“Uncle Kirk.” Standing up. Eddy took the initiative to greet Kirk.
The latter sat opposite Eddy with a face devoid of emotion. “Have a seat.”
After taking a seat, Eddy suddenly thought of something and wanted to stand up once more. However, the thought struck him as childish, so he swallowed his frustration and sat in his seat.
He only spoke after he had calmed down. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you keep it a secret? Did Grandpa know this long ago …”
The longer Eddy spoke, the less inclined he was to carry on talking. In the end, he simply glowered at Kirk and said, “You’re my uncle! How could you do this to me?”
To Eddy, Kirk was like the sun in the sky that had guided him all along. He never thought that the
rays from the sun would one day scald him and burn him alive.
Kirk simply stared back into Eddy’s eyes. Slowly and elegantly, he took out a cigar and lit it up.
“Getting married is personal. Why should I inform you about it?”
“But you married Caroline! She was my fiancée! How could you?” Eddy could say nothing more. He
felt as though Kirk had betrayed him.
“As far as I know, my wife and I were single when we got married.”
Eddy shot up from his seat. “Uncle Kirk, I know that I’ve wronged her. I ignored her feelings and
suggested such a ridiculous idea.
“But it was only because I didn’t realize that I had been in love with her since the beginning.”
He continued, “Layla had saved my life once, and it had weighed on my heart. I couldn’t just leave
her alone that time.”
“Did you think that gave you the right to hurt Caroline?” Kirk exhaled, and the smoke swirled in
the air, forming a misty veil that amplified the scorn in his eyes.
Eddy looked as if someone had just punched him in the gut. He collapsed onto the chair. “It’s all
my fault,” he muttered.
“If only I had drawn a clear line between love and gratitude, things wouldn’t have ended up like

He raised his eyes to look at Kirk. “But Uncle Kirk, you’re no different than me. You lied to her. You didn’t tell her your true identity.”
Hearing this, Kirk pressed the cigar forcefully into the ashtray. Despite the fact that he looked calm and composed, his actions gave Eddy quite a fright.
The wounds Kirk had suffered in his heart back then still stung. He wasn’t sure what would
happen in the future, but there were certain things he had to make clear.
When it came to Caroline, both Kirk and Eddy had been equally deceitful in the tricks they had
used.
A while later, Kirk broke the silence. “Do you know why I can’t reveal my identity to her?”
“Why?” asked Eddy, his heart leaping into his throat.
“You Morrisons had better reflect on yourselves,” said Kirk.
“Your grandfather insisted on letting her marry you under the guise of doing it for her own good.
While you … What did you do when she gave you unconditional love back then?”
Eddy could tell that Kirk was forcing those words out through gritted teeth.
Kirk continued, “How did you treat her? It didn’t matter whether you Morrisons treated her kindly
or not. Everything you people do is for your own good.”
He snapped, “Have you ever asked her what kind of life she wants to lead?”
Those words made Eddy freeze.
