not be a problem for now. After all, she had put out a warning and no one would dare to go against a force like the Cape Consortium with how powerful they were.  But she could not just sit here and do nothing, either.  Faye pondered briefly, before saying to her secretary. “Get me in touch with Chief Bowle Hemmington. I’d like to speak to him on the phone.”  “Alright, I’ll call him right now.” Her secretary hurried out at once.  Calling up someone like this in the middle of the night was honestly rather rude, but Faye could not care about that right now.  A little over half an hour later, the secretary returned with a phone that she handed to Faye. “I’ve got him  on the line.”  Faye nodded, taking the phone.  Over at the police station.  Wilbur was brought into the interrogation room. He was sitting on a special chair with both his wrists restrained as well.  Timothy and his two subordinates began the interrogation.  “Name.”  “Wilbur Penn.”  “Occupation.”  Chap 37  “Unemployed.”  Timothy looked at Wilbur coldly. “Unemployed? Aren’t you from Cape Consortium?”  “I don’t hold a position in Cape,” Wilbur replied calmly.  He wasn’t lying, after all. He had indeed founded Cape but was not in charge of running it at all.  Only the higher–ups of Cape knew just how powerful Wilbur was to Cape.  The team of guards who specifically worked under him was enough to stop anyone from getting any  ideas.  But there were only a few people who knew how powerful and terrifying Wilbur was.  Timothy scoffed coldly. “Shelby Seacrest made a report, accusing you of sexually a**aulting her. Did this happen?”  “No.” Wilbur said at once.  Timothy’s gaze was razor–sharp as he stared at Wilbur. “Well, how do you explain the bruises on her body, the torn clothing on both of you and your fingerprints everywhere?”  “She ran to my room on her own in the middle of the night trying to seduce me but failed. So, she got closer and hara**ed me, and I got my fingerprints on her when I pushed her away. It was her who ripped the pajamas, too,” Wilbur said.  Before Timothy could say anything, one of the policemen shouted, “Do you think we’re stupid? How dare you lie to us! As if anyone would believe what you just said.”  “I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m telling the truth,” Wilbur said.  made  Just then, Timothy said coldly, “But Miss Shelby Seacrest said the complete opposite. She said your her come into your room and asked her to sleep with you. She rejected you, and you forced yourself on her. She fought back, then escaped after that to make a police report.”  “She’s trying to frame me. Of course, she’s going to make up a lie that suits her narrative,” Wilbur said calmly.  Chapter 30 

Chapter 36  Faye moved out of the way. Timothy entered the living room with his subordinates and Shelby. Faye’s ice- cold gaze swept past Shelby’s face.  Shelby looked absolutely pitiful, following behind them with her head bowed.  Timothy came up to Wilbur and asked, “Are you Wilbur Penn?”  “That’s me,” Wilbur said.  Timothy said coldly, “Miss Shelby Seacrest here made a report saying that she was sexually a**aulted in your house. You are to cooperate with us immediately and return to the station with us for investigation.”  “Sure. That’s not a problem. Let me change my clothes,” Wilbur said.  Timothy looked at Wilbur’s torn pajamas. “You can change, but we need to take the pajamas you’re wearing away with us.”  “Of course.” Wilbur got up and headed for his bedroom. Timothy glanced at the other two policemen, and one of them followed after Wilbur at once.  Not long after, Wilbur came out in a new set of casual clothes. The pajamas were put into a clear bag by the officer.  “Come with us.” Timothy was about to take Wilbur away.  Faye panicked at the sight. “No, you can’t just leave with him! That’s not happening.”  Wilbur was hardly the type who needed to force himself onto a girl. Faye knew that better than anyone, here.  The two of them would’ve been a thing if Wilbur had been after anything like that. Shelby was hardly even someone of consideration. To think that she was accusing him of sexual a**ault, too! What a joke!  Yet Timothy said, “Who are you? Don’t get in the way of our investigation.”  “I’m the CEO of Cape International’s headquarters, Faye Yves,” Faye said loudly.  Timothy frowned. “I know of Cape’s big name, but that doesn’t really matter here. We’ve got to investigate everyone according to the law. You can’t stop us.”  “Well, you’re not leaving with him! I’d like to talk to your superior!” Faye shouted.  Timothy raised his voice as well, “I don’t care who you get in touch with. We’re just investigating the case as we normally do when we receive a report. If you insist on disrupting our investigation, we’ll take you in  too.”  “You wouldn’t dare!” Faye shouted back, unwilling to back down.  Just then, Wilbur raised a hand. “Stop arguing. The truth will prevail in the end. Do what you need to do.”  His words calmed Faye down a good deal, but she was still angry. Her chest heaved as she glowered at Shelby.  “It was him, right?” Timothy pointed at Wilbur, asking Shelby.  Shelby clutched the hem of her pajamas, nodding feebly.  “Take him away.” Timothy wasted no more time, leading Wilbur out of the house at once.  Faye watched as Wilbur was taken away, and the police siren was turned on. She picked up a mug.  Chap 35  2/2  smashing it onto the floor in fury.  The next second, she took out her phone and made a call to her secretary.  “Send a message to everyone in the PR department. Have them gathered up in the office’s meeting room within half an hour. Anyone who doesn’t show up on time will be fired immediately.”  After hanging up, she changed into office clothes at top speed before rushing off to the Cape Consortium headquarters.  Half an hour later, Faye was walking through Cape’s meeting room doors.  Her secretary, as well as everyone from the PR department, were all waiting for her with nervous expressions on their faces. They rarely had to work overtime at this company, let alone be called for such an urgent meeting.  Faye cut off everyone’s greetings. She took a seat at the head of the table and said, “Our boss is being framed, and was just taken away for investigation.”  “What?” The crowd was shocked. They all knew that the real boss of Cape Consortium spent a lot of time with Miss Yves, and everyone had been gossiping about what the two were to each other.  What had happened for Wilbur to be framed and arrested? That was definitely a big deal to the company.  Faye paid no mind to their shock and curiosity. “PR.”  “Yes.” The head of the PR department stood up at once  “Inform all news and content platforms, and all social media platforms as well. Tell them to refrain from publishing or posting anything related to Cape International, including the word ‘Cape. If they dont listen, Cape will show them no mercy.” 

Chapter 35  Shelby’s head was bowed, her tone feeble as she asked, “Wilbur, are you and Miss Faye married?”  “No,” Wilbur said, sitting up.  “What are you two, then?”  “Colleagues.”  After Shelby heard his reply, she sat down next to Wilbur on his bed. She leaned towards him, the front of her dress falling to expose her cleavage and her fair, smooth legs.  “Wilbur, I’m really grateful for you but… I don’t know what I should do. You don’t think I’m a bad person, do you?” Shelby looked at Wilbur.  Wilbur took in the sight of a pitiful–looking Shelby gazing at him. “We can talk in the living room. This isn’t very appropriate.”  Yet just then, Shelby inched even closer. She was practically running against Wilbur’s body as she cooed, Wilbur, I need some comfort. Can you make me feel better?”  It was the middle of the night, and there was a beauty practically throwing herself at Wilbur. Any other man would have found it hard to resist.  Yet just then, Wilbur could sense that something was off.  He got off the bed at once. “Let’s talk outside.”  Shelby saw that, then gritted her teeth before pouncing on Wilbur and hugging him tightly.  Wilbur roared, “What are you doing?” He pushed Shelby away as he spoke.  However, Shelby had a vice grip on Wilbur while she tugged and ripped at his clothes insistently. Wilbur flared up in anger and pushed her away harshly. Shelby fell to the floor, landing hard as she let out a cry of pain.  Just then, Wilbur turned and came to the living room before turning on the lights.  Shelby followed him out quickly as well, but she had ripped most of her pajamas to show a great deal of skin. She screamed and sobbed, rushing out of the house.  Wilbur was confused. He had no idea what had just happened.  Just then, Faye had heard the noise as well. She bumbled down the stairs sleepily, before taking in the sight of Wilbur’s torn pajamas and startling at once. “What just happened?”  “I’m not too sure either, but I don’t think it’s anything good,” Wilbur said.  Faye sat Wilbur down at once, trying to get him to calm down.  Wilbur organized his emotions, before describing what had just happened.  Faye was in shock after listening to him.  Of course, she would trust Wilbur without a doubt. Shelby, on the other hand, was a different story.  Shelby was still a victim when they found her, a helpless girl with no one to rely on. Why did she have to do something like that?  Just as Faye was still contemplating, Wilbur said, “Someone’s trying to get me in trouble. You should prepare yourself.”  Chapter 35  272  “Who’s trying to do that?” Faye said, shocked.  Wilbur shook his head. “I can’t tell for sure. I’ve offended a good number of people recently. This could’ve been planned by any of them.”  “What should I do, then?” Faye asked in a panic.  Wilbur fell silent for a beat, before slowly saying. “I might be taken away by the police in no time, you’ll  need to sort this out for me. The Cape Consortium cannot have anything to do with this.”  Faye was about to say more when the front door of the house was violently banged on.  Wilbur said calmly, “Open it.”  Faye took a deep breath, then got up to open the door, All she could see were Shelby and three policemen standing there.  “Is Wilbur Penn in?” One of the middle–aged policemen asked loudly.  Faye said, “Who are you, and where are you from? What business do you have with Wilbur?”  “My name is Timothy Evans. I’m the head of security here. These two are officers working under me. We’ve received a report of a sexual a**ault case, and we’re here to investigate it,” the sheriff said. Faye glanced at Wilbur, who said emotionlessly, “Let them in.”  Chappé de 

Chapter 34  She was alone in the middle of the night, barefoot and only clad in pajamas that were caked with dirt. Anyone could tell that something had happened to her.  Tears streamed down the girl’s face, but she remained silent. Faye continued to try coaxing the girl, while Wilbur could only stare.  A while later, the girl’s emotions were finally a little more stable.  Faye brought the girl to her room and gave her a new set of pajamas to change into. She washed the girl’s face as well before bringing her to the living room again.  Looking at the girl then, she was honestly quite pretty. It was unclear just what had happened to her.  Faye made the girl a bowl of pasta and continued to give her advice and comfort.  At last, the girl started talking after she ate.  The girl’s name was Shelby Seacrest. She was from a rural village and had a boyfriend who was going to university in Seechertown.  She had come to Seechertown with her boyfriend and worked to pay her boyfriend’s school fees. But after he had graduated and found a good job, he started treating her worse and worse with physical and verbal abuse.  That happened again tonight. He lashed out at her out of nowhere and kicked her out of their house.  She had nothing on her and nowhere to go, so she could only wander the streets on her own until she ran into Wilbur and Faye.  Faye was fuming at the story. How could someone so heartless and ungrateful exist? He could hardly quality as a human being!  “Don’t worry, young lady. You can stay here for now, I’ll arrange a job for you, so you don’t have to worry about anything. People like that aren’t worth a single tear from you,‘ Faye fumed.  Shelby nodded sadly. Faye gave Shelby a hug, her heart aching as she patted Shelby’s back.  Wilbur sighed as well. That man really crossed the line.  “Do you want him to pay you back? I’m sure he still owes you a fair amount of money now,” Wilbur said. The girl shook her head. “That’s alright. I don’t want to have anything to do with him anymore.” Wilbur could only let it be. If he were to have it his way, that man would be in big trouble.  Seeing Shelby finally calm down, Wilbur said, “Faye, take good care of her. I’m going to get some rest.”  Faye nodded, and Wilbur returned to his room. He sighed.  This girl was far, far too kind.  Faye and Shelby chatted for a long time before she brought her to a guest room.  Shelby was clearly shocked by the luxury of the room.  Faye said, “Get some rest and think about what you want to do. You can tell me tomorrow. Don’t worry, I’m pretty capable. I’ll get it done for you.”  Shelby nodded hard, her expression grateful.  212  Faye smiled and returned to her room. Yet she found it hard to fall asleep with how angry she was. Shelby’s fate was far too pitiful, and Faye was even considering tracking down that bastard to teach him a lesson.  The night slowly darkened.  Shelby tossed and turned in bed and could not sleep, her expression solemn.  A long while later, she took a deep breath and walked out of her room. She came to Wilbur’s room, slowly twisting the doorknob open.  Wilbur, who was currently meditating while lying on his bed, opened his eyes to see the door of his room wide open.  Wilbur did not move. He channeled the night vision he had cultivated and was able to tell that it was Shelby who had come into his room.  All that could be seen was Shelby standing at the foot of Wilbur’s bed for a while, before calling out, “Hey, are you asleep?”  Wilbur turned to switch on the lights next to his bed.  He saw the uneasy expression on Shelby’s face and frowned. “It’s very late now. Is something the matter?” 

Chapter 33  Jose’s forehead was filled with sweat, and he bowed deeply to Wilbur. “Young man, I admit that I was boasting earlier. Please forgive me.” “That’s right. Please spare us and show mercy,” Mike piped up as well. Wilbur’s expression darkened, and he turned to look at Mike. “Show you mercy? I don’t remember you being merciful earlier.” Mike’s expression turned ugly from his anger, unable to say anything else. Jose knew he had messed up, but those words he said earlier were merely a boast! He was not going to take off himself just like that. He looked at Wilbur with an apologetic expression. “It’s my fault for not knowing my items, young man. I’m sorry. I’m willing to compensate you ten million dollars in exchange for your forgiveness.” Wilbur smiled. Of course, he was not going to make Jose take his own life over such a trivial matter. However, the 10,000,000 dollars was another matter. After all, the two had been quite rude to him earlier. Wilbur wet his finger with the tea from John’s teacup, then wrote down his account numbers on the table. “Very well. I’ll take you up on that offer.” After saying that, he got up and left. Just then, Jose let out a long sigh. He memorized the number in his head as he fumed, “Motherf*cker. You really screwed me over this time, Duran Jarin. I’m going to get you for sure.” Upon speaking, he first transferred the money over to Wilbur’s account before saying to Mike, “My apologies, Mister Cannon. Let me take care of Duran, and I’ll return to Seechertown and provide you with a proper settlement. Please rest a**ured.” Mike could only nod as Jose left furiously. That man had really embarra**ed him big time. Not long after Jose had left, Faye came down to the main hall with the man and woman from earlier. Faye glanced at the empty hall and said, “Mister Cannon, wasn’t there going to be an auction? Where did everyone go?” “It has ended,” Mike said, embarra**ed. Faye shrugged, nodding her head. “I’ll be going too, then.” Upon speaking, Faye turned and left. Wilbur was already waiting for her in the car when she got outside. Faye got in the car. “Why are you out here?” “I had some food and watched a good show. There wasn’t much else after that, so I just left,” Wilbur said, driving home. It was already past nine, and the pair chatted idly. All of a sudden, a figure seemed to appear out of nowhere, walking across the road as if blind to the car. Wilbur braked sharply, and the car halted at once. However, the person was still hit. Wilbur cursed under his breath, and the pair got out of the car hurriedly to take a closer look. All that could be seen was a girl who looked to be in her twenties. She was dressed in pajamas, lying in front of the car barefoot with a hollow expression. Chap 23 Wilbur hurriedly checked her for any injuries. Aside from her kneecaps being slightly swollen, she was, thankfully, unharmed. “Are you alright? Do I need to send you to the hospital?” Faye asked. The girl shook her head slowly, her eyes teary. Faye looked at Wilbur, slightly perplexed by the situation. Wilbur frowned. “I think we should still take you there in case anything happens.” He had actually used his spirit energy to inspect the girl’s whole body, and it was nothing serious. He was certain that the girl had run into some kind of trouble, and that was why she was in this state despite not being very hurt by the car However, the girl refused to speak, only shaking her head slowly with a lifeless expression on her face. Wilbur frowned. “Let’s take her back for now. She seems to have something on her mind. We can talk tomorrow after she’s gotten some rest for the night.” Faye nodded, then helped the girl into the car before driving back to Castlebury.” Faye helped the girl onto the couch before making her a cup of tea. “Young lady, what happened to you? How did you end up like this?” 

Chapter 32  “How dare you break my precious incense holder! You’re asking for it!” Jose roared furiously. He shook his robes, and a strong wave of energy surged at Wilbur,  The crowd’s expression shifted as well. That was supposed to be a legendary spirit weapon. That guy was just too bold.  Master Jose was a famous cultivator from the Strictón Province. That guy was done for.  Just as everyone was in shock at Wilbur’s nerves, he smiled. “Open your eyes and take a closer look.”  The crowd leaned forward at the broken incense holder, baffled by the situation.  Wilbur said, “The incense holder is just a replica of an antique. There’s a piece of oud in there that seals the powers in it, letting out a glow and fragrance to make it look like a spirit weapon. It’ll disappear in three months, tops. I can’t believe such an obvious counterfeit technique was enough to fool all of you.”  Wilbur’s words left everyone in shock, and the crowd began to inspect the broken incense holder.  Everyone in the crowd knew enough to be able to tell with one glance from the crack that it was a new item, and there was a piece of oud inside of it. The oud was, admittedly, of rather high quality.  Even with that being the case, the incense holder was no spirit weapon. The cost of making something like that was 10,000 dollars, at most.  Everyone had fallen for its appearance and thought it was real.  The truth was now out, and everyone was speechless as they looked at Jose.  Jose himself finally saw that it was fake. All at once, his bravado vanished as sweat beaded on hist  forehead.  Wilbur smiled. “Would you like to explain yourself, Master Jose?”  “…” Jose was speechless, sweat rolling down his face.  Mike saw that the situation was going south. His expression shifted as he thought of a plan.  His father had spent decades of hard work building a good reputation for this private club.  It just barely ended up in his hands, and something like this had happened. That completely caught him. off guard.  How was he going to face his father’s rage? More importantly, the club’s trustworthiness was in danger of being ruined just like that.  The stares from the crowd were making Jose more and more nervous by the second.  At last, he let out a sigh and bowed to the crowd. “I’m so sorry, everyone. I, Jose Smithson, fell for a cheap trick. Please accept my apology.”  “What’s the meaning of this, Master Jose? You’d better explain yourself,” John hissed, his expression dark.  Jose kept going, “To be honest, I was sold this item by a fellow cultivator I just met. I was inexperienced and foolish and fell for his tricks. It’s my fault for being so arrogant, I’ll admit to that. I’ll compensate every single person here five million dollars as an apology, I hope you don’t find fault in me for this.”  John frowned. “It seems like you did fall for someone else’s tricks. Well, since you’ve apologized sincerely, we won’t take compensation on account of the many times we’ve done business with each other. We trust you.”  2/2  Upon speaking, John got to his feet and left.  It looked like a good–natured gesture, without blaming Jose or wanting compensation. Yet even so, this still put Jose in a difficult situation.  The crowd saw that and slowly left on their own. No one asked for either.  compensation of five million dollars  No one there that night saw five million dollars as a large amount at all. Besides, Jose was a proper, reputable cultivator. Taking the money might end up offending him, which was not a good deal.  The crowd leaving early had a different meaning as well.  That was because Jose had bragged earlier that if his item was proven to be a fake, he would have to end himself right there.  Just then, Wilbur looked at Jose with a dark smile. “What do you have to say for yourself, Master Jose?”
