Chapter 18 Beg Me  The manager turned around upon hearing the accusation. He politely asked Calista, “Is what Mr.  Mitchell said true?”  The manager didn’t want to resort to checking the surveillance footage. The guests of Luminary  Lounge were typically wealthy and valued their privacy. They preferred not to be closely  examined.  “No, it’s not. That man harassed me. He even kicked my friend. If you don’t believe me, you can ask  your employees here,” Calista replied firmly.  The two waiters who stood nearby nodded in agreement. The manager understood the situation.  However, the manager was quick to judge. He had never met Calista before. He quietly assessed.  her attire, which appeared modest without any expensive jewelry.  On the other hand, he was familiar with Alexander, despite his recent downturn. The manager  handled the situation swiftly. He hoped to diffuse the tension.  “Madam, it seems your friend wasn’t seriously injured. How about we let this matter go? Of course,  the gentleman will be responsible for any medical expenses,” the manager suggested. He tried to  appease them.  Calista was well aware how complex people could be. She knew the ways of the world. One glance  at the manager told her everything she needed to know about his character.  “What if I insist on pursuing this? Will Luminary Lounge protect him?” she retorted.  “Of course not,” the manager said. “Any dispute between guests will be handled by the parties. involved. Luminary Lounge doesn’t intervene in such matters.”  He added, “However, we strictly prohibit violence within the premises. So we kindly request that  you resolve this issue outside.”  After all, they were running an entertainment establishment, not a social service center. What happened outside didn’t concern them. As long as it didn’t happen within Luminary Lounge.  “I want a copy of the surveillance footage,” Calista demanded.  The manager maintained a poker face and replied, “I’m sorry, ma’am. But our guests are valued and deserve special treatment. So there are no cameras in places other than the lobby and the  +15 BONOS  Calista knew that was a lie. Entertainment venues like Luminary Lounge often had incidents. It  seemed impossible that there were no surveillance cameras in the corridors.  Cade stood nearby. He observed the unfolding scene carefully.  He focused on Calista. She still had her back turned toward them. “Looks like your wife doesn’t  want your help,” he said while raising an eyebrow in curiosity.  Calista had noticed Lucian earlier. But she purposely avoided looking at him ever since.  She knew that the manager was trying to dismiss her, but she didn’t ask for help from her  husband. Calista knew that one word from Lucian could give them access to the surveillance  footage. It could even deal with Alexander.  “Hmph, she’s got some nerves,” Cade said.  Lucian was already annoyed. Cade’s comment only deepened his frown. “There’s no harm in  keeping silent once in a while.”  Cade narrowed his eyes as he looked at Lucian’s neck. “What’s with the marks on your neck? Who  have you been sleeping with?”  It was as if Cade had found something important. After all, many women had tried to get into  Lucian’s bed over the years. But not a single one had succeeded. 

Chapter 17 Watching Everything Unfold Coldly  +15 BONOS  Lucian glanced at Lily dismissively. “You don’t want the lead dancer position anymore?”  Lily had joined a dance troupe ranked in the top three worldwide. Everyone coveted the lead  dancer position. It was a dream come true for many.  His words silenced her. Lily understood Lucian’s firm stance.  Lucian impatiently tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. He was finding it all tiresome. “Get  out of the car.”  “Lucian, I…” Lily started to speak.  Lucian turned his head. His formidable gaze was icy cold. It was enough to freeze anyone to the  core. “Lily, you know I’ve never had much patience. Don’t make me say it twice.”  Lucian arrived at Luminary Lounge 20 minutes later. He saw several waiters and live performers  headed to the private room where Calista was.  He caught a glimpse of her face through the half–open door. Her face flushed and looked  enchanting due to the alcohol.  Inside the room, Yara nudged Calista. “What are you staring at? You’re so lost in thought that  don’t even respond.”  Calista felt dizzy and shook her head. “I thought I saw Lucian…”  “What?” Yara didn’t believe it and looked at the door. It was empty, with no one in sight.  you  “I think you’re just seeing things after drinking too much. Lucian couldn’t be on this floor even if  he’s here.”  Yara then pointed upwards. “Those young scions and wealthy businessmen are up there. They  were all looking down on everyone!”  Calista thought she must have been mistaken and withdrew her eyes. She looked at the row of  various men before her. “Did you call them here?”  Yes I called the live performers. We might as well have them entertain us since they’re already  here, Yara explained.  +15 BONOS  Yara had arranged for live performers to celebrate Calista’s return to singlehood earlier in the  morning. However, the divorce didn’t happen. So, her plans to make Calista flirt with the men  didn’t quite work out as expected.  Calista wasn’t thrilled about the atmosphere. She wasn’t fond of drinking, either. However, Yara  insisted that they couldn’t return the drinks once ordered. So, she reluctantly drank two beers.  After a few drinks, they both got a bit tipsy. Although they weren’t passed out drunk, they were  stumbling as they walked. As they made their way to the elevator, two men offered support.  There was one on each side.  Calista accidentally bumped into someone. She had bumped into a middle–aged man in his 40s.  He was short and fat, with a beer belly.  The man narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. “Well, well, isn’t this Ms. Everhart?” he said. “I’m  Alexander from Horizon Enterprises. We met at Northwood Corporation. Do you remember?”  Alexander had faced a setback in his company. So he asked for help to get in contact with Lucian.  He had a chance encounter with Calista. Since then, he couldn’t forget her. 

Chapter 16 Marry Me  Selena was taken aback.  +15 BONOS  “You didn’t? Then, what about the red mark on your neck?” Selena’s eyes widened. “Are you back  with that woman, Lily? Did she leave that mark on you?  “You’re intentionally trying to anger me, aren’t you? Let’s be clear. I’ll never accept you being with  her. Whether it’s in the past or now!”  Selena would have thrown another pillow if there was more on the bed.  Lucian instinctively touched his neck. “You’ve got it all wrong.”  He didn’t explain himself further. Instead, he headed to the bathroom while frowning.  Meanwhile, Calista left the hospital under the scorching sun.  Yara had messaged her. She invited her to dinner later that night, and Calista agreed to go.  It was still early, and she didn’t need to go to the studio. So, Calista decided to visit the  supermarket and buy some essential items.  Yara drove over to pick Calista up after finishing her work. “I closed a big deal today. Let me take  you to a nice place to celebrate your escape from that impotent man, Lucian!”  Calista playfully said, “Your dad might hit you if he heard you say that.”  After all, Lucian was an influential man. He controlled a significant part of the economy in  Capeton and was well–known in the business world. Nobody dared to offend him. The antique shop and even the Quinn Corporation might be in jeopardy if Lucian overheard Yara.  “I’m just speaking my mind in front of you. Don’t you know me well enough?” Yara retorted.  Soon, they arrived at their destination.  Calista looked at the dazzling lights of the upscale club before her. She found the decorations  around her amusing. This is what you meant by a nice place to eat??  Luminary Lounge was Capeton’s most prestigious club. It offered various extravagant menus, but  its food was famous for its bland taste. Nevertheless, people didn’t come here solely for food,  +15 BONOS  “Isn’t a four–figure bill good enough? Tonight, we celebrate in style. We won’t leave until we have  enough!  “I’ve always disapproved of your boring lifestyle. It’s shocking how you endured it for three years.  Lucian used to come here often. Now, it’s our turn to enjoy it!” Yara declared.  Calista had been living a simple life during her marriage. Her focus was solely on work and home.  She left behind her carefree and wilful self before the wedding.  Yara noticed Calista’s lackluster mood as the waiter led them to their table. She thought Calista  might be feeling sad about the divorce. “You can cry your heart out later if you’re upset. There’s no  one else here tonight. I won’t make fun of you.”  Calista didn’t want to cry. The truth was, nothing had gone as planned today. She felt really down  because she hadn’t gone through with the divorce. On top of that, Selena’s situation kept her  preoccupied.  Calista muttered, “We didn’t get divorced.”  The noise in the club made it hard for Yara to hear clearly. “What?”  “Lucian and I didn’t go through with the divorce today.”  Yara fell silent instantly after hearing that. After a while, she asked uncertainly, “Do you not want  to divorce?”  Yara could see the feelings Calista had for Lucian. Even though he was distant, Lucian never deprived Calista materially. He was the one who pulled her out when she was at her lowest point.  Women, being more emotional by nature, tended to develop feelings for men who play the hero and come to their rescue. Not to mention they were married for three years.  Calista remained silent for a long time. It wasn’t that she didn’t want a divorce. In fact, she was determined to end the marriage. However, the events that happened today were not easy to  explain  Yara kept on talking, thinking she had a solution. “Just find an excuse to stay married if you don’t want a divorce! Or tell your mother–in–law and hold him back. She likes you a lot. She’d surely take care of Lucian if she knew what he had done!”  Cahista couldn’t help but laugh at Yara’s wild ideas. She wondered what else Yara would say. 

Chapter 15 Paternity Test  Calista was startled by him yelling through the phone. She froze, not knowing how to respond.  She glanced at Selena, who was also staring back at her. Then, she turned and left the ward.  “What are you talking about?” she asked. When did she ever joke with him?  Lucian’s deep and harsh voice sounded from the other end of the line. “Where are you now?”  “The hospital-”  “Even if you’re making up an excuse, come up with something more convincing,” Lucian snapped.  “Weren’t you so eager to get divorced? It’s only been one night, yet you’re so sick you can’t get out  of bed? Or maybe you’re just making a fuss to get my attention?”  Calista didn’t even get to tell him that Selena was at the hospital when he cut her off. She knew  his impression of her had never been good, but she never thought it was much worse.  He accused her right away without even having the patience to let her finish talking, let alone  listen to her.  She took a deep breath and tried to suppress the sadness threatening to overcome her. “It’s not  Lucian fell silent.  “You didn’t know, right?” Calista started mocking him. “Even when your mom’s sick, the staff only call me instead of you. Do you realize just how often I have to rush here and there to take care of  your mom all these years?”  Once, when Macy called her to tell her that Selena was in shock, Calista was at work. To make matters worse, Lucian was trying to make her life difficult.  To please him, the HR Department deliberately caused her trouble. They rejected her request for a leave, Selena’s situation was urgent at that time. So, Calista skipped work for her.  After that, Lucian lashed out at her with everyone watching. He didn’t even ask her what had  happened  If you can’t do your work, just go home and continue being the pampered little miss you are There’s no place for trash in Northwood Corporation!  +15 BONOS  Those were his exact words.  Calista was a fool for not defending herself just to avoid embarrassing him back then.  She remembered that day vividly. She couldn’t forget the faces of her colleagues staring at her  disdainfully and ridiculing her.  It was as if time had stopped. After quite a while, Lucian finally spoke. “Call me if something like  tus happens again” 2  Calista didn’t realize that he was trying to speak nicely to her. Even if she did, she wouldn’t put  much thought into it. After all, she had been overthinking things way too much in the past.  She hung up without giving him a reply. Afraid Selena might realize something was off, Calista  paced in the corridor. She needed to calm herself down before entering the ward again.  Soon, Lucian arrived.  Calista glanced at Selena, who was now sleeping on the bed. When Selena fell sick, she always  looked so pale and frail. It was as if half of her soul was sucked away somehow.  “Let’s talk,” Calista said to him.  Lucian scowled, thinking she wanted to talk to him about the divorce. “We can talk about it later.  Mom’s sick. I don’t have the time to deal with you.”  Even now, he still thought she was trying to cause him trouble. Calista started to retort, but she  noticed a red mark on his neck. And its position was  She sneered How shameless of him! They weren’t divorced yet. But he didn’t even try to hide that.  he was making out with another woman.  Then I’ll say it right here,” she said.  Lucian glared at her and walked out of the ward.  In the corridor, Calista put her hands in her pockets and stared at the whitewashed walls of the  building cross from her. “The doctor wants Mom to get a check–up.  Lucian frowned “Why?”  Im tiot wire Fut he did say that we’ll know once the report comes out 

Chapter 14 Is This a Joke?  It never crossed Calista’s mind that Lucian would suddenly agree to their divorce. She should be  happy about at right?  She smiled tuumphantly. “Thank you for granting my wish” She turned and left the gloomy place.  When she got home, she prepared all the documents that were required. Then, she put them into  her bag.  She froze for a moment as she looked at the photo of them. It was taken on the day they registered  their marriage.  They were married for three years. Yet, this was the only photo of them together. Calista stared at  the expressionless man in the photo and felt her heart break a little inside.  Thank goodness this exhausting marriage was coming to an end.  No more waiting in the empty living room every night, staring at the clock and guessing if Lucian  would come home. Her heart would also stop racing at his slightest touch. She would finally stop  thinking that he actually had feelings for her.  She took a final glance at the photo. Then, she shoved it into the depths of her bag with her other  belongings.  Calista woke up early the next morning. She couldn’t sleep well last night. She had been drifting  in and out of sleep till sunrise.  She stood before the sink and looked at the mirror in front of her. Her pale and tired reflection  stared back at her.  Anyone could see the obvious bag under her eyes. In order to appear more lively and less miserable, she purposely put on heavier makeup.  She left home early as she was afraid of the traffic. But her journey was smooth sailing. Even most of the traffic lights were green on her way to City Hall.  When she checked her watch, she realized she had reached her destination an hour before nine.  Perhaps even God thought their divorce was for the best. So, He made her journey there smoother.  It was midsummer, so the sun was already scorching hot at eight in the morning. Calista looked  As she waited for time to pass she received a message from Vara  “Cathie, do you want me to accompany you?” her text read  Calista smiled and texted back. “No need It’s a divorce, not a hight Lean settle it alone.  Right after her message was sent, she got a call from Northwood Hesidence The only person who’d call her using this number was Macy, and she usually talked about Selena  Calista knitted her brow She didn’t feel like answering the call. She was this close to getting divorced, so she didn’t want something to suddenly come up and spoil hes plan  During her hesitation, the call ended on its own. She sighed in relief. However, it didn’t take long. for Macy to call her again  Calista’s frown deepened. What exactly was so urgent that Macy had to call her again? A chill ran down her spine when she realized something bad might’ve happened.  There was no time to overthink. Calista answered the call “Macy, what is it?”  “Madam Calista, Madam Selena passed out when she was having breakfast. Please come over to  the hospital. The doctor says that we need a relative to sign the papers!” Macy sounded so anxious.  that she was on the verge of tears.  Calista’s expression instantly shifted. She ran down the sidewalk to hail a cab “Okay. Don’t worry.  I’m coming!” she replied.  Half an hour later, the cab stopped in front of the hospital. Calista went through the dozens of  hallways Finally, she arrived at the emergency department.  Macy saw her and rushed over to her. She was holding Selena’s shawl. “Madam Selena fell asleep  while soaking in the bath last night. She caught a cold because of that and had a fever this  morning.”  Selena’s health had been fragile after giving birth to Lucian. She fell ill very easily and suddenly  all the time. Her life could hang by a thread even if she was down with just a fever.  Holding her breath, Calista wiped the sweat off her face. “Have you told Lucian?” she asked  Macy shook her head. It was as Calista expected.  Lucian was always occupied with work. He was bound to the constraints of the office. That was  +15 BONOS  But the were getting diorced soon. So whatever issue Macy faced she’d have to call Lucian instood of Cast the cre
