Chapter 43  In the afternoon, Celeste took her father out for some quality time.  Back in her younger days, Celeste had thought the world outside was far more exciting than the small town she grew up. But while she was exploring the world, she forgot her father was left alone in their hometown.  Myles had never truly been on a trip in his life. Before Celeste came of age, he had been busy taking care of her. After Celeste left, he was occupied with  saving money for her.  If one day he discovered that his beloved daughter, whom he cherished so dearly, wasn’t being well treated by Melville family, he’d definitely give Kendric  a stern lesson he’d never forget.  Throughout the day, Celeste accompanied her father as they roamed various places. They tried many things that Myles hadn’t tried before.  After a full day of exploration, they stumbled upon a café and settled in.  Myles sat at an outdoor table, observing the nearby buildings.  Myles cautiously inquired, “Cely, are property prices really high here?”  Celeste nodded.  Myles retrieved a well–worn leather wallet he had brought with him. The  leather had lost its luster with age, and in some places, it was even cracked.  Myles carefully pulled out a check and placed it on the table.  “What’s this?” Celeste picked up the check, and was stunned by the  numbers written on it.  the savings I’ve been setting aside for you all these years. Originally, I  Redeemed From Caged Love  Chapter43  wanted to buy you a house here. You do like this city, don’t you? But I didn’t expect property prices to be this high here, and the money I’ve saved up isn’t nearly enough,” Myles said with a hint of regret in his voice.  Celeste stared at the numbers on the check and asked him seriously, “where  did you get all this money?”  She was well aware of the farm’s income. It wasn’t much. Her expression  Fath  became visibly grave. Her father must had been leading his life, pinching and  scraping.  “Dad, you didn’t take good care of yourself these years, right?!”  Myles chuckled, “I don’t need much money.”  Celeste shook her head, “but if it weren’t for saving all this money, you  could have had a better life.”  Myles stared at Celeste with affectionate eyes, “Cely, dad doesn’t have any  big wishes. If a person could only make one wish in their life, I’d wish for you to  have a life without hardships, with only happiness.”  Celeste firmly refused to accept it. This was such a heavy gift.  Myles didn’t push her, “well, then wait until your wedding with Kendric. I’ll  give it to you.”  Celeste almost blurted out that she had no intention of marrying Kendric. She clenched her teeth. At the very least, she needed to wait until her father safely returned home.  In the evening, Kendric called.  Celeste stared at her buzzing phone for nearly a minute before finally  Redeemed From Caged Love  picking up the call.  “Haven’t come back yet?”  Yeah, I found a speciality restaurant and took Dad to try some specialties.”  It was just her excuse to buy more time staying outside.  Kendric knew clearly what’s on her mind. He insisted, “we have chefs at  home who can cook all sorts of specialty dishes. Come back to have dinner.  Celeste gazed at the evening sky painted with orange of the setting sun. Her  thoughts seemed to wander along with the clouds. “No, the air outside is  refreshing. I’ll be back after the dinner.”  Kendric didn’t change his mind and displayed a touch of impatience. “Don’t  make me repeat myself.”  Celeste promptly ended the call. She still decided to have dinner outside.  They soon arrived at a specialty restaurant. Cade, of course, had no reason to join them at the same table. He stood just outside the glass window, keeping a  close eye on them. 

Chapter 42  This awkward meal seemed to cost a century, and when it  Kendric inquired about their plans for the afternoon.  “What’s the plan for the afternoon?” he asked.  landed.  Celeste replied with irritation, “I’m going to take my dad out for a stroll.”  Kendric called over his assistant Luke, “what’s on the agenda for the  afternoon?”  “Mr. Melville, you have no other important schedule for this afternoon.”  Kendric nodded.  Celeste had a bad feeling, “what do you mean…”  “Go back home and change your clothes, and then we will all go out  together this afternoon,” he decided.  Celeste had no desire to GO OUT WITH HIM!  She had spent the morning planning the outing, scouting for attractions and  restaurants, her heart brimming with excitement about taking her father out  for a good time. But now, her enthusiasm had been ruined by Kendric, and she  couldn’t muster the slightest interest.  She didn’t want to cause a scene with Kendric in front of her father, so she just sat silently in the car.  In Melville’s villa, Madelyn was spending her afternoon tea time with some other ladies in the courtyard.  Kendric strode past without a sideways glance. He held Celeste’s hands, so  M2  she trotted along behind him.  Kendric’s arrogant demeanor was nothing new to these ladies. But they  were astonished that Celeste didn’t greet them!  One of the ladies mocked, “Madelyn, why didn’t Kendric’s fiancée bother to  greet us?”  Madelyn raised her coffee cup and let out a forced smile. “Perhaps she  didn’t notice us.”  The ladies put on an act of surprise, “she doesn’t treat you so rudely like this at home, does she?”  One of them let out a subtle chuckle. “Seems like she’s forgotten her  manners.”  Madelyn furrowed her brows in thought. This wasn’t how Celeste used to be. She used to be respectful and well–behaved. She wouldn’t dare to disobey any of Madelyn’s orders.  Madelyn wondered what had come over Celeste lately. Every time they met, Celeste would respond with sharp words and coldness.  Mrs. Brown noticed Madelyn’s scowl.  After everyone had left, Mrs. Brown came to Madelyn specially, “Madelyn, would you like some advice on how to teach your daughter–in–law to be more respectful towards you?”  Mrs. Brown whispered, “do you remember the family tutor I told you last time, Annmarie?”  Madelyn recalled that Mrs. Brown did say she had hired a family tutor for  ChapteM2  her daughter–in–law, specializing in etiquette. Since then, her daughter–in–law  not only became well–versed in manners but also exceptionally obedient to Mrs.  Brown.  Madelyn took a sip of coffee.  For the sake of convenience, Kendric changed into a set of casual clothes.  He was tall and well–proportioned, and any outfit he wore made him pleasing to  the eye. After changing his clothes, he glanced back at Celeste, who was  wearing a deeply resentful expression.  He leisurely buttoned his shirt, “why aren’t you changing your clothes?”  Celeste took a deep breath. Despite inwardly cursing this jerk hundreds of  times over, she maintained a calm tone.  “Kendric, you should know that I don’t want to go out with you.”  Such straightforward refusal should have been clear to any normal person. However, Kendric was far from normal. In his world, he was the one who gave orders, not the one taking them. 

Chapter 41 At noon, Sienna invited Celeste and Myles for lunch. However, Kendric’s call spoiled their lunch plan. Celeste made sure she walked out of Myles‘ earshot and answered the call. Kendric’s voice over the phone remained condescending as usual, “let’s grab lunch together at noon.” Celeste blurted out, “no.” There was a brief silence

Chapter 40  Myles asked Kendric the same question, “this plant was healthy, so how did  the stem break?”  After a brief silence, Kendric admitted, “I caused it.”  Myles understood the situation. He thought that Kendric had accidentally  harmed the plant Celeste had been looking after and had sought his help to see  if it could be saved. He even considered grafting techniques. Myles was pleased  with his attitude.  His sense of goodwill toward Kendric grew, “as long as you admit your  mistake, that’s good. This plant isn’t particularly valuable. You can apologize to  Cely and buy a new one.”  “I will, thank you, Mr. Alinsky.”  Celeste stood silently behind him, quietly observing Kendric’s actions. She  sneered.  Breakfast had been prepared based on Myles‘ requests. They were all Celeste’s hometown dishes, featuring flavors heavy on spice.  Madelyn excused that she wasn’t feeling well and refused to join them for  breakfast.  Myles glanced at Celeste, wondering why she appeared indifferent to Madelyn’s illness.  Then he recalled that since coming to Melville family, apart from Kendric, he hadn’t met any other members of this family. Myles felt slightly  Redeemed From Caged Love  Chapter 40  uncomfortable for not receiving enough respect.  After finishing their breakfast, Kendric went to work as usual. Celeste  prepared to take her father to visit her studio.  When she came downstairs after changing clothes, she saw the maid  wearing gloves and holding a black garbage bag heading out of the kitchen.  Celeste stopped her, “what are you carrying in your hand?”  The maid appeared uneasy, “Madam instructed me to dispose of all the  utensils that outsiders have used.”  Celeste’s expression changed. ‘utensils that outsiders have used‘ – Madelyn  was obviously referring to her and her father!  Celeste didn’t show any signs of anger. Instead, she smiled, “tell your dear Madam that if she dares to throw away a set, I’ll buy ten sets to replace them.”  “Of course, using Melville’s money.”  Myles was eager to see Celeste’s workplace. He wanna check out if his daughter had a good life in this alien city.  Celeste had called Sienna ahead, telling that she would bring her dad to her studio. Originally, she planned to just give her father a quick tour and then take him back.  To her surprise, Sienna gave her a ‘surprise.‘ As soon as Celeste and Myles stepped out of the elevator, they were greeted by Sienna and all the staff. They were holding up a banner at the entrance that read, “Warmly Welcome Mr. Myles Alinsky!”  Redeerned From Caged Love  Chapter40  Celeste felt so embarrassed that she wished she could flee away with her  dad, but Myles seemed to be quite delighted.  Sienna also prepared a large bouquet of flowers. Her smile was even more  radiant than the flowers.  “Dad!”  This address startled Myles a bit, and Celeste playfully patted Sienna’s head,  “you’re calling whom dad?!”  “Come on, your dad is my dad, too.”  Celeste chuckled and explained to Myles, “dad, this is Sienna, my best. friend.”  Myles accepted the flowers with a big smile.  Sienna hurriedly walked over and linked her arm with Myles”. “Dad, I’ll show you around the company.”  Sienna mimicked a boss’s tone, “well, Celeste, you can go focus on your work now. Just leave us alone.”  Celeste shot her a glare, but Sienna wasn’t intimidated. She led Myles away.  Celeste spent more than half an hour in her office. Finally, Sienna returned with Myles who was obviously in his best mood. The fine lines at the corners of his eyes couldn’t hide the delight in his eyes.  Myles even had a handful of cute toys and keychains. Celeste fixed her gaze on them, “dad, what’s in your hand?”  Sienna chimed in, “I took dad to visit our exhibition hall. I mentioned that 

Chapter 39  Myles‘ slightly worn leather shoes tapped on the polished floor as he  followed quietly behind. Celeste bustled around cleaning the room, while Myles  stayed close by with a serious look.  “Dad, what’s bothering you?”  Myles lowered his voice, “Cely, you don’t share a room with Kendric?”  Celeste was momentarily at a loss for words. She didn’t know how to  explain the situation.  Her father looked deeply concerned, “is there trouble in your  relationship?”  The mix of concern and worry in her father’s eyes hit Celeste hard. He had  traveled a long way to see her, primarily to see if she was doing well. Celeste  surely didn’t wanna raise his worries.  She decided to conceal the truth of her breakup with Kendric temporarily.  She adopted a casual tone, “no, dad, our relationship is actually… quite good.”  “It’s because… I had a cold recently, and I was afraid of passing it on to  Kendric.”  Myles breathed a sigh of relief.  The wrinkles between his brows smoothed out, “Ken is a thoughtful guy. He  was worried that I would be uncomfortable to take the flight at my age, so he  even specially arranged a first–class ticket for me.”  “He’s patient with you as well, so you two may consider marriage.”  “Marriage!” Celeste turned her head abruptly, “what marriage?”  Redeemed From Caged Love  Capteris  “Didn’t he tell you that he asked me to come here to discuss your  marriage?”  If Celeste shook her head and claimed ignorance of this matter, her father  would surely become suspicious.  She absentmindedly nodded. She tightly controlled her impulses and  refrained from telling her father that she had already broken up with Kendric.  Perhaps… she should find a suitable time to have a serious conversation with  her father.  Celeste said goodnight to her father, closed the bedroom door, and headed to the adjacent room to find Kendric.  He was sitting by the window, reading some documents. Seeing Celeste striding in with fury, he took a sip of his tea.  Celeste restrained the urge to splash the tea on his face.  “You brought my father here?”  Kendric didn’t bother lifting his eyes from the document he was perusing, instead, he turned  page.  “And even using the excuse of discussing our marriage?!”  Finally, he tore his gaze from the documents. He stared at her as though trying to peer into her soul. “I’ve told you before, there’s always a way for me to keep you in line.”  Celeste was well aware that he had countless methods to control her.  He revealed a triumphant smile. “So, don’t even think about getting away from me. You’re not alone, and I have your father here.”  It was a calmly delivered threat.  Celeste was so furious that she struggled to find her words. She reached for  the tea cup in front of him.  But she never liked to throw things to vent her anger. She held the teacup, staring at him, her heart boiling like it had been drenched in scalding oil.  ***  lay.  At night, Celeste lay in bed.  Her mind was in turmoil. Kendric knew precisely where her vulnerability  She used to be compliant with him, but now she no longer followed his 

Chapter 38  Upstairs, Celeste returned to her bedroom, clutching her phone tightly.  After tonight’s incident, there was now bad blood between Kendric and Manuel. Kendric is never someone easy to deal with, and Manuel is no pushover  either.  Celeste’s head ached the thought.  Vader family had been kind to her, and it was this debt of gratitude that made her extra sensitive to their feelings. She could handle Kendric’s harassment, but the thought of Manuel getting hurt because of her left her  feeling helpless.  The phone rings snapped her out of depression. It was a call from Manuel.  “Manuel?”  “Yeah.”  She offered a heartfelt apology, “Manuel, about what happened tonight….  I’m truly sorry. I never intended for him to show up.”  Manuel soothed her, “don’t blame yourself. This isn’t your fault.”  Celeste took a seat on the floor, her head hanging low. “I won’t let any of  this affect you and your father.”  After a moment of silence, Manuel suddenly chuckled, “hey Celeste, you  don’t trust that I can handle it?”  “Melville family isn’t all–powerful, and it hasn’t been only around sixty  years since Kendric’s grandfather made their fortune. Besides, my family isn’t  one to be underestimated, either.”  Redeorned From Caged Love  Chamersd  “Manuel, it’s not that I don’t trust you.”  She trusted Vader family more than anyone else, but she just so afraid to get  them involved in this chaos.  Manuel surely understood her concerns, and he knew that his persuasion.  would only add to her psychological burden.  He dropped the topic, “if you ever decide to leave Melville family, just give  me a call, and I’ll come pick you up.”  Their support made Celeste feel the road ahead didn’t seem so bleak. “thank  you, Manuel.”  After ending the call, she felt much better than before. She headed off to  freshen up.  As soon as she walked out of the bathroom, she found Kendric was seated  on her bed, holding her phone.  Celeste raised an eyebrow. “That’s my phone,” she pointed it out.  “Hmm,” he nodded his head.  Evidently he was not giving it back to her. Celeste extended her hand, “give  me yours.”  Kendric narrowed his eyes, “you want to check my phone?”  “To make it fair, you checked mine, so I’d like to check yours as well.”  This request was something entirely new to Kendric. He handed his phone  to Celeste without any fuss.  She hadn’t expected him to agree so readily.  Redeemned From Caged Love  Chapte  Nonchalantly, she tossed his phone onto the bed and avoided making eye contact. She remembered that she had deleted all the messages and call  records.  Yet it was right her thorough clean–up of messages and calls that raised his  suspicions.  He proceeded to check Celeste’s credit card bills. Then he found there was a 

Chapter 37  Kendric’s sudden appearance sent shivers down Celeste’s spine. It was like  she’d been a marionette, thinking she had her freedom, but when she turned  around, she realized the strings were always in his hands.  She instinctively took a step back.  “Come here,” he commanded again.  Celeste shook her head, but Kendric reached out towards her, “I won’t  repeat myself.”  Celeste didn’t move a muscle. She stayed silent. Maybe she got the courage from the alcohol, or perhaps she got it from Manuel’s presence.  “No.” she said.  A slight twitch in the muscles on Kendric’s cheek and a tighter jaw were signs that he was getting angry.  In the next moment, he stepped out of the car, and his leather shoes trod on the concrete ground. He shot Celeste a cold glance.  Then he walked past her straight to Manuel.  Both men shared a similar imposing stature. Kendric’s suit was impeccably buttoned. In contrast, Manuel’s suit was casually unbuttoned, revealing a white shirt underneath, giving off a more relaxed vibe.  “You’re the one who called her here,” Kendric asked.  “Yes, so what?”  Kendric looked down upon anyone he disliked, no matter who they were.  Redeemed From Caged Love  This tendency was even more pronounced when he faced Manuel who could  potentially be seen as his romantic rival.  Kendric’s tone and choice of words turned infuriatingly provocative.  He scoffed, “Manuel Vader, son of Marshal Alexander Vader.”  Manuel put on a fake smile, “you seem to know me well, anything else.”  “You were promoted to senior prosecutor this year after cracking a major  organized crime case.”  Manuel’s expression changed subtly upon hearing his words.  Even Celeste grasped the underlying threat of Kendric’s words. A sudden fear gripped her- the fear that Vader family, or Manuel, might lose this hard–earned opportunity because of her.  Her anxiety surged, and she urgently seized Kendric’s hand, “I’ll listen to you. Let’s head back now.”  “You think Vader family can protect you?” he whispered to her ear.  Celeste shook her head, “let’s go back.  She tried her best to hide her fear. If she had known that Kendric would do harm to Vader family, she would never have agreed to attend this birthday gathering.  Kendric held her hand tightly, “I said, I won’t repeat my words.”  Celeste stiffened.  Manuel quickly regained his composure. “Mr. Melville, you’re a  businessman, well aware of the importance of knowing your adversaries.”  Chapte  “You know me well, but would you like to take a look at this customs.  declaration list I have?”  Melville family was heavily involved in import and export, dealing with  countless shipments annually. The customs procedures were intricate, and any  delays could result in their multimillion–dollar losses.  Kendric hated being threatened.  Celeste worried that things would escalate, so she quickly intervened,  “Manuel, it’s late. You should take Sienna home now.”  She stared at Manuel with pleading eyes.  Sienna was also scared by this scene. She gently tugged at her brother’s  sleeve, whispering, “Manuel, maybe we should leave now.”  Manuel remained unmoved. He turned to Celeste, “wanna come with us?”  Reason prevailed in her mind. Celeste couldn’t afford to put Vader family in  danger, even if Kendric might be bluffing. It was a risk she couldn’t take. She  shook her head, and Manuel reluctantly conceded.  Sienna had to use all her strength to pull her brother away.  Celeste stood still, not daring looking back. 

Chapter 36  Just then, Manuel walked over and plopped down next to Celeste.  Celeste gave him a quick once–over. Manuel had already ditched his suit jacket, casually draping it over the chair. Despite the chilly weather, he was rocking just a shirt with sleeves rolled up, showing off his brawny arms.  His aunt playfully quipped, “Manuel, happy birthday! Now that you turned  thirty, it’s time to consider getting married.”  Manuel chuckled, “auntie, you know me, work’s eating up all my time.”  The vibe at the table was easygoing, with everyone cracking jokes and  swapping stories about their families.  Out of the blue, Celeste’s phone started blaring, breaking the serene mood.  Hearing the ringtone, she shot a glance at the screen. In her panic, she  accidentally knocked a bowl over, spilling scalding soup onto her hand.  “Ouch!” she exclaimed in pain.  Manuel swiftly grabbed a wet napkin from the side and handed it to her.  But Celeste didn’t even spare it a glance. She plucked the ringing phone off  the table with her injured hand.  Manuel glanced at the screen and saw “Kendric” flashing on it.  Celeste checked the time. It was already past eight! Disregarding the scald,  she dashed outside to take the call.  Everyone around the table watched her hasten away, and they exchanged  puzzled glances. “Whose call could it be? Why the rush?”  Redeemed from Caged Love  Chapte  Actually Celeste wasn’t in a rush, her earlier reactions was out of instinct.  But as she stepped outside to answer the phone and the brisk wind cleared her  mind, her panic had lessened.  Her voice was even, “what’s up?”  Kendric had scrutinized the picture dozens of times. His emotions had  shifted from initial anger to a growing calmness. Only when he was sure that he no longer harbored the impulse to confine Celeste forever did he decide to call  her.  “Where are you?”  Celeste glanced at her reddened hand, “outside.”  Kendric restrained his anger, “come back.”  “Right now.”  THE  The wind brushed off her cheeks, “I’m sorry, but I can’t leave right now.  Kendric couldn’t fathom why Celeste would use “can’t leave” as an excuse to  stay in another man’s birthday party. From the moment he saw that photo, his  trust in Celeste had waned, despite her many assurances that she only loved.  him in this lifetime.  But the man in the photo was holding hands with her, their closeness.  evident.  “You better come back now, or else…”  “Or else what?” she cut him off, “you’ll come catch me again?”  “Celeste!Before I get angry…”  Redeemed From Caged Love  Chapt. 76  Celeste sounded weary, “Kendric, I have my own life too. If you’re going to get upset even when I attend a friend’s birthday party, then… I have no way.”  There was a brief silence on the other end, “I’ll come pick you up.  Surely Celeste wouldn’t allow him to come over. She gritted her teeth, “No  need!” then she hung up the phone.  Kendric clutched his phone, his expression darkening. He had ways to bring  her back, just as he had
