“You should join me and Mark while you wait. Mark has got us a private booth on the second floor,” Jess told Ava. Ava realised it wasn’t so much that Jess wanted to spend time with Ava, as it was that Jess wanted to brag about her sugar daddy’s money.
“Thank you for the invite, but I will stay put and wait,” Ava said.
“Nonsense, here let me and Mark persuade you,” Jess insisted, turning around and waving at someone. Ava looked in that direction and saw a handsome man in his late fifties or early sixties walk over to them. She looked over at Ryder and slightly shook her head as their eyes met to let him know it was okay. “Mark, sugar bear, this is Ava. We used to work together. I’m trying to persuade her to join us,” Jess said. Mark looked Ava up and down with an expression that told her he liked what he saw.
“I have to agree with Jess. You should join us.” Mark’s smile reminded Ava of a documentary she had seen about starving wolves.
“That is kind of you, but I’m waiting for someone,” she told him and drained the last of her drink. As by magic, Veronic appeared on the other side of the bar.

Yea please, Ava told Veronica. “Please, order what you like. It’s on me.” Ava turned to Jess and Mark. Really, it was on Zane, but Ave didn’t think he would mind. Jess and Mark both ordered, and Veronica disappeared to get their drinks. Ava faced the two people by her side and she saw Mark still had the same wolfish grin on his face, which made her feel like a place of meat. Jess, on the other hand, seemed to have stopped pretending she liked Ava. She was now scowling at her. Probably because of the attention Mark was giving her. Jess had nothing to fear from Ava. Mark may have looked handsome, but he didn’t have a leg to stand on In comparison with Zane. The three of them small talked a little. It wasn’t easy with the music and sound from the club. Jess had given up on insisting to get Ava to join them, but Mark had doubled his efforts. He was really putting on the charm.
“I can’t believe Jess hasn’t introduced us before. I thought I knew all her beautiful friends by now,” he told Ava.
“We don’t really belong to the same circles outside work,” Jess said coldly. Ava agreed and hoped the two of them would get the hint and walk away. She knew she could call Ryder over, but that would make it into a big thing.
“I don’t know honey, It looked like Ava is quite well known here,” Mark objected.
“She probably just knows the bartender. A friend from school or something. Ava isn’t the type to go out clubbing or have fun,– Jess sald to Mark. Ava felt herself blush out of embarrassment. She hated herself for not having thicker skin. Ava saw Mark open his mouth to respond, when he froze and looked over her shoulder. A second later, Ava felt a familiar hand being placed on her back and Zane’s lips making contact with her bare shoulder.
“Sorry to keep you waiting,” he said in a low voice.
“Not at all. I have occupied myself.” Ava looked over her shoulder and gave him a smile.
“I can see that,” Zane told her, shifting his focus from her to the two people in front of her. Ava turned around and saw Mark clearly knew who Zane was. His body language had changed. Jess, on the other hand, only saw a hot man. She had
no idea who he was.
“Zane, this is Jess and Mark. I used to work with Jess,” Ava said, adding a sweet smile.
“Mr Velky, it’s an honour to meet you. I have been trying to schedule a meeting with you for some time, Mark said.
“Mr Velky?” Jess asked with big eyes.
“Really?” Zane said, sounding like he was watching paint dry, and turned his attention to Ava. He traced her arm from her shoulder down to the hand that held her drink. He bent over her shoulder and tugged a little at her hand. Ava smiled and raised the glass to his lips so he could taste her drink. “Almost as tasty as you, angel,” he told her, making Ava blush. Ava saw Mark and Jess watching them. Mark snapped out of his inactiveness and cleared his throat.
“Yes, I wanted to talk to you about a business idea, Mark said. Zane lifted his eyes to look at the older man. He straightened up and possessively placed his hand on Ava’s nape.
“Well, I rarely listen to pitches. But for a friend of a friend to my angel, I can make an exception,” he said.
