Chapter 493  “Caroline,” came Sonia’s voice. She had come back with some food.  “I made it a bit bland, so I’m not sure if you’ll find it okay.”  Caroline had a few mouthfuls and praised, “It’s very good.”  “Really?” Sonia was overjoyed, her face lighting up.  “If you like it, there’s more.”  Caroline looked at Sonia without saying anything.  Sonia found this weird and asked in curiosity, “What is it, Caroline?”  Caroline asked her something back. “Do you remember the promise I made you?”  Sonia thought back on it for a little while before saying hesitantly, “Are you talking about when you said you would help me become an internationally famous actress?”  “Yes.” Caroline straightened.  She looked at Sonia and said, “Ms. Weiss is an internationally famous playwright. Her coming to Easton to find an actress for ‘Daughter of the Sea‘ is a good opportunity for you.”  “But…”  Caroline waved her hand. “I’m sure you know that Daphne isn’t suited to this role. She doesn’t have the experience of being in theater.  “Unless Ms. Weiss doesn’t care about this script, she wouldn’t be silly enough to let Daphne be the leading female.”  She continued, “I’ve also looked it up. You were in theater, and your life experiences are very  similar to this character’s.  “I believe acting will come naturally to you when you have the same emotional journey. Your only  issue is Sarcozian. How’s your aptitude in the language?”  “I can communicate if necessary …” Sonia was forced to go along with Caroline.  “That won’t do.” Since they were talking about work, Caroline immediately became stern and  1/2  +15 BONUS  As she spoke, she clicked on a web browser and started a search. “Marietta will arrive in just one week. Memorize the script. You must be able to say the lines in Sarcozian. Will that be a problem?”  Hearing Caroline’s words, Sonia became invigorated. “No problem!”  “Good, then you better be off. Let me talk to your manager about the rest of it.”  “Alright, Caroline.”  Caroline watched as Sonia left excitedly. However, her own expression became twisted.  She had to admit that she wasn’t only helping Sonia get this role for the latter’s sake. She was doing this mostly for herself.  Daphne was Kirk’s woman, and Kirk was Eddy’s second uncle. Why could the Morrison family mess with everyone so thoroughly?  ”  Was everyone expected to go along with it just because Daphne wanted the leading role of Daughter of the Sea“? What did the Morrisons think of the rest of the world? Were they just a bunch of nobodies?  No! Caroline wanted to show Eddy […]

Chapter 492  “Did Marietta really write this?” Caroline asked.  “It doesn’t seem to be her style.”  Marietta’s works were known for their sharp satire and harsh criticism. In contrast, this book was warm and tender. It was completely unlike her usual work.  “Yes. Plus, she’s coming to Easton to find a leading female. But …”  At that point, Caroline could see the deep disappointment in Sonia’s eyes, no matter how hard the latter tried to hide it.  “I think there’s no need for an audition. Once she gets here, everything will be set in stone.”  Caroline sat up from bed. She hadn’t eaten anything all day, so she felt unsteady.  But now that she had finished some work and managed to distract herself, the burning rage within her had simmered a bit lower.  She forced herself to focus all of her attention on Sonia. “Why is that?” she asked.  “Because… Because it’s been rigged.”  When she saw Caroline sit up, she said, “Caroline, you must be hungry. I’ll cook you something to eat.”  But Caroline stopped her. “Don’t worry about that. Who’s getting the role?”  “Daphne Dawson.”  At that answer, Caroline’s face became visibly paler. Just as Sonia was about to ask her what was  wrong, Caroline pushed past her and rushed into the bathroom.  Inside, Caroline couldn’t hold back the waves of nausea and started puking. Since she hadn’t eaten  all day, nothing came out. Yet, her stomach kept churning.  After she vomited for a while, the feeling of nausea finally subsided.  Holding onto the toilet bowl, Caroline looked up to find Sonia looking at her worriedly. She forced  herself to comfort Sonia, saying, “I’m fine.”  1/2  Sonia was concerned. “Caroline, I think you…  Caroline got up by supporting herself on the toilet. Her legs went weak, and she nearly slipped.  Luckily, Scia reacted quickly enough to catch her.  “Caroline.”  Caroline gave her a pained smile. “I’m hungry.”  Finally, Sonia felt somewhat at ease after hearing that. She helped Caroline back to the bed and sat her down. “I’ll cook you something.”  Caroline nodded shallowly. Once Sonia left, she took out her phone. Holding back the nausea, she typed in Daphne’s name.  The first result was still the news about Daphne being Eddy’s second uncle’s wife.  She frowned. Ignoring the buzzing in her head, Caroline kept scrolling through the news.  Soon, she found in the latest news an article that mentioned both Daphne and “Daughter of the Sea  The article mostly talked about how Daphne was the best choice to be the star of the show.  Caroline clicked on Twitter. There, both “Daughter of the Sea” and Daphne were already trending.  The posts involved were mostly praise.  “So I’m not the only one who thinks Daphne Dawson would be the best choice to be the female  lead of ‘Daughter of the Sea“!”  “Daph can really do it. For those who don’t know, Daph is amazing at Sarcozian and has learned  martial arts. She’s a perfect match for the character!”  “I don’t know much about Daphne, but after reading about her, I really think she fits the vibe for  the main character of ‘Daughter of the Sea‘. 

Chapter 491  +15 BONUS  When it was almost afternoon, Caroline’s expression finally eased a little. However, she still didn’t have much of an appetite and refused to eat anything.  Sonia was really afraid that Caroline would lose herself if she went on like this.  However, when she saw that Caroline could still answer a call from Cheryl and give clear and logical suggestions, Sonia knew that she was someone who would never be defeated.  Besides, when she worked, Caroline was like a whole other person. She was driven and energetic.  No one could even tell that her heart was in agony.  Yet, once Caroline put down her phone, it was like all the energy had been drained from her. She collapsed into bed weakly.  Seeing this, Sonia suddenly got an idea. She took out her script and showed it to Caroline.  As expected, Caroline transformed into another person when she held the script. She concentrated on it wholeheartedly, immersing herself in the world within the script.  Sonia didn’t disturb Caroline when she saw her so focused. Instead, she snuck into the living room to send her manager a message.  Helena called immediately. “Thank God you finally texted me back.  “Where are you now? Hurry back to the company.”  “Is something going on?”  “The company is planning to let you take on a new script. They want you to film a similar show so  you can ride the wave of success from the webseries.”  Sonia frowned. “Helena, didn’t I tell you before? I won’t film anything that’s similar to something  I’ve acted in before. It will limit the kind of characters I get to play.”  Helena replied, “Sonia, I know what you’re thinking. You want to secure the lead female role for  Marietta Weiss‘ play, ‘Daughter of the Sea‘. But I’m telling you now to give up on it.”  “Why?” Sonia felt very displeased to have her capabilities ignored.  “I used to be in theater. I can handle being in a play.”  1/3  +15 BONUS  “Sonia, I’m your manager. How could I not know that you used to be in theater? But I just got the news,” Helena said a little impatiently.  “Daphne Dawson is interested in this role.”  “How … could she be interested in this role?” Sonia was perplexed.  Daphne had always been in TV shows and wasn’t suited to act in a play. If she acted in one, the character would be ruined by her performance.  At the thought of such a well–rounded character being ruined, Sonia felt her heart ache.  Helena answered, “How else? Although she managed to push all the blame on the Evanson Corporation’s boss after her stint as their ambassador, people still found out she couldn’t act.  “Lots of people are unhappy with her. Plus, she’s the wife of Mr. Eddy’s second uncle. No one will be pleased if she doesn’t have something to her name.  “That’s why I think she wants to get the leading role in Marietta Weiss‘ ‘Daughter of the Sea‘. This way, she’ll have proof that Ms. Weiss acknowledges her talents.  “Her husband invested in this play, so the role is hers without question. There’s no reason to try, Sonia. It’s a waste of time.”  Sonia was happy when she ended the phone call. Upset, she went back to the bedroom. 

Chapter 490 +15 BONUS  “Why don’t you eat this?” Sonia placed the plate of pasta on the bedside table. Caroline shook her head, to which Sonia said, “You can’t refuse this. Your body is a precious gift from God. You must eat, even if the world falls apart.” Then, Caroline turned to look at her with dull and spiritless eyes. Her lips parted, but no words came out. Sonia knelt on the carpeted floor and glanced up at Caroline. “Can you tell me what happened?” The corners of Caroline’s lips twitched, but her attempt at a smile failed. Sonia gripped her hands and said, “It’s okay. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, and you don’t have to eat this if you don’t feel like it. I’ll stay here with you. Just tell me what you want, alright?” Eventually, Caroline nodded. Feeling much relieved, Sonia stood up and walked to the side of the bed to draw the curtains. The darkness was rather welcoming, and it gave Caroline a sense of security. She curled up in her blankets and closed her eyes, letting her tears flow. Sonia watched from the side. She suddenly remembered how Kirk had sped all the way here, and she took out her phone to message him. “Caroline’s let me into the room. Don’t worry. -Sonia” After that, she pondered for a moment before sending him another message. “I don’t know what happened between you two, but Caroline once told me that you’re having an affair with another woman. I think she’s become like this because of it. “I haven’t known you two for long, but I can see that you truly like her. Since you like her so much, can’t you settle things with the other woman? “I know that I shouldn’t meddle in your business, but Caroline helped me before this, so I don’t want to see her suffer.” Kirk read the message line by line, his gaze as cold as ice. It was as though a blade had stabbed right through his heart when he reached the words “Caroline” and “suffer“. He punched the steering wheel hard. Somehow, the thing that hurt wasn’t his hand but his heart. 1/2 +15 BONUS A shadow fell across his face as he dialed Charles‘ number. “I’m giving you a week to find out who that mysterious person and Dolly are! This is your final chance!” Despite the distance between them, Charles could feel the murderous edge in Kirk’s voice. He straightened his back and said, “Sir-” “Five days!” Charles inhaled sharply. He hadn’t even said anything! “Three!” “Five days it is!” Charles said. “Don’t worry. I’ll give you every bit of information about them in five days!” He hung up before Kirk could end the call and realized how he had broken out in a cold sweat during the call. Charles wore a stern expression as he walked into the computer lab. With one hand raised in the air, he said, “Everybody, freeze.” Everyone in the room looked at him. Noticing the serious look on his face, they didn’t dare to utter a single word. Charles then said, “Find out who Dolly and that mysterious person are. You have four days‘ time.” Everyone held their breath. They were in so much distress that they didn’t have any energy to even wail at the news. Charles started to leave when he was finished talking, and the person in charge rushed after him. “‘ Charles, hold on.” Charles stopped and waited for the barrage of questions that was bound to follow. “Can I ask you something? About the deal related to Dolly and that mysterious person… How many zeros are involved in it? Why do we have to look into this matter so urgently? “We’ve been on it for a long time, and we’ve spent way too many resources already.” He added, “If this continues, it could only mean that this deal is worth hundreds of billions.” In answer to these, Charles simply stared at the man and said, “To Mr. Morrison, it’s priceless.” 

Chapter 489  When Sonia arrived at Caroline’s floor, she realized that Kirk was responsible for the loud bang she had just heard. He had kicked open the door to Caroline’s apartment.  Sonia stared with wide eyes as Kirk walked in the direction of the bedroom. He raised his hand to knock at the door and said, “Darling!”  His tone was very different from what she had heard all this time. It was soft, and his voice was gentle.  Just then, she heard Caroline roar from the other side of the door. “Get lost! I don’t want to see you!”  Sonia was stunned at her words. She didn’t know what had happened between Kirk and Caroline. They had seemed to be on good terms just now. So what had happened?  Sonia then turned to look at Kirk, who rested his forehead against the bedroom door.  He was as patient as he could be as he tried talking to Caroline. “What happened? Can you please tell me what happened?”  However, no sound came from the bedroom. Kirk was about to use brute force to kick down the door when Sonia rushed forward to stop him.  “Do you really think Caroline would talk to you if you barged into her room like this? You would only make things worse.”  Although she and Caroline had met each other recently, her instincts told her that Kirk was the last person Caroline wanted to see right now. Caroline would feel even more annoyed if he forced his way into her room.  Kirk’s heart beat wildly in his chest as he stared at Sonia.  Seeing his bloodshot eyes, she felt her heart leap into her throat. Still, she pushed away her fear.  “I know you’re anxious, but some things just can’t be rushed. I’m sure you don’t want to make  things worse between you two.”  Her last sentence made him calm down a bit, and he asked gruffly, “What should I do then?”  “Return to the hospital. I’ll take care of Caroline for now, and I’ll update you about her condition  later on, alright?”  1/3  +15 BONUS  The scowl on Kirk’s gloomy face deepened as he stared at the bedroom door. Eventually, he nodded his head, albeit unwillingly.  He and Sonia exchanged numbers before she saw him off. She then closed the door of Caroline’s apartment and headed in.  On her way to the bedroom, she noticed that the kitchen was in a mess. She briefly raised her eyes to look at the bedroom door before turning into the kitchen to tidy up the mess.  After preparing some pasta, she knocked on the bedroom door and said, “Caroline, it’s Sonia here. Kirk’s gone. Can you open the door now?”  Caroline stiffened when she heard Sonia’s voice. Her grip on the blankets tightened as she stared at the bedroom door.  She had felt like her entire world had collapsed when she had found out that Daphne was Kirk’s wife.  Initially, she had told herself that maybe Daphne and the woman Kirk was married to shared the  same name.  However, the delusion had shattered when she saw the picture. She recognized that face. There was no doubt that it was Daphne!  However, Daphne was Eddy’s second uncle’s wife. How was she married to Kirk, then? Unless ..  Caroline looked up at the ceiling as a thought struck her. Kirk was Eddy’s second uncle!  If that was the case…  She cracked a bitter smile as she thought of how pathetic her life had been all along.  First, she had been cheated on by the cousin, and now the second uncle had fooled her.  “Caroline?” Sonia said. 

Chapter 488  Sonia glanced at Kirk’s phone’s screen. His wallpaper was Caroline.  She couldn’t help but sigh. So this was what it meant when people said that it was impossible to hide it when you love someone. Every little detail of what you do would reflect your love for the person.  “Why are you staring at your phone all the time? Is something wrong?”  Kirk straightened his back and told her, “It’s been almost an hour.”  “So?”  “She would usually be back by now.”  Sonia followed his gaze to look at the room’s door and abruptly understood what he meant by that. She laughed. “You’re too clingy! Caroline’s only gone for an hour.”  Kirk then stared at her coolly. She lowered her eyes to stare at her phone in an attempt to avoid his gaze. She cleared her throat and said, “It’s been quite a while. Let me call her for you.”  Kirk pursed his lips and said nothing, but from the vague smile on his lips, Sonia knew that he was in a better mood now.  He was truly a pretentious fellow. He wanted to know Caroline’s whereabouts but made it so that Sonia would be the one to make the call.  With her phone in hand, Sonia walked toward the windows to call Caroline.  Strangely, though, her call went unanswered. Frowning, she called Caroline a second time, but the same thing happened again.  Her frown deepened as she started to worry.  Just then, she heard Kirk’s anxious voice from behind her. “What’s wrong?”  She told him frankly that Caroline didn’t answer her phone. Next, Kirk picked up his phone to call Caroline, but the line was immediately cut off.  When he called her again, the call didn’t go through anymore.  He got off the bed, slipped into his shoes, and walked out of the room, with Sonia following closely  1/3  +15 BONUS  Instead of replying, Kirk simply carried on walking. His lips were pursed, and his expression was as gloomy as an overcast sky.  Hastily, Sonia put on her mask and sunglasses, then followed him downstairs.  She watched him hail a cab and drag the driver out of the vehicle. Appalled, the driver was about to say something to retaliate when Sonia quickly forced a bank card into his hands.  “Sorry for the trouble. Here’s a hundred thousand dollars. The PIN number is six eights,” she told him apologetically.  “Lend me your car. I’ll return it to you-”  She hadn’t even managed to finish her sentence when Kirk revved the engine. So she hurriedly got into the car. In the blink of an eye, the car was nowhere to be seen.  It had all happened so quickly that the driver didn’t have time to react.  A wave of devastation washed over him as he stared at the bank card in his hands. That wasn’t his car! It belonged to the company he worked for!  Sonia regretted getting into the car. Kirk was driving so recklessly that she thought they would both meet their ends on the road. It was as though he was in a race.  She clutched at the back of the seat so that she wouldn’t fly through the windscreen.  “Kirk! You’re going too fast!” Although she had gone through the hardship of practicing

Chapter 487 Caroline left, leaving Sonia and Kirk alone in the room. An awkward silence hung in the air as they both kept quiet.  Sonia sat by the bed and stared at Kirk, who was resting with his eyes closed. She heaved a sigh of relief. To be honest, he was pretty good–looking, yet especially hard to get along with. His dominating air was too much to handle, and he always gave others a sense of sternness and rigidity. She wondered how Caroline had been able to bear with him for such a long time. Sonia tapped her nose and took out her phone to read her script, ignoring Kirk. It didn’t seem like he was going to strike up a conversation with her anyway. She had received the script just yesterday. It was the work of an infamous playwright called Marietta Weiss. Marietta had come to Easton this time in search of an actress for the female protagonist in her latest work, “Daughter of the Sea“. It told the story of an Eastonian woman who had found her true love after traveling abroad. This character was a pretty lady who had learned to fight in the past and showed strength of character. One of the producers thought that Sonia was a good fit for the role and had handed her the script. Her recent popularity had probably contributed to it too. She had fallen in love with the story when she first set eyes on it. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the female protagonist in “Daughter of the Sea” was tailor–made for her. Both Sonia and the female protagonist were orphans who had learned how to fight for self- defense. Both of them worked hard in the city, too. The only difference was that the character in the story met her true love abroad, whereas Sonia met Caroline, who had given her a chance to shine in the entertainment field. The many similarities between Sonia and the character made her even more determined to take up the role. She was well aware that lots of actresses were after the role as well. It was Marietta Weiss‘ work, after all. Sadly, Sonia had only just gained popularity recently, so it would be an uphill task for her to 1/3 +15 BONUS That was why she had come to see Caroline today. She had wanted to request Caroline’s help. Upon reaching home, Caroline headed straight for the kitchen to prepare dinner. Only after she had finished preparing and packing all the dishes did she allow herself to take a breather. She scrolled through her phone as she took a sip of water from her glass. Just then, a notification popped up. Marina had sent her a message. Caroline’s heart skipped a beat when she saw it. It had been a long time since Marina had contacted her. An ominous feeling loomed over her heart for no apparent reason. Marina hadn’t contacted her for the past few days, so Caroline had refrained from thinking about the matter regarding Kirk’s other wife. Now, though… Inhaling deeply, Caroline summoned the courage to open her chat with Marina. She swayed when she read the message and had to hold on to one of the chairs beside the dining table for support. The letters on the screen seemed to hover as her eyes swept across them. It read, “Caroline, I got the information about the man’s wife from my friend. I’ll send it to you right away. Marina” Below the message was information regarding Kirk’s wife. Caroline clicked open the file, her hands trembling as she did so. Her eyes turned as wide as saucers when she saw the image. It took every ounce of her strength to stare at the picture on the screen. She then collapsed on the chair with a loud thump. The person in the picture was none other than Daphne! Meanwhile, in the hospital, Sonia noticed that Kirk had started becoming restless. She had been busy with the script, yet she couldn’t help but raise her head to look at what he was trying to do. Kirk had his phone in his hand. He raised it to look at the screen and put it down the next instant. He repeated this movement several times. Finally, Sonia couldn’t stand it anymore. “What are you looking at?” she asked. Kirk raised his eyes to look at her briefly with an almost unnoticeable smile. He then looked back 

Chapter 486  Kirk pressed a hand against his heart. “You frown all day and every day, and you never smile at  “I’m sure it’s the reason why my wound hasn’t healed completely. Why don’t you smile at me for  once?”  Caroline had the urge to give him a good kick in the ass, but she discarded the thought when she  recalled what the doctor had just said. She had to bear with it. Eventually, she forced a smile.  “Darling, your smile looks so forced that I feel worse now,” Kirk said.  Caroline was about to talk back when Kirk furrowed his brows and hissed in pain. Seeing this, her  expression immediately changed. “I–I’ll smile for you. Just give me some time.”  The frown on Kirk’s face disappeared almost instantly. His trick had worked, and he stared  contently at Caroline, who stared back at him.  She found it extremely hard to smile now, so she forced herself to think of happy things.  After some time, she still couldn’t recall anything that made her happy, so she gave up. “Let me  watch a funny video.” Perhaps she could smile after watching something funny.  Kirk nodded, and she unlocked her phone to scroll through tonnes of funny video clips.  Usually, she would laugh her head off watching these. But they had somehow lost their magic  today, and she couldn’t make herself laugh at them.  Seeing the scowl on her face, Kirk couldn’t help but feel his heart throb.  She couldn’t even smile with him around. It showed just how much she was disappointed in him.  He couldn’t imagine how devastated she would be if she discovered that he and Eddy were related.  His hands balled into fists, and he said, “What if …”  “I got it!”  Caroline put down her phone and looked at him. She pressed her fingers on the corners of her  mouth and pushed them upward to form a smile. “See? I’m smiling.”  Kirk laughed, amused at her comical expression. His smile lifted her mood and made her smile  1/2  +15 BONUS  Only after a moment did Caroline tear her eyes away from him and turn around so that her back faced him  She pretended to be busy looking through her documents. In truth, her heart beat like crazy, and she wondered how long it had been since they had a moment of shared laughter like that.  The wonderful memories of past times flashed through her mind as though it were just yesterday.  Caroline found herself missing the days before the wedding photoshoot. If they hadn’t gone to Macovo, perhaps things would have stayed the same as before.  Someone knocked on the door, snapping her out of her daze. “Come in,” she said.  Sonia stood in the doorway with a bouquet of lilies in one hand.  “I heard that your husband is still hospitalized, so I came to pay you two a visit,” said Sonia. She was worried that Kirk’s condition had worsened, so she had come over to visit them.  Seeing how he seemed alive and kicking, she instantly figured out what was going on.  “Thank you,” said Caroline as she placed the lilies into the vase.  “You came just in time. I’m heading back to make dinner. Can I ask you to look after him for a bit?”  Sonia panicked when she heard that.  “Let me leave with you then,” Sonia said. She hadn’t taken off her mask, so Caroline couldn’t see the blush creeping up her cheeks.  Caroline assumed that Sonia thought Kirk would be difficult to get along with. So she dragged Sonia out of the room and whispered to her, “Don’t worry. He’s easy to get along with.” 

Chapter 485 Caroline wasn’t the kind of person who would easily bend to another’s will. Kirk might have an idea on how to stackle this, but she could come up with her very own idea too. She sat on the chair beside the bed and continued going through the documents. A ghost of a smile
