Chapter 25  75% 11:04  Josephine was not there when the family was having late–night snacks. However, she showed up in the living room and took Nydia’s seat, talking and laughing with Maren and Lacie.  Cade was on his phone, sitting on the lounge chair opposite those women, emotionless.  Seeing Nydia walk downstairs, Maren immediately lost her smile. Instead, she shot a disdainful look at Nydia.  Lacie chose to ignore Nydia. She took Josephine’s hand and said to Maren, “Maren, check Josephine’s hand. It is as  smooth as milk.”  Maren grabbed Josephine’s hand over and added, “Of course. Josephine is a fair lady from a wealthy family and the apple of her parent’s eyes, unlike someone who masquerades as a socialite even though she’s from a declining family.”  Nydia pretended not to understand Maren and Lacie’s sarcasm. She calmly walked downstairs, tided her dress, and gracefully sat down.  Seeing that, Maren immediately got furious.  Nydia ignored Maren’s emotion, thinking, ‘You hate to see me here, don’t you? Then I’m sitting here to disgust you back. Let’s see who will laugh till the end.’  Lacie brought her three–year–old daughter, Grace Campbell, with her.  Grace was playing with building blocks. They appeared too complex for a three–year–old, so she could not complete them herself. She blinked and looked at Cade, murmuring inside, ‘Cade is the smartest person in the family. I’m sure that building.  these blocks is a piece of cake for him.‘  Unexpectedly, Cade’s gaze had never fallen on Grace.  Grace begged, “Cade, help me.”  Hearing Grace’s request, Cade finally raised his head and got a second off his phone. He looked over but did not take action. Instead, he even gave Grace a disdainful look.  וי  Grace was so angry that her face turned red. She pursed her lips and complained, “Cade is annoying. I can do it without his help.” She looked like the angry bird from a video game.  Nydia chuckled at Grace’s funny expression. She walked over, crouched down, and asked with a smile, “Need a hand? Point out where you’re stuck, and I’ll help you figure it out.”  Grace’s eyes lit up. She pointed at the train railway […]

Chapter 24  75% 11:04  It was an exquisite purple feather quill pen crafted from silver, which cost Nydia over 200,000 dollars.  Nydia stood up and handed the present to Orson, saying, “Happy birthday, Orson! Here is a present to celebrate your future health, wealth, and happiness.”  Orson revealed a satisfied smile and nodded to indicate Nydia to sit down.  Maren felt Nydia embarrassed her before the women folks. Thus, she glared at Nydia, took out a key from her purse, and respectfully handed it to Orson, saying, “Orson, remember how you mentioned wanting to spend your winter in Hepcaster? Well, I happened to tell Josephine about it, and guess what? She went ahead and bought you a house there. I’ve already checked it out myself. It’s quite lovely. Nestled in the mountains, facing the sea, the scenery is breathtaking. It’s the perfect spot for your retirement.”  Everyone at the table fell into silence once Maren finished her words.  Nydia gripped her fork more tightly and buried herself in the food. To everyone else, Maren’s words seemed not to hurt Nydia a bit.  Cade glanced at Nydia from the corner of his eye, and his expression changed. He murmured inside, ‘Nydia’s mindset is as good as her appetite.’  Maren acted without thinking. She focused too much on winning this competition that she failed to consider the circumstances. Cade became the CEO of Jackson Group, and his branch got the power of the family. These were enough for Zachary Jackson’s and Quincy Jackson’s families to get jealous. When Zachary and Quincy’s families had been biding their time to confront Maren, Maren eagerly threw an opportunity to them.  Men rarely intervened in the family disputes at the table, knowing that doing so could jeopardize their superficial brotherhood. Instead, women were accustomed to this battlefield.  Zachary’s wife, Melissa Jackson, spoke before Orson could react. “Maren, it seems you’re using Orson to get that house. You know Orson doesn’t like the girl from the Brooks family, but you mention her anyway. Have you ever paid attention to  Orson’s words?”  Hearing Melissa’s words, Orson shot Maren a piercing glare.  Sienna gently said, attempting to diffuse the tension, “Melissa, no need to be so harsh on Maren. She means no harm.”  Melissa felt disgusted and glared at Sienna, replying, “Oh, sure. Everyone knows you’re the best person in the family. Yet, this is none of your business.”  Maren and Melissa had been enemies for a long time. Therefore, Maren would not easily forgive Melissa after Melissa publicly embarrassed her. 

Chapter 23  Nydia was momentarily taken back, wondering how Cade had gotten there.  Bentley’s hand hung frozen mid–air before he withdrew it quietly. “Mr. Jackson, it’s been a while.” He greeted Cade with politely.  Cade and Bentley had crossed paths at an international economic summit not too long ago. Cade had been the star of the show, while Bentley merely blended into the background. Chances were, Cade didn’t even remember him.  Cade coldly ignored Bentley’s greeting, clearly not interested in small talk.  Nydia thought Cade’s dismissal of Bentley was a bit harsh. So, she took it upon herself to introduce him. “This is Bentley, Mr. Wiley’s grandson.”  “Be quiet.” Cade dismissed with a cold tone.  Speech and trying to wriggle out of Cade’s grasp, Nydia found herself tightly held; the more she struggled, the tighter his grip, as though he intended to meld her into his very being.  The smile in Bentley’s eyes gradually faded.  “I’m hungry. Make me something to eat,” Cade commanded.  “The dining table is right there. If you’re hungry, serve yourself,” Nydia shot back, her patience wearing thin.  “It’s not good,” Cade replied coolly.  Nydia couldn’t help but complain internally, ‘How is that my problem? Is this guy insane?‘  tually, Cade hauled her to the backyard kitchen.  Upon entering  he finally released her.  “Cade, what’s gotten into you? If you’re hungry, get Josephine to cook. Why bother me?” Nydia said, arms crossed and dripping with sarcasm.  Typically, Cade would have dismissed her on the spot. But tonight, he was far from his usual self.  Hearing the jealousy in her voice, Cade’s eyebrows lifted slightly, but he still coldly ordered, “I want mac and cheese.”  –  “I can’t make that!” Nydia protested loudly, glaring at him.  “Then I guess I’ll call Lance to see if you really can’t,” Cade teased, a playful edge to his threat.  Fuming, Nydia wished she could shoot daggers from her eyes at him. Cade, meanwhile, lounged on the sofa with ease.  ‘Jerk,’ Nydia cursed under her breath. 

Chapter 22  Seeing the scene, Nydia’s face went pale in a heartbeat.  Today, all of Creekheim’s high society was here, including those who had reveled in her family’s downfall. They had been itching for a chance to knock Nydia down a peg, and now, her husband, Cade, had inadvertently given them ammunition.  Glances kept coming their way, and while they held back out of respect for Orson, their disdain and mockery couldn’t be  hidden.  Nydia pinched her palm, fought back the pain, and quickly put on her best smile, standing tall. However, Orson noticed everything.  He shot Cade a cold look and sharply asked, “Why bring her?”  Cade, irked by Nydia’s apparent indifference, wanted to explain but ended up keeping silent.  Josephine, feeling Orson’s dislike, turned red and squirmed uncomfortably. She longed for Cade’s help but knew approaching him would only worsen things with Orson.  With tears in her eyes, Josephine looked at Maren for help.  Maren smiled at Orson and said, “Orson, I invited Josephine. It’s on me, not her.” She then walked over, took Josephine by the hand, and stood protectively in front of her.  “Have you lost your mind? Looking to embarrass us further?” Orson barked.  Maren, used to respect and admiration, was now publicly scolded, leaving her both angry and humiliated.  “You sure know how to change sides.” Orson sneered.  Initially, Maren had looked down on Josephine for being from a poorer background and scoffed at the idea of her joining the Jacksons. But as the Brooks family thrived in the tourism business, thanks to their ties to Cade, becoming a notable name in Creekheim, Maren’s attitude shifted.  She found herself envying Josephine, thinking how perfect it would be if she were her daughter-in–law. Wealthy, compliant, and always thoughtful. Unlike Nydia, who seemed to dismiss her words and had not provided an heir after all these years.  To Maren, Nydia was nothing more than a dead weight. She thought Orson was right about her fickleness, but she saw no issue in changing sides; it seemed like the sensible choice.  “Josephine’s father has plenty of business connections abroad that could come in handy for us. That’s why I asked her over,” Maren explained.  Orson merely grunted and walked away without another word.  Maren couldn’t contain her frustration as she snapped at Nydia. “Are you just going to stand there? Attend to the guests already. Do I need to do everything myself?” 

Chapter 21  Josephine was taken aback by how readily Nydia Sharp conceded, leaving her momentarily stunned.  Looking at the item, dull and uninteresting, Josephine thought, ‘Spend that much on this? No chance!‘ Moreover, she didn’t have the funds at the moment. True, Cade had the means, but she had already dropped over seventy thousand dollars on bags and jewelry earlier that day. Spending more would undermine her caring and kind–hearted image.  Nydia, noticing Josephine’s hesitation, sneered. “Looks like your affection is quite superficial.”  The sales associate then chimed in, “The total is 960,400 dollars, but let’s round it down to 960,000 dollars.” This amount was no small figure for Nydia.  Despite being the esteemed lady of the Jackson family and holding a key position within the Jackson Group, Nydia was bound by a prenup that Cade had her sign, limiting her to a fixed monthly salary without access to shares or dividends. Her savings were modest, but she was adamant about buying this gift for her grandfather.  Nydia handed her card to the sales associate, who, after a couple of attempts, failed to keep her smile from turning awkward.  “What’s going on?” Nydia asked.  Josephine snickered. “Not enough balance, maybe?”  The sales associate approached Nydia, discomfort written all over her face. “The balance is insufficient. Perhaps you have  another card?”  1  “Oh, Nydia, it’s better to shop within your means than to pretend,” Josephine said, barely containing her delight.  Nydia gave Josephine a frosty look and handed a few more cards to the sales associate. “Try these.”  Yet, the associate still shook her head.  Feeling embarrassed, Nydia reflected on her five years with the Jackson Group, unable to believe she couldn’t make the purchase. Her eyes instinctively sought Cade.  Cade’s snort was cold. “Living beyond your means is just shameful.”  Nydia was now embarrassed and angry, cursing herself for expecting anything from Cade  Josephine was practically ecstatic, wanting to rub it in more, but with Cade leaving, she hurried after him, both exiting together.  The sales associate, not knowing what to say, just watched Nydia.  As they left, Nydia’s smile vanished, the pain in her heart intensifying. After a moment, she turned to the associate and firmly said, “Wrap up the oil painting for me.”  *****  – JMM M  Chapter 21  luna  *UEN  76% 11:03  45 

Chapter 20  Nydia paused in her tracks, turned around after a moment, and bowed again. “Thanks, doctor. I’ve got it.”  Nydia’s brain condition was indeed a bit concerning, as this was her second injury.  The first time was after Jeremy’s accident. Desperate, Nydia sought help far and wide, only to be avoided like the plague. In her panic, she once attempted to block someone’s car and ended up getting hit, which left a gash on her head that needed over a dozen stitches.  People branded her a death–defying maniac. Back then, Nydia was ready to lay down her life to save Sharp Group. And she still was. Yet, something had changed, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on what.  Inside the VIP ward, under the dim light, Josephine lay silently on the bed, her eyes tightly closed, her face pale.  Cade was seated on a nearby couch, showing no emotion.  His phone buzzed. Picking it up, Cade saw a screenshot from Stuart, furrowed his brow, and then opened Twitter.  There, he found Nydia’s tweet, saying, [Happy 5th Anniversary, Mr. Jackson.] along with a photo of them together.  Photos of them together were rare. This one, taken sneakily by Alison last year during the company’s annual party while they chatted with a client, showed Nydia smiling brightly while Cade had a cold expression, devoid of emotion.  Despite their proximity, there was a noticeable distance between them. They looked nothing like a couple, not even friends,  more like strangers forced together.  Seeing this, Cade felt an unexplained annoyance bubbling up. He picked up the phone and dialed Stuart.  The call was answered swiftly. “Mr. Jackson.”  “Clear up all the negative news from the past few days.” Cade paused, glancing towards the bed,  “And I don’t want a repeat.” His voice was cold, loud enough for Josephine to overhear. Her fists tightened under the  blanket.  *****  Nydia spent three days at home, which alleviated her ear and headache symptoms.  In the midst of this, Alison called to update her on work and mentioned Josephine had hurriedly checked out the very next  morning as if fleeing from something.  Nydia smirked inwardly. ‘Seems Josephine

Chapter 19  Nydia thought the past five years had numbed her to pain, that losing her dignity was a small price for just staying alive. Yet now, she felt an all–too–familiar dull pain so sharp, it made her breath catch.  Her head ached, her ears rang, and her jaw felt dislocated.  Intending to touch her jaw, Nydia realized her hand was drenched.  Startled, she touched her face again, finding it soaked with tears that refused to stop.  Outside, the snowfall intensified, darkening the sky as if it threatened to collapse.  For the first time, Nydia entertained a thought that had never crossed her mind. She wanted a divorce. She wanted to leave the Jackson family. This thought, however, was quickly smothered by the crushing weight of another reality.  Resignation washed over her as she thought, ‘Sometimes, responsibility is an invisible shackle.’  The news of Nydia visiting Josephine in the hospital had spread rapidly online and began to ferment, with the PR efforts of Sharp Group slowly steering public opinion in a positive direction.  The narratives glorifying Cade and Josephine’s so–called love story diminished slightly but still loomed as a threat.  Meanwhile, the internet slowly burgeoned with praises for Nydia’s elegance, intelligence, and demeanor befitting a CEO’s wife, worthy of being Creekheim’s foremost tycoon family’s daughter–in-law  Nydia glanced at her phone for a while, then tweeted a photo with the caption, [Happy 5th Anniversary, Mr. Jackson.]  Today marked their fifth wedding anniversary. They had never celebrated it, but Nydia always remembered.  Nydia went downstairs to book herself a specialist appointment.  Due to severe bleeding from her ear and dizziness, the doctor immediately ordered a CT scan, prioritizing her for urgent  care  Nydia was calm throughout, queuing alone, undergoing the examination alone, and quietly waiting for the results.  During her wait, she observed a couple. The husband had a mild concussion and clung to his wife’s hand, unwilling to let go even as he entered the examination room, tears in his eyes, prompting laughter from the doctor and those around.  The wife chided him for his lack of courage, but her eyes betrayed deep affection.  After they went in, the woman sat next to Nydia and complained, “My husband, thirty years into marriage, hasn’t grown a bit. He needs me by his side everywhere, such a clingy soul.”  Noticing Nydia’s bloodied ear, the wife inquired with concern, “What happened to you, dear? That looks serious.”  1/2  A  2/2  Chapter 19  Nydia wiped it with a tissue and shrugged. “Hit it on a door”  The old lady glanced around before asking “Are you here by yourself? Didn’t your family come with you?”  Nydia stiffened for a moment, then with a forced smile, replied, “He is busy‘ She thought biery. Busy upstars taking care  of another woman  The wife instantly saw through Nydia’s forced cheerfulness and clucked in disapproval How busy can he be? Even if he is busy, he should come to see his sick wife. Hmph, men always have ther excuses. Simply put, he doesn’t care about you Just giving you the runaround.”  The woman rambled on, not noticing Nydia’s face turning pale. ‘Don’t mind my blurness, but such a man istit worth it. Better to divorce sooner rather than later  The woman’s words struck Nydia hard, filling her with discomfort. Just as she wondered how to escape this conversation  the doctor called her name.  Relieved, Nydia stood up, offered a grateful smile, and went in  The wife stared at Nydia’s retreating figure, feeling a sense of familiarity.  Nydia was diagnosed with external ear bleeding and a mild concussion. When asked about the cause, Nydia vaguely attributed it to an accident. Skeptical, the doctor couldn’t probe further without Nydia’s willingness to disclose the story.  With a stern face, the doctor advised, “Take good care of yourself. Avoid spicy and stimulating food, and try not to engage in strenuous activities.”  ‘Thank you, doctor, Nydia replied, taking her leave.  “You can’t let this happen again. Your brain condition isn’t like others, you’re well aware of that. The doctor reminded Nydia sternly as she departed. 

Chapter 18  Nydia gasped in shock when she realized her hand was pressing down on Josephine’s wrist, right where she had cut herself. Blood spurted, staining her hand a shocking crimson.  Before Nydia could utter a word, she was shoved forcefully to the ground, her head hitting the cabinet with a thud.  “Get a doctor, now!” Cade roared, his eyes blazing with fury, his voice cutting through the air like ice.  Josephine, through her tears, looked at him, trying to keep her voice steady, “Cade, please, don’t blame Miss Sharp.” She then collapsed into unconsciousness.  Dazed, Nydia sat on the floor, watching as the medical team rushed in and out, the minutes stretching into what felt like centuries. A ringing filled her ears as something wet trickled down. She reached up, curious about the sensation.  Suddenly, Nydia was pinned against the wall, her chin gripped tightly.  Tears welled up in Nydia’s eyes from the pain as she futilely tried to push the man’s hand away, saying in agony, “Cade, have you lost your mind?”  Cade’s face darkened, his grip tightening to the point where his veins bulged, a clear sign of rage.  “Nydia, have you no soul? Can’t you see how much pain she is in? Were you trying to kill her?” he thundered.  Cade had initially thought nothing of Nydia’s actions today; despite their insincerity, at least she was making an effort to reach out to Josephine. But he never imagined Nydia could be so heartless as to endanger Josephine’s life.  “What’s this got to do with me?” Nydia shot back, her anger rising.  “How can you say that? You’ve been making her life miserable, opposing her at every turn. You dare to deny it?” Cade’s grip tightened, his fury palpable.  Struggling for air, Nydia’s face turned red, her lips purpling as she neared suffocation.  Nydia scoffed inwardly, thinking, “He hates me enough to wish me dead. To Cade, I’m already the worst of villains. Is it any wonder he blames me for today’s events?”  “What are you laughing at?” Cade demanded.  With a bitter laugh, Nydia retorted, “Cade, we’re cut from the same cloth. You accuse me of being foolish and malicious, but aren’t you the same? Blinded by Josephine, uncaring of anyone else’s life for her sake.”  As she struggled to breathe, tears streamed down Nydia’s face, her complexion unnaturally pink, her eyes bloodshot, lips slightly parted.  Cade’s eyes darkened further, a surge of irritation rushing through him as he abruptly let go of Nydia.  Free at last, Nydia collapsed to the floor, gasping for air and coughing violently.  1/2  A  Chapter 18  76% 1:02 

Nydia wrapped one arm around Josephine and placed the other on her shoulder in a gesture that screamed sisterly affection as if they were close friends catching up.  “I’ve asked my husband to look after you for a bit. After all, you’ve done so much for the company, and we both appreciate it, don’t we, darling?” Nydia said, her voice dripping with sweetness as she playfully tossed her hair, revealing a teasing glimpse of a love bite.  Josephine’s face turned a shade paler, her forehead breaking out in sweat.  The crowd around them watched with knowing looks, some unable to hide their envy.  Cade, caught off–guard by being suddenly dragged into the performance, merely squinted his eyes and smirked without responding.  “See, that’s him all over. As expressive as a log, not a word of affection, totally boring. Not like me, always there for you.” Nydia continued, “So, let me look after you from now on, Josie. Anything you want, just let me know.”  Nydia glanced at Cade, then leaned in, whispering to Josephine with a mix of seriousness and jest. “Except my husband. That’s off–limits. Share him, and you’ll be labeled the other woman.”  Josephine’s smile couldn’t have been more rigid if it tried. She wanted to clench her fist, but Nydia didn’t let go, still smiling as Nydia called out, “Come on in.”  With that, bodyguards filled the room with fruit baskets and bouquets, quickly cluttering the spacious room.  “I thought some flowers might cheer you up, what with all the hospital’s white walls getting you down. Do you like them, Josie?” Nydia asked with care.  Josephine scanned the room, counting about one hundred and fifty bouquets in a dizzying array of colors, with yellow ones in abundance.  The sight nearly overwhelmed her.  Nydia, feigning ignorance to Josephine’s discomfort, continued brightly, “I heard you like apples, so I got some for you.” She signaled Alison. “Pick out a nice big, red one. I’ll peel it myself for Josie.”  Nydia’s constant “Josie” made Alison’s skin crawl. Yet, excitedly, she picked the best apple, grabbed a knife, and handed it to Nydia.  Alison couldn’t help but smile at Josephine’s frustrated expression. However, catching sight of the stoic figure on the sofa, she quickly hid her grin and dashed out.  Reporters swarmed Alison outside, eagerly asking, “We have all the footage. When’s it going live?”  “Just a sec,” Alison said, eyeing the scene inside.  Thanks to last night’s practice, Nydia wielded the knife like an artist with a brush, peeling the apple with effortless grace.  1/2  A  …  MMM  tuna  76% 11:02  Chapter 17  Soon, Nydia presented the peeled apple to Josephine, boasting, “Not bad, huh? Starting today, I’ll come to peel apples for you every day. Exciting, right?”  Outside, the reporters‘ cameras clicked away. 

Chapter 16  17 11:01  “Don’t put yourself down like that” Alison urged Nydia with warmth in her voice “in just a year, I’ve picked up so much. Now, here I am, spearheading projects all by myself. Can you believe it? Just a year ago, I was too nervous to string geven a simple sentence together without tripping over my words”  Nydia Sharp let out a light laugh as the memory of their first encounter flashed through her mind – Allison, cheeks flushed and eyes brimming with tears, too overwhelmed to speak  Seeing Nydia’s mood lighten, Alison breathed a sigh of relief. They had a tough battle ahead, and Alison instinctively gripped the steering wheel tighter. “You’ve got so much talent, it’s only a matter of time before the big boss sees it she optimistically remarked while Nydia quietly gazed out the window.  At St. Lawrence Hospital, a fleet of black cars, led by a Porsche, made an imposing entrance and halted department.  Nydia stepped out gracefully, her high heels clicking on the ground under the sun’s gleam  As she caught the attention of onlookers, she gracefully removed her sunglasses, greeting the waiting journalists with a modest smile that captured everyone’s heart.  Soon, everyone recognized her as the wife of Cade, the CEO of Jackson Group Curiosity piqued as Nydia, accompanied by bodyguards carrying an array of flowers and fruit baskets, proceeded into the hospital.  The intrigued crowd followed Nydia to the eighth floor.  Inside, Cade sat on a sofa, meticulously signing contracts, his noble features illuminated by sunlight streaming through the  window  Josephine was captivated by his charm, cozied up to him, ready to act playfully, when the door suddenly opened, revealing  Nydia in a striking red dress.  Their eyes met Josephine’s surprise mirrored in Cade’s narrowed gaze  Nydia, briefly taken aback by their intimacy, swiftly shifted to a warm demeanor, addressing Josephine with concern, “On  dear, you shouldn’t be up. Please, lie down before you hurt yourself again.”  Josephine stood frozen as Cade laid down his paperwork, casually crossing his legs and leaning back on the sofa, exuding  a “let’s see what you’ll do next” vibe  Nydia, undeterred, had just helped Josephine back to her bed when journalists swarmed in, cameras at the ready.  Cooperating fully, Nydia posed with Josephine, then turned to the journalists with a poised smile Once the cameras were off, Josephine’s expression turned to genuine concern. ‘I’m so sorry for being late Please don’t blame yourself. Given the company’s demands and my role as the Jackson family’s eldest daughter–in–law the pressure is immense,” she said  Chapter 16  earnestly, reminding everyone of her status and indirectly warning Josephine of her established position.  Josephine, attempting to pull away but unable to match Nydia’s grip, turned pale, the power dynamics clearly in Nydia’s  FAVOR
