Chapter 33  They pulled Celeste over to the sofa, “so, uh…, is Mr. Melville’s fiancée  aware of this?”  Celeste took a sip of her coffee, “I guess yes. She’s no fool, after all.”  They exchanged knowing glances and one of them chimed in, “Mr.  Melville’s fiancée must be sad. Being the wife of a tycoon isn’t a walk in the  park.”  Just when their gossip was getting juicy, the sound of high heels  approaching outside the door filled the room. Next moment the door was swung  open.  In walked Mary, her gaze scanning the room before falling on Celeste. “Miss Alinsky, Mr. Melville is looking for you.”  Celeste was totally drawn into the ‘love story of Mr. Melville‘, but Mary’s interruption brought her back to reality.  She turned to Mary, “just give us one more minute. We haven’t finish  chatting.”  Other colleagues quickly sensed the tensed atmosphere as soon as they caught sight of Assistant Mary.  Mary shot them a glare. “Chatting in the tea room during work hours? Wanna get fired?”  They hurriedly jumped up from the sofa. Before leaving, they shot Celeste displeased glances.  “Miss Alinsky, Mr. Melville is waiting for you in his office. You should head  Chapter  over there now.”  Celeste took her coffee and headed to the office with a heavy heart.  Kendric had been waiting for her in the office for quite a while.  “Where were you?” he questioned as soon as she came in..  Celeste pointed downward, “downstairs.”  “Do you know I’ve been waiting for you?”  Kendric had a morning meeting, and he had been missing Celeste during the whole meeting, so he pushed it to an end soon. He hadn’t even had lunch but arranged for lunch to be brought to the office, hoping to share it with Celeste, only to find her disappeared.  Celeste was a bit puzzled. She didn’t understand why he had suddenly gotten so temperamental.  She sighed, casually placed her coffee in front of him, “it’s for you.”  Kendric’s gaze wandered from the coffee to her.  Celeste feigned innocence, “I figured you must’ve had a tough day with all those boring meetings, so I went downstairs to get you a cup of coffee.”  Her words successfully won his trust. His expression shifted from the anger he’d displayed earlier to a slight bewilderment.  Mary, who stood nearby, shot Celeste a sidelong glance. She hesitated for a while then decided to hide the truth that Celeste was actually gossiping downstairs.  Celeste’s genuine expression touched Kendric. He snorted, “this is not the  Redeemed From Caged Inve  Chapter  coffee I usually drink.”  Indeed, Kendric was accustomed to the finest of everything, from his  clothing to his meals. Even his coffee hailed from Italy. How could he possibly  drink a cup of instant coffee like the one Celeste offered?  Celeste retrieved the cup, “fine, since you don’t like it, I’ll pour it away.”  Before she could take it away, Kendric snatched it from her hand.  “Have your lunch.”  Mary brought her some dishes heavily seasoned with garlic, but Celeste  was allergic to it, and consuming it would lead to her stomach issues.  Just then Mary wheeled another serving cart, offering a much more lavish  meal. Compared to Kendric’s lunch, Celeste’s looked like animal feed.  Celeste felt quite angry to be so differently treated.  “Hey, Mary, it seems like you’re not paying much care to your boss!”  Mary quickly glanced at Kendric and stammered, “Mr. Melville, I didn’t…  Celeste grinned, “garlic is such a wonderful thing. You served it only to me,  but you forgot your boss.”  “Why would there be garlic in her food?” asked Kendric.  Mary was flustered. Her face slightly paled, and she stuttered, “I… I asked my subordinates to prepare Miss Alinsky’s meal, but I forgot to mention… her 

Chapter 32 On the day Celeste was discharged from the hospital, Kendric came to pick her up. In the car, he was constantly on the phone, clearly tied up with a hectic. workload. The trip to Autumn River Town had thrown off his work schedule for several days. Even though he was here today to

Chapter 31  Celeste pushed the door open. Upon seeing who was inside, she realized she  had been tricked.  Kendric was sitting alone in the study, lost in thought. His eyes gazed  downward. A floor lamp beside him cast a soft glow on his shoulders.  Just one glimpse was enough for Celeste to make the decision. She turned  the doorknob without hesitation, but then she realized the door was locked.  The noise caught the attention of Kendric. He was holding something in his  hand, and upon spotting Celeste, he quickly stashed it back in a drawer.  He cleared his throat. “Why are you here?”  Celeste thought herself so stupid to walk into this trap just because of food.  In the darkness, the smell of food was especially prominent. She took two steps forward, approaching the dining cart.  The lifestyle of tycoons was mere luxurious. Celeste had been offered plain food in the hospital, but here was Kendric, sitting in front of a lavish meal with a furrowed brow…  His finicky eating habits made Celeste think he should be shipped off to a  barren island to experience a survival in wilderness.  She pointed at the dining cart, “there’s food here.”  Kendric thought Celeste had come to apologize. He put on his usual high–and–mighty attitude.  But she didn’t give him a second glance, going straight for the dinning cart, leaving him looking baffled.  Celeste didn’t wanna make herself look like ‘robbing‘ food from Kendric. She put on a sincere look, “you wanna have some?”  In Kendric’s eyes, this meant she was bowing her head and offering an  apology. But he couldn’t be pacified so easily. His stern face showed no signs of  softening, “I’m not hungry.”  Celeste nodded her head, “okay, then I’ll just wheel it out.”  “Hold on!” Kendric grumbled through clenched teeth.  He was such a fool to think she was coming over to offer apologies!  Celeste was quite puzzled. “I thought you said you were not hungry?”  Kendric suppressed his annoyance, “yep, I’m not hungry, but you can’t  wheel it out.”  Celeste narrowed her eyes, and she asked herself inside her heart, ‘Why didn’t I notice before how–irritating Kendric Melville could be?”  Love had a way of blinding her to his flaws. It’s only now she truly saw him  clear.  Kendric had always been a bit overbearing.  Once, on Sienna’s birthday, Celeste and Sienna had planned to hold a party with their classmates and stay out all night. Celeste had only called the maid and hadn’t bothered to inform Kendric that she wouldn’t be coming home that night.  The next day, when she returned home, she found herself locked out of the villa. Kendric was sitting in the garden on the second floor, and looking down at her through the glass window.  Redeemed From Caged Love  He left her standing outside the gate for a whole hour before leisurely  coming down to unlock it.  Then he interrogated her, “where were you last night?”  Celeste honestly told him everything.  Kendric got ticked off and immediately laid down a rule for her, “You gotta  be back by nine at the latest every night.”  Back then, the naive Celeste thought that he was out of concerns.  Later, she realized throughout all those years, she lived under his watchful eye. Even when he was on business trips, Kendric always had someone reported every detail about her life to him.  Celeste pushed the dining cart back and stood not too far from him. “Kendric, you’re so childish.”  Kendric raised his head, and Celeste knew he was about to blow a fuse.  She casually plopped down in a nearby chair. “I know you’re pissed at me.”  He clenched his lips and stayed quiet, sending her a clear message–he’s truly pissed at her.  Celeste propped her head on her hand, “let me tell you the truth. Even if you’re angry, I won’t be offering you comforts or apologies again.”  She mustered the courage, “I said I wouldn’t love you anymore. I meant it.”  His calm façade finally cracked. Even though her words had clearly stung him, he still insisted, “I don’t believe that.”  Celeste took a deep breath. It’s not worth to argue with this self–absorbed 

Chapter 30  Celeste’s silence made Mary more uneasy and cautious, “you know, yesterday on the boat, you threw up all over Mr. Melville. Yet he held you in arms and rushed to the hospital.”  Celeste didn’t even raise her head up. Mary added, “he didn’t let go of you  the entire way.”  Anger coursed though Celeste’s veins. She had been quite hungry, and just wanna enjoy a peaceful meal. However, Mary’s words completely killed her  appetite.  She threw the spoon on plate, and it made a sharp clink.  “Excuse me, are you hearing yourself?”  “I understand you work for Kendric, so it’s natural for you to speak up for  him, but you shouldn’t twist the facts. Why would I end up hospitalized? It was  because his fucking tracking me down made me suffer and weakened my  body.”  “He made me have to take the ferry, or else I’d not have thrown up and  passed out.”  “All these things… don’t tell me you all can’t see the truth!”  Celeste’s blunt words left Mary dumbfounded. Just a moment ago, Mary still  thought of Celeste as timid kitty, but now she realized Celeste was more like at  rose with thorns.  “Miss Alinsky, you’ve got it wrong,” Mary explained. “Mr. Melville was  pager  to find you because he worried about your safety.”  Redeemned From Caged Love  ChapteNo90  Celeste sneered, “an executioner will never admit to being an executioner.”  Mary felt a simmering anger because of Celeste’s ingratitude. In the eyes of her and other assistants, Kendric was an important and respectable person, so she couldn’t bear to hear Celeste hurling ironic words at Kendric.  “I know exactly what’s on your mind.” Celeste said.  She stared straight at Mary and added, “you must be thinking of me as  ungrateful.”  “You are thinking that one day when I push Kendric’s patience to the limit,  and when he discard me, I’ll definitely regret my actions today. You can’t wait to  see me in tears.”  At this point, Mary couldn’t even maintain her fake smile.  Celeste continued, “you can just go straight to Kendric and tell him to drive  me away, and I’ll leave without a fuss. He doesn’t even need to have someone to  send me. I’ll hail a cab immediately.”  She had made things clear with Kendric yesterday. Because of Kendric’s  mocks at her, she had put away the last shred of goodwill she had for him.  Mary opened his mouth but couldn’t find any words. “Have a good rest,” she hurriedly fled from the ward.  In a villa near the hospital.  “He still hasn’t eaten?” Mary glanced upstairs with concern.  Cade shook his head, “what about the one at the hospital?”  Redeemed From Caged Li  Chapter  Mary let out a sigh, “she’s dining comfortably.”  They both let out a collective sigh.  Mary brought up her conversation with Celeste at the hospital, “do you think she is for real… or is she just playing hard to get?”  During this month of searching for Celeste, Cade had witnessed his boss’s  changing emotions firsthand.  As soon as Kendric learned that Celeste left, his initial anger gradually  turned into impatience. And later, with no clues of her trace for a long time, he  was unable to hide his growing anxiety. 

Chapter 29  When Celeste woke up from coma, she found herself in a hospital room.  Harsh white light cast a cold glow on the sterile walls, and the scent of  disinfectant hung in the air.  She blinked her dry eyes and tried to move her weak limbs. When she  turned her head slightly, she saw Kendric sitting on a nearby sofa.  He had been silently watching her, and their gazes briefly met.  Celeste was still in a daze. She had slept nearly a day. Her soft hair cascaded  beside her on the pillow. She widened her clear eyes like a ragdoll cat.  Kendric stood up when he saw her wake, but before he could reach her  bedside, Celeste closed her beautiful eyes and turned her back to him.  It was a clear sign that she didn’t want to see him.  Kendric froze midway, his expression conveying a sense of disbelief, as if he  were thinking, “you still have the energy to be mad at me?”  Outside the ward, Mary heard the noise, promptly put aside her task and  entered the room.  As soon as she entered, she noticed her boss’s displeased expression as well  as the underlying tension in the room.  “I’ll go fetch the doctor,” she made an excuse to leave.  The doctor arrived quickly, conducted a examination, “okay, she is fine.”  Then the doctor began packing up his equipment, preparing to leave. But as  he turned around, he noticed a man looking at him with doubts.  Redeemed From Caged Love  The doctor turned back with a more serious expression, “the patient’s condition is stable. Nothing serious. Just remember to get proper nutrition,  rest well.”  and  After the doctor left, an eerie silence settled in the hospital room. Celeste didn’t want to lay eyes on Kendric. The assistant and others held their breath,  fearing they might piss Kendric off.  “You all get out,” finally he ordered.  In a matter of seconds, just Celeste and Kendric remained in the  room–Celeste staring out the window, while Kendric keeping his gaze on her.  “Are you mad at me?” he asked.  “No.” she really wasn’t. She just didn’t wanna see him.  Kendric’s expression softened a bit. He perched on the edge of the bed,  grabbed an orange, and began peeling it. “After your recovery, I’ll bring you to  Spain.”  Celeste turned to him, her eyes filled with confusion.  “For a trip,” he explained.  He waited for Celeste’s reaction. However, he couldn’t discern any  excitement on her face.  He frowned, “you mentioned you wanted to go there before.”  Celeste found his behaviors contradictory. What was this, a mix of the stick  and the carrot?  She really wanted to know if Kendric had taken her words yesterdays to  Redeemed From Caged Love  229  Chapter29  heart or if he had dismissed them as inconsequential.  “You know that’s ‘before‘. But I don’t wanna go there now,” she mocked.  For the first time, Kendric faced a direct rejection from Celeste. His brows  furrowed even more, “so, where would you like to go?”  “A place without you.”  The silence in the room became unnerving. The orange slipped from his 

Chapter 28  Celeste walked towards the dock, completely caught off guard that Kendric had tracked her down here. She even started to wonder if he had bugged her phone somehow, how else could he be so sure she’d be hiding on this island?  Thankfully, his men was all still on the island, and they hadn’t discover her  yet. Taking a boat out might still be an option.  When Cade told Kendric that Celeste was on the island, he was oddly  composed.  “I already know.”  “So, what’s our move now?” Cade ventured.  Kendric shook his head, staring out at the tranquil lake. “She’s not on the  island now.”  “But they saw her there just now.”  Kendric shot him a disdainful glance. “Your men have already alerted her to  our arrival.”  Cade fell silent, realizing his boss was right.  “Go check all the boats on the lake.”  Cade quickly got the message and led his men to the dock.  On the lake, a boat was leisurely making its way toward the opposite shore.  A person was huddled in a corner of the deck.  reyes  Celeste had her eyes shut tight, breathing heavily. The blood vessels on her forehead pulsed in rhythm with her breath, and her vision was shrouded in  Hedeemed From Caged Love  220  darkness.  boat.  She clenched the railing tightly and moaned in sickness with each jolt of the  Suddenly the boat gradually slowed down, passengers were clueless about  what was happening. They gathered by the railings to take a look around.  Celeste slowly opened her eyes. She struggled to suppress down the feeling  of queasiness.  The captain stepped out from the control room, trying to keep everyone calm. “Please stay quiet and listen up!”  “We got short notice, the dock’s under temporary control. Boats are having to dock one by one, so the speed will slow down, and we’ll need to stay here for  a while.”  The tourists expressed their dissatisfaction, “what? You didn’t mention anything about the dock being controlled before we boarded.”  The captain patiently explained, “sometimes, when there are too many boats trying to dock, they temporarily control the dock. It’s like traffic on the roads. You need to regulate it when there’s congestion.”  Celeste nervously bit her lip, feeling a chill in her heart.  To avoid spoiling the tourists‘ enjoyment, the captain agreed to provide a few small lifeboats for free, allowing them to paddle around on the lake. Finally, the tourists were satisfied, and they disembarked from boat in small groups.  Soon, there was only Celeste left on the boat. She sat in her seat. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, and a breeze from the lake blew them away.  Redeemed From C  Clapteze  Amidst the surrounding commotion, the sound of leather shoes hitting on the deck became particularly distinct. Step by step, the rhythmic sounds grew  nearer.  Celeste opened her eyes and forced a helpless smile. Even if she had foreseen the outcome from the beginning, she had no regrets.  Kendric stared at her for a while. Celeste’s disheveled and distressed state  slightly torn apart his calm expression.  The simmering anger was unable to hide. He couldn’t understand why  Celeste had to leave, and made herself in such a mess.  He crouched down, trying to get closer.  He was at eye level with Celeste. He reached out and touched her  sweat–soaked cheek.  “Why didn’t you listen to me?”  Celeste avoided his eyes, and sarcastically retorted, “listen to you? Your  orders?” It’s like she wanted to tread on his pride, and she added, “why should I  listen to you?” 

Chapter 27  Cade couldn’t figure out what was going on in his boss’s head. Just  yesterday, Kendric seemed urgent to find Celeste, but today, he rented a bunch  of boats to visit… an island.  Lough Eye Town nestled on the centre of a large lake. The inhabitants here  led a straightforward but happy life, mainly depending on fishing and running  small businesses in scenic areas to make ends meet.  Because the only way to get on the island was by boat, plenty of locals made.  their living by offering boat riding.  The long–hour ferry made Celeste feel queasy. She kept vomiting for the  whole night. The innkeeper got pretty worried and persuaded her to take a boat.  ride to the county hospital early next morning.  But Celeste couldn’t leave right now. If Kendric had already tracked her  down to Autumn River Town, then here would be the safest place for her  temporarily.  The hide and seek game had been going on since the day she escaped from  Melville family. At first, Celeste thought Kendric had let go of her. After dodging  him for over a month, she was starting to feel his control tighten as she realized.  he’d tracked her down to Autumn River Town.  If he caught her, he would probably drag her back to cage her.  Honestly, most outsiders couldn’t fathom why Celeste chose to leave. And  even if a few were in the know, they’d just shake their heads in  disapproval why give upthe lap of luxury at Melville family?  Even Celeste herself sometimes pondered whether her escape, which  Redeemed From Caged Love  Chapter27  doomed to fail, had any real point at all.  But the longer she stayed away from Kendric, the more she became.  convinced that leaving him was a new start of her life. Just the idea of leave his  snobbish families was enough to satisfy her.  After a night’s rest, she felt a bit better. The next morning, she ventured out  in search of some food. Not far from her place, there was a bustling street with  auran  plenty of shops and restaurants.  Celeste picked a restaurant and walked in.  “A large latte with whole milk and a tuna sandwich, please,” she ordered.  Celeste adjusted her hat and scanned her surroundings. Everything seemed  calm, and there didn’t appear to be any threats.  A little while later, a server came over. “Your latte, Ms..”  “Waiter, take the order.”  A male voice sounded. Celeste’s every nerve tensed up like a taut string. She  mechanically turned her head to see two men standing across from her.  Two thoughts raced through her mind–run away immediately or stay put  as if nothing happened.  That two guys looked unfamiliar, and there was a chance they wouldn’t  recognize her.  The server walked toward them with a smile, “sir, what would you like to 

Chapter 26  “No!”  Hearing that, Mrs. Halliwell quickly shielded the baby in her arms and tried  to pry open his grip on the button.  Her forcible behavior hurt the baby. He cried out, and reluctantly released  his hold. Mrs. Halliwell quickly held her son in arms and backed up a few steps.  Cade also wondered if his boss had lost his mind, not even sparing a baby.  Nevertheless, he obediently fetched the scissors.  Next moment, Kendric took hold of the scissors, snipped the button off the  coat, and then… placed it on the desk.  Everyone behind him was left dumbfounded. Cade and Mary exchanged  bewildered glances.  Was their boss… a tough guy with a soft heart?  Kendric brought the suitcase upstairs. “We’ll stay over night here. And…  arrange me the same room Celeste stayed in,” he instructed.  The Halliwell couple looked at him with wide–eyed surprise, like they were  facing an unhinged guy.  Later that night, every single room in this guesthouse was lit up. Kendric  was in his room, wrestling with this suitcase, while Cade briefed him on what  he’d found so far.  “The innkeepers told me that Miss Alinsky checked out in the morning.  When she left, she mentioned she was off to Mount Canary.”  Mount Canary was quite a hike from this town, in a different city  Redeemed From Caged Love  altogether. Kendric nodded.  Cade went on, “I even checked the surveillance footage. We definitely saw  Miss Alinsky waiting for a bus to the county station at the town’s bus stop, so  she must have left this town.”  #  Kendric had been trying to crack the suitcase code the whole time, but  failed.  “Boss, should we hit the road to Mount Canary to look for her?” Cade  suggested.  Finally, Kendric gave up on the suitcase. Too many failed attempts had  temporarily locked it. He looked like he was done with any hopes of guessing  the password.  “She’s still in this town,” he was sure.  “What?” Cade showed his doubts.  “Go grab a saw and an axe.” Kendric ordered.  Cade inwardly complained about his boss’s odd behavior. Why on earth did.  he want to open that suitcase in the middle of the night? Didn’t anyone teach  him what privacy is?  As Mary brought up the tools, she noticed Kendric sitting on the balcony,  playing something through his fingers.  She gingerly offered, “Mr. Melville, maybe I can try to figure out the code.”  Kendric snapped back to reality, “you know the code?”  Mary shook her head, “not sure. But I can have a try.”  Redeemned From Caged Love  205  After that failed attempt with the password, the suitcase remained locked for half an hour. Now, finally, it was ready for another try.  Mary punched in a four–digit code. There was a slight click, and the suitcase. 

Chapter 25  At dusk, a bunch of cars drove into Autumn River Town. Folks from all  around stuck their heads out from under their roofs. These black cars slowly  cruised down the cobblestone road, leaving behind a thunderous rumble.  “What’s going on? Why are there so many out–of–town guys suddenly?”  This inconspicuous guesthouse was run by a young couple.  Mrs. Halliwell, holding her kid, peeked out the door but was spooked by the  scene and took a few steps back.  Mr. Halliwell comforted his wife, “it’s a good news for us, isn’t it? More  visitors mean better business for us.”  Mrs. Halliwell agreed with a nod. She put her child in a stroller, getting  ready to step out.  “Where are you headed?”  “I’m gonna pay a visit to mayor and find out what’s going on.”  “Remember to get back earlier. We haven’t cleaned up the room that the lady tenant checked out of this morning.”  As the sun slowly sank below the horizon, owners of several guesthouses in town gathered outside the mayor’s house. They stood in a circle under the big oak tree, chitchatting away.  “Dozens of cars! There must be around a hundred people, right?”  “Quick, quick, the mayor’s coming out.”  They rushed up, surrounding the mayor, “Mayor Brian, where are those  Redeemed From Caged Love  Chapter 25  guys gonna stay?”  The mayor explained, “they are developers on a field visit to our town.  There aren’t many hotels around, so they can’t all fit there. Some of them might  stay in guesthouses.”  “Mayor Brian, mine is got plenty of room, and it’s spick and span.”  “Mine can accommodated at least twenty people.”  Mrs. Halliwell listened in silence for a moment and then suggested, “Mayor, how about we divide these guests into equal groups and each guesthouses treat a group? Business has been slow lately for nearly all guesthouses in our town.”  Brian nodded in approval, “sounds fair. Then let the guests decide where they want to  stay.”  Everyone hustled back to their guesthouse to do the preparations.  Mr. Halliwell was tidying up the room upstairs, he found a suitcase left by the tenant with a note “temporarily deposit it here,” so he carried it downstairs.  It was pitch–black outside when the couple finally finished sprucing up. Just as they settled down to catch a breath, the wind chimes at the door jingled, and a man strolled in.  He didn’t look like a local, towering in stature with a fit build, dressed in a black coat.  Cade followed behind Kendric into the guesthouse and immediately began scanning every detail. His search only stopped when he saw a landline phone at the front desk. He took out the note that wrote the number Celeste called her  Redeemed From  Chapter25  father this morning, and then dialed it.  Within half a second, the phone on the front desk rang unexpectedly.  “Boss, right this place,” he confirmed.  Kendric followed the sound, and his stern face softened ever so slightly.  Surveying the surroundings, he strode over and took a seat across from the  guesthouse couple. He pulled out a photo, “remember this girl?”  her.”  Mrs. Halliwell couldn’t hide her surprise, “isn’t this…”  Mr. Halliwell, however, gave his wife’s hand a squeeze, “we don’t know  Mrs. Halliwell looked puzzled but stayed silent.  put the photo away, crossed his at  Kendric and stared thoughtfully at  them.
