When Celeste woke up from coma, she found herself in a hospital room.
Harsh white light cast a cold glow on the sterile walls, and the scent of
disinfectant hung in the air.
She blinked her dry eyes and tried to move her weak limbs. When she
turned her head slightly, she saw Kendric sitting on a nearby sofa.
He had been silently watching her, and their gazes briefly met.
Celeste was still in a daze. She had slept nearly a day. Her soft hair cascaded
beside her on the pillow. She widened her clear eyes like a ragdoll cat.
Kendric stood up when he saw her wake, but before he could reach her
bedside, Celeste closed her beautiful eyes and turned her back to him.
It was a clear sign that she didn’t want to see him.
Kendric froze midway, his expression conveying a sense of disbelief, as if he
were thinking, “you still have the energy to be mad at me?”
Outside the ward, Mary heard the noise, promptly put aside her task and
entered the room.
As soon as she entered, she noticed her boss’s displeased expression as well
as the underlying tension in the room.
“I’ll go fetch the doctor,” she made an excuse to leave.
The doctor arrived quickly, conducted a examination, “okay, she is fine.”
Then the doctor began packing up his equipment, preparing to leave. But as
he turned around, he noticed a man looking at him with doubts.

The doctor turned back with a more serious expression, “the patient’s condition is stable. Nothing serious. Just remember to get proper nutrition,
rest well.”

After the doctor left, an eerie silence settled in the hospital room. Celeste didn’t want to lay eyes on Kendric. The assistant and others held their breath,
fearing they might piss Kendric off.
“You all get out,” finally he ordered.
In a matter of seconds, just Celeste and Kendric remained in the
room–Celeste staring out the window, while Kendric keeping his gaze on her.
“Are you mad at me?” he asked.
“No.” she really wasn’t. She just didn’t wanna see him.
Kendric’s expression softened a bit. He perched on the edge of the bed,
grabbed an orange, and began peeling it. “After your recovery, I’ll bring you to
Spain.”
Celeste turned to him, her eyes filled with confusion.
“For a trip,” he explained.
He waited for Celeste’s reaction. However, he couldn’t discern any
excitement on her face.
He frowned, “you mentioned you wanted to go there before.”
Celeste found his behaviors contradictory. What was this, a mix of the stick
and the carrot?
She really wanted to know if Kendric had taken her words yesterdays to

heart or if he had dismissed them as inconsequential.
“You know that’s ‘before‘. But I don’t wanna go there now,” she mocked.
For the first time, Kendric faced a direct rejection from Celeste. His brows
furrowed even more, “so, where would you like to go?”
“A place without you.”
The silence in the room became unnerving. The orange slipped from his
grasp and rolled onto the floor.
Kendric could see right through her thoughts, “you think if you keep
behaving tough and annoying like this, I’ll sooner or later get fed up with you,
and eventually let you go?”
Celeste didn’t hide her intention, “so, when will you get fed up with me?”
“I promise you, this will be the last time you can run away from me for so
long,” he declared.
Celeste stared at the blank wall and suddenly said, “what if I die?”
In response, Kendric slammed the door and left.
In the evening, Mary brought the dinner.
Celeste’s struggled to sit up. She was receiving an IV drip in her arm, so it’s inconvenient for her to use the fork or spoon.
“Thanks.”
Given her distant relationship with Mary, she didn’t want Mary’s help. She awkwardly held the spoon with her left hand.

Celeste took a sip of soup, and then she found Mary have no intention to leave, “is there something else you want to say?”
Mary had noticed a significant change in Celeste’s attitude. This change wasn’t limited to just Kendric. It was clear that she disliked everyone around
Kendric.
In the past, when Celeste saw her assistants, she would at least greet them
with a smile, initiate conversation, and exchange pleasantries. Today, she was
completely indifferent.
Mary had never been so indifferently treated by Celeste before. Even Mary
couldn’t bear her sudden change, let alone Kendric.
Mary used to think pretty low of Celeste. She felt like this girl was a bit too
upfront with her affections, always blabbering about love and whatnot, and she
could be quite clingy at times.
Her love was too humble, lack of ego, so that Mary dislike her much.
But now, Mary suddenly had this strange feeling that maybe they had never really understood Celeste. Perhaps, all this time, the Celeste they saw was just
the facade she wanted them to see.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to stay here. If something comes up, I’ll call the nurse,” Celesté implied her to leave.
No one had ever shooed her away like that. Mary felt a bit uncomfortable. She reminded Celeste, “Mr. Melville hasn’t had dinner yet.”
Celeste wore a confused face, “why? Is he sick too?”
Mary was caught off guard by her question and couldn’t find the right

Celeste added, “he’s got quite the picky palate,so don’t add too much sugar
or salt into his food, and remember…”
When she realized what she was saying, Celeste shut close her mouth and
stayed quiet.
Over the years, caring for Kendric had become a part of her life. Old habits
die hard.
She kind of looked down on this side of herself, all wishy–washy and hesitant. Celeste scolded herself in heart.
