Kirk had only just snapped out of his daze and started walking toward the gates. Just then, a crisp voice came from the second floor. “Eddy, what’s going on down there? Did you break something?” It was Caroline. Hastily, Eddy turned to say, “It’s nothing. Nothing happened. Don’t come down yet.” But he was too late because Caroline was already walking down the stairs with her jacket on. Seeing that nothing had happened in the courtyard, she glanced at Eddy, puzzled. “What was that sound just now? It was so loud,” she said. Eddy was confused. He followed her gaze only to find out that Kirk, who had been standing by the gates just a moment ago, was nowhere to be seen. Realization dawned on Eddy when he recalled how Caroline had reacted when he had tried to bring up  the past. A small smile hung on his lips. ‘It’s nothing at all. Nothing’s wrong. You should go upstairs and rest.” “Are you sure?” Caroline noticed the dent in the gates. “Why is the gate dented? It looks like some kind of animal did this.” “Nah. A helpless and incompetent fool did that,” said Eddy. “Hurry and head upstairs. I’ll have someone come and fix this.” “Okay then.” Taking one last glance at the gate, Caroline felt a strange feeling feeling in her as if she had seen this before. However, she couldn’t remember where she had seen it before, no matter how hard she tried to remember. Her head started throbbing when she tried to recall the past, so she quickly stopped thinking about it. After she left, Eddy walked up to the gate and glanced around. Kirk had left indeed. Scoffing, Eddy said, “Uncle Kirk can’t even see Caroline now, so how is she going to remember him?” He had just finished talking when a hand shot out from the darkness, putting him in a chokehold and suffocating him.

The corners of Eddy’s mouth tilted upward in a smile, and he gradually made his way downstairs to the car. When he reached the car, he saw the person inside. It was Kirk, just as he had expected. “Uncle Kirk!” chirped Eddy as he rapped on the car window. The window rolled down, and he saw Kirk’s bleak face staring back at him. It was obvious from the bags under Kirk’s eyes that he hadn’t rested well for a couple of days. It was Eddy’s first time seeing such a dejected and dispirited side of Kirk. For some reason, a wave of guilt washed over him. It was as if he had stolen a beloved item of Kirk’s. Kirk took a glance at him and continued downing a bottle of wine, his eyes cold. Eddy watched him gulp down a mouthful of the drink and said, “Uncle Kirk, don’t be so upset. Things have only returned to how they were supposed to be now.” He added, “Caroline’s been my fiancée since the beginning-”  He had barely finished his sentence when Kirk yanked his necktie.
