Chapter 6 Let’s Have a Head–on Fight  “Rose, don’t believe in those rumors.” On the phone, Tameka’s voice was filled with fury. “They’re all fake! They could say anything just to  attract attention!  “You’re my daughter–in–law, and I’ll never recognize any other woman for that!  “I’ve called to lecture Judson…” However, the call wasn’t connected, and Isidro took all the insults.  “Thank you, Mrs. Roach. I’m fine,” Rose calmly responded.  Tameka heaved a sigh of relief. “Rose, you’re just too gentle. Judson has feelings for you. He just doesn’t know how to talk well. Don’t worry, I’ll teach him a lesson, and he will care for you after your marriage.”  He had feelings for her…  Everyone in the Roach family said this.  Rose deceived herself like this in the past, but the truth was, Judson was unlikely to like her since he never expressed it. Otherwise, he couldn’t hide his feelings, just like when she was in deep love with Judson.  How could a woman expect a man to change after their marriage on the condition that he ignored her before it?  The chance was too slim.  And in the end, she failed to break up with him.  This relationship ended up as a failure, and Rose felt that she let Tameka down.  But Tameka would find out soon.  Butlers and servants in the Imperial Garden would talk.  ***  “Rose, the Grand Movie Ceremony will be held tonight, so I need you to go to Rayvale with Eloy for a business trip,” Lakisha instructed in a low voice.  “Lillian will go as well. Try getting some information from her if you have a chance. If she admits this relationship, Judson wouldn’t have the face to sue you.”  This ceremony was more like a nominal one in the entertainment industry. Senior reporters in the company didn’t bother to go.  Lakisha wanted to send someone else to the ceremony but now, Rose would go on their behalf as a freshman. No one had any objections and instead, they had been cheering her up.  “Rose, you can do it. Obtain first–hand information to embarrass Judson!”  “Rose, we’ll be supporting you all the time!”  “Rose, stay under the bed if Lillian is on it. As long as you have the photo of their sex, you’ll win the lawsuit!”  What the hell was this….  Lakisha nodded. “This may not sound good, but it’s a way to win. Rose, you have to try.”  —  Though Darrin said that he would protect Rose, everyone knew that the best outcome of this fight against the Roawards Group would be mutual damage.  If Judson insisted on suing Rose, would Flourish Media go against the Roawards Group because of a new reporter like her?  They would probably make her the scapegoat as soon as possible.  Lakisha sighed when she saw Rose’s charming face.  Rose was beautiful and talented, but she had a hard life.  She reached the peak of her career with her first article, but what followed was her damnation.  She would be seriously injured if she was still alive when she offended Judson.  ***  Eloy had put the camera in place.  Tonight was the time when the Grand Movie Ceremony was held. Lillian shut her mouth tight as expected.  The reporters swarmed to interview her but were separated by her bodyguards.  “Miss Lillian, is your relationship with Judson real?”  “Lillian, look this way! Is the ring on your finger sent by Judson as an engagement gift?”  “Ms. Stewart, photos and videos have been made public, and you’ve admitted it. When is Judson going to recognize your relationship?”  “Ms. Stewart, I heard that Judson was going to sue the media for rumoring about your affair. What’s your opinion on this matter?”  Lillian turned a deaf ear to those questions and left under the protection of the bodyguards with a smile.  Rose didn’t join those journalists.  She went to the outside of the hotel where Lillian was going to stay with Eloy.  Lakisha gave her this chance to change her fate. After all, Judson’s lawyers were not to be trifled with.  It was just that…  Rose looked at her peers in the surroundings.  Many people thought the same as her.  “We may not catch anything even if we stay here for a night,” said Rose in a low voice.  So many reporters were here because they wanted to get the photo of Judson being with Lillian.  Cameras were all aimed at the windows of the hotel.  It would be enough for the reporters even if they just shot a photo of their silhouettes.  […]

Chapter 5 Rose Disappeared  ***  A drop of tear flowed out of the corner of Rose’s eye and fell onto the pillow  Judson forgot it.  He forgot how she got the butterfly brooch, or, put it another way, he never took it seriously.  ***  At the age of thirteen, Rose went to an auction alone with the pocket money she had saved over the years and wanted to purchase the diamond butterfly brooch.  But in the end, she couldn’t even raise the paddle due to insufficient funds.  After returning home, she cried for a week, and she would put ice on her eyes when they swelled. She lied to Tameka that she didn’t have a good sleep.  One night a week later, Judson came to her room and threw the brooch in front of her.  “Take it.”  Seeing her stunned, Judson became impatient as usual. “As a member of my family, you should fight for what you want. Why didn’t you tell us about your failure? Do we mean nothing to you?”  Rose held the brooch with ecstasy in her eyes.  “Thank you, Judson…”  Judson looked at her for a few seconds, extended his finger, and flicked her smooth forehead. “Do not cry again.”  When Rose’s parents passed away, she was young and didn’t know much about the world.  After she became a member of the Roach family, the elderly doted on her very much.  However, it was Judson who taught her how to behave.  He used to tell her to fight for what she wanted and if she failed, he would get it for her.  Now, she did what he said, but he thought that she was willful and wanted to cancel the engagement.  How ridiculous.  ***  Rose was woken up by the ringtone.  It was a call from Lakisha.  “Come over now! Judson issued a lawyer’s letter!”  Rose hurried to check out. The receptionist smiled sweetly, “Young lady, you can stay in your room at any time for a month. Someone has paid for you.”  Rose refused it and checked out. She transferred the refund to Darrin.  “Darrin, I owe you the room rate, and I’ll give it to you when I receive my salary.”  She rushed to Flourish Media, and Lakisha’s swearing could be heard on the floor.  “He was the one choosing the diamond and putting on clothes for her in the evening. This is conclusive evidence of their hidden relationship for seven years yet they sued us for defaming them. Damn it!”  Seeing Rose running in, Lakisha stuffed the lawyer’s letter into her arms. “Here, this one is yours!”  Rose looked down to read it.  And she almost swore. “Why am I the main defendant?”  “Because they thought you were a pushover!” Lakisha shrugged. “Our department and even our company have become the defendants, but you were paid special attention to.”  “It must be because of Rose’s article. It went viral online. Rose, you’ll surely receive a bonus this month.” Tommie even had the mood to tease Rose.  But the others nodded to echo him. “I think Rose has exposed Judson’s weakness, so he went mad.”  “That’s right. He must have gone crazy because what Rose wrote was the truth.”  Rose raised her head and looked at Lakisha. “Lakisha, you said that this matter wasn’t likely to be turned around.”  Lakisha spat out the lollipop in her mouth out of anger.  “Screw the Roach family!”  Just as she was swearing, someone from the Law Department came  over.  He asked for Rose’s ID.  Judson sued Flourish Media for an article and its writer.  In the article, there was detailed information about his relationship with Lillian.  It was the article Rose spent a whole night writing.  But he claimed it to be a rumor.  Rose used her penname, so the Law Department had to confirm her real identity to cope with the lawsuit.  Judson was determined, so a lawsuit would be inevitable.  Rose just took out her ID when someone reached out to push her hand back into her pocket and took the lawyer’s letter. 

Chapter 4 The Spoiled Her and the Heartless Him  True Love was an old jewelry store.  Rose remembered a visit downtown soon after she lived with the Roach family as a child, where she leaned over the window of True Love’s flagship store to look at a set of diamond wedding accessories.  Judson, who was a few years older than her, came and took her by the hand and dragged her away.  “What’s so attractive?” He was impatient.  “Judson, buy them for someday!” At that time, she was naïve and bold,  “OK.” He didn’t look back, but she could see the tips of his slightly red  ears.  Later, every time Rose passed True Love’s flagship store, she would involuntarily smile with happiness.  Even as he grew colder and more disgusted with her, she would always remember the “OK” he had said that day and the tips of his reddish ears.  It never occurred to her that the woman who walked into the store with him one day wouldn’t be her.  The phone’s ringtone sounded suddenly.  Rose said sorry at once and took away the phone.  “It’s been half an hour already.” There was a chilling coldness in his  voice.  Rose said, “I seè.”  “What are you doing?” Judson almost gritted his teeth.  She went to a quiet place to make sure no one else could hear her on the phone.  “I’m reliving your touching romance.  He was silent for a second. “Do you know what you’re talking about,  Rose?”  Rose was certain that she provoked Judson.  A day earlier, she might have been afraid and frightened, but now, her heart was deserted.  Her heart was like a wasteland after a fall of snow, where the cold stirred. Yet the sun never failed to shine.  “If there’s nothing else. I’m hanging up. By the way, congratulations, Mr. Roger, on no longer having to suffer and finding your true love today.”  She hung up and blocked Judson’s number directly.  She pondered for a while and figured that it was not enough. She turned off her phone.  ***  By the time she walked out of Flourish Media’s building, the sky was faintly bright.  “Have a good rest after you go back, but don’t turn off your phone. I want to reach you at any time.”  After a night of hard work together, everyone more or less recognized Rose’s competency.  Lakisha was serious about training rookies and reminded Rose especially, “I don’t think Lillian’s relationship will have a big twist. these upcoming days, yet you still have to be cautious of accidents…”  There wouldn’t be any accident.  Rose thought, “With the Roach family’s approval, Judson and Lillian can get married at once.  “I have to be grateful for everything I learned last night.  “It completely cuts off the remaining unwillingness and concern deep down inside me.”  A silver–gray Maserati parked on the side of the road drove silently toward her.  “Where are you staying now?” The window was lowered, and Darrin’s handsome face was revealed.  “The hotel … for now.” Rose replied.  “Get in, and I’ll give you a lift.” Darrin’s voice was gentle, but there was a touch of firmness.  Rose hesitated for a moment, and at the same time, crowds of people who had been working late came out of the building.  She was worried about being seen by others, so she got in hastily.  “Being in this line of work is hard. We often have to work day and night.” He handed a can of drink to Rose.  She took it and was surprised to find it was warm milk.  “It’s nothing. I’ve experienced it before,” Rose smiled.  “You’re right. You are the most gifted journalist I have ever met,” Darrin smiled. “In Aurrerland seven years ago, we…”  “Darrin!” Rose interrupted him suddenly. 

Chapter 3 Letting Go Isn’t Hard at All  “It’s been a while, Rose,” Darrin Carroll smiled.  Rose was slightly stunned. “It has indeed, Darrin.”  She figured that he was abroad.  After all, Darrin had said that he would not let Judson get their relationship wrong and would not see her again.  She didn’t expect him to return home and show up here at Flourish Media.  He may have had something to do with her getting an interview so quickly and getting hired so smoothly.  “Will he approve of you coming out to work?” Taking over Rose from his HR colleague, Darrin asked as he walked.  She squirmed for a second and then was relieved. She replied calmly, “We broke up.”  Darrin stopped in his tracks and was stunned. “The Roach family agreed to this?”  She shook her head. “They haven’t known it yet. He broke up with me, and of course, I won’t go beg his family.”  Why put everyone on the spot again?  She knew that Tameka would force Judson by threatening him with her life. Yet what was the point of keeping him around this way?  Darrin paused for a second and then changed the subject, saying, “It’s a  TO..  Waste for you  “It’s fine. Being an entertainment reporter is great,” Rose smiled.  Darrin had helped her so much that she didn’t want to owe him  anymore.  The Entertainment Department was divided into several groups.  The chief editor of Rose’s group was a middle–aged woman named Lakisha Whitney, lean and capable, wearing glasses, having a lollipop in her mouth, and complaining.  “Why does Lillian announce her relationship now? Does she want us to be stuck in the office forever?”  Rose’s heart skipped a beat.  She thought, “Already?  “I left Imperial Garden in the morning, and in the afternoon, they announced their relationship.  “Are they that eager?”  “Damn! Her boyfriend might be Judson Roach, the one in charge of the Roawards Group. The financial guys are snatching headlines from us? Hey, you! The newcomer! I need you to write this one!”  The news was all about speed. Lillian was a popular female star, so the second she officially announced her relationship, all the entertainment media needed to keep up.  “Girl, we got the photos firsthand. Please write something good.” One of Rose’s colleagues was a young man named Tommie Montoya. He smiled at her politely, “Within two minutes.”  Darrin brought Rose here.  Darrin returned to the country before the New Year and directly became the editor–in–chief of Flourish Media. Countless people were unconvinced.  Yet after some investigation, they not only knew his brilliant  achievements while abroad but also found out that he was the future heir of Flourish Media.  None of the employees of Flourish Media were a fool. Those he brought would be treated with respect.  What was more, Rose was stunningly pretty.  Even those in the Entertainment Department, who were used to the glamour of countless female stars, were amazed by her.  Rose flipped through the photos and spent a minute before sending back the things she wrote.  “Good,” she said to herself.  She was not rusty. Instead, she was still a professional. Even when faced with the photos of Judson and Lillian, she could still remain calm.  In the old days, she would have suffocated at the news that they were together.  In the past, the thought of leaving him would have made her feel that she could not live at all.  To her surprise, it was fine after breaking up with him.  It turned out that time and indifference could really exhaust a woman’s deepest obsession and love. She thought that her feelings were like the  sea and would never dry up, but only after thirteen years, her love for him had slowly vanished.  Letting go wasn’t hard at all. It was just that she had never given it a  ***  The photos were taken early this morning.  Judson and Lillian stood side by side in front of the clubhouse. Under the street lamp and the night wind, he tenderly put his coat on her.  It was right after Rose went to the clubhouse, crying to see him.  Judson refused to see Rose, so she had to go to the airport to stop the surgeon herself.  She didn’t expect that the second she left, he left together with Lillian.  One more second of his time on her would be a waste, but he offered his unlimited time to the woman he loved. 

Chapter 2 No One Gets to Belittle Her  Rose graduated from the Journalism Department of Rayvale Communication University, and she had been admitted to graduate school.  When she shared the joyful news with Judson, he responded with a cold look. “You got admitted just like that? Well, I guess that makes it easier for you to seduce men.”  “Tell me.” All of a sudden, he moved closer to her, his eyes brimming with sarcasm. “What did you offer Darrin this time to secure yourself a spot? After all, the two things you excel at are charming men and acquiring favors.”  Upon hearing this, she relinquished her hard–earned spot and even her job, being willing to remain in the Imperial Garden, awaiting his return every day.  Her greatest fear was being labeled as someone who received special  treatment.  As it was precisely the reason why she was adopted by the Roach family.  Her parents died because of the Roach family.  Guilty, the Roach family remembered the kindness and not only adopted her but also made her Judson’s fiancée.  When she was young, she was naïve and fantasized.  However, as she matured, she was compelled to confront reality due to its harsh nature.  Judson never wanted to marry her.  Lillian was correct. She expressed, “Ms. Edwards, you compel the Roach family to regard you as their daughter due to your parents‘ benevolence. You even manipulate them into proposing their son to you. You believe you love Judson, but the only person you genuinely love is yourself. Are you aware of how much you have cornered Judson?”  Did Rose love no one but herself?  She had no idea. She only knew that she lost herself and became utterly humble because of that man.  If this kind of love caused pain for both her and him, it would be better for the sake of both of them to let go of it as soon as possible.  ***  By the time Rose came back to her senses, she had sent out several application letters already  Breaking up with Judson meant she had to live on her own from now on. Tameka Roach, Judson’s mother, gave her pocket money regularly every month, and Judson’s grandparents would also give her allowances every now and then.  Yet considering the current situation she was in, she couldn’t accept any money from them anymore.  She wouldn’t touch the money on the card unless she had to. Even if she did, she’d pay back as soon as she could.  She would never let anyone use money as an excuse to belittle her.  Judson would say that she tried to seduce men when she was out working, and he would mock her for living off his family if she stayed  home.  She sneered.  From now on, she would rely on herself. She would be responsible for feeding herself, buying herself clothes, saving her sister, and having relationships.  No one got to tell her what to do.  Collecting herself, she went to the hospital.  Jenifer was in critical condition last night. She was still weak after being rescued, but she smiled brightly when she saw Rose.  “Rose.”  Jenifer was Rose’s aunt’s daughter. I  Rose’s aunt died of an illness, and Rose’s uncle quickly remarried and had a son, making Jenifer redundant.  Rose went to the Roach’s place for a party last year. When she returned, Jenifer was squatting in front of Imperial Garden’s gate with a dirty bag, and her face was red with cold.  Jenifer held a crumpled piece of paper with Imperial Garden’s address. in her hand and didn’t dare to look at Rose. “Are you my sister? Mom told me to come find my sister if I needed anything…”  The paper was left to Jenifer by Rose’s aunt. It was her last hope.  Rose soon knew why Jenifer was abandoned.  Jenifer suffered from congenital liver failure and leukemia. She tried her best to come to Imperial Garden alone and was sent to the emergency room that night.  Since then, her complications continued, and she barely came out of the hospital.  Her medical expenses were shockingly high.  As always, Judson sneered coldly, “The Edwards family has always known how to maximize profits.”  ***  Rose took a deep breath and sat next to Jenifer.  “Rose!” Jenifer was dumbfounded. “Are you ill? What’s wrong with you?”  Rose was stunned.  She tried to intercept the surgeon at the airport last night. Because there was some traffic near the airport, and she couldn’t wait, she got out of the taxi in advance and ran to the terminal on foot.  She wasn’t paying attention enough and was accidentally hit by a private car.  Fortunately, the driver threw the steering wheel in time, so the car only slightly grazed her body.  Yet she still fell out and suffered multiple bruising and soft tissue damage. 

Chapter 1 Break up with Him or Get Lost  Rose’s hands and feet were cold when she stepped into Imperial Garden in Elland City for the last time.  She heard several servants whisper to each other.  “I heard Mr. Roach was already with Ms. Stewart last night. How come she still comes back?”  “She must be thinking that she hasn’t suffered enough humiliation. Mr. Roach intended to grant her a dignified exit, but she refused it.”  “She’s so shameless.”  “Let’s see how long she can hold on to…”  After seven years of treading the stairs leading to the second–floor master bedroom, today was the first time she felt they were so long and steep.  The housekeeper, Aileen Snow, had been following her. When Aileen saw her open the door of the master bedroom, Aileen immediately stopped her and said, “Ms. Edwards, Mr. Roach is not here right now, and I’m afraid it won’t be proper for you to enter. If something is missing, we won’t be able to take the huge responsibility.”  If Rose hadn’t broken up with Judson yesterday, she might never have seen Aileen’s true color.  Aileen, who had always greeted her with smiles and cared for her, actually despised her this much deep down.  Rose glanced at Aileen calmly. “Don’t worry. I’ll only take my things.”  Aileen smiled and remarked, “I must admit, Ms. Edwards, I didn’t anticipate finding things here that you personally purchased.”  Aileen pondered, “The Roach family has nurtured Rose for over a decade. If she possesses any sense, she ought to depart empty–handed and allow Ms. Stewart to assume the role of Mr. Roach’s fiancée.”  Rose’s eyes turned cold. “Aileen, the Roach family has many dogs, too. They all know that barking doesn’t always guarantee getting meat in  return.”  She believed that the housekeeper didn’t have a say in matters concerning her and Judson.  Aileen’s face turned pale. As soon as there was a hint of resentment in her eyes, she was suddenly taken aback. She bowed her head and spoke respectfully, “Mr. Roach…”  Rose turned around at once.  Judson was standing right behind her  The morning sun shone through the large floor-to–ceiling windows of the bedroom and made his tall and handsome figure glow.  In a trance, she felt that his straight nose and beautiful eyes were not as cold as the usual days.  “Get out,” he said to Aileen and walked over indifferently. His reprimand carried a chilling demeanor.  “Aileen has worked here for seven years. You shouldn’t talk to her like that.”  Rose was amused.  She thought, “So what?  “Should I remind him that I have been living with the Roach family for thirteen years, and I was once his rightful fiancée?  “In the end, I’m not as important as a housekeeper in his eyes.  “Forget it. I’ve made my peace.  “At this point, what do I expect?  “If he cared about me even just a little bit, he would not have kicked me out yesterday for that woman, Lillian Stewart. All my years of efforts and affection were shattered.”  Perhaps the sneering look on her face was too obvious. Anyway, his face darkened. He grabbed her by the arm.  “The Roach family spoils you indeed!”  www  Great pain came from the place where he pinched her, making her bite her lip at once.  She couldn’t help but let out a soft moan.  Tears welled up in her eyes, and her complexion paled with the evident pain she was experiencing.  Judson frowned, and his eyes darkened, filled with the disgust and disdain that Rose  was familiar with, and some other emotions…  Without waiting for her to interpret what else emotions were hidden under his eyes, she had been dragged into his arms.  “No…” Rose tried to break away.  “Aren’t you short of money?” Judson spoke coldly, his usual contempt mixed with perfunctory impatience. “I have some business to attend to later. Don’t waste my time.”  She felt humiliated, yet she didn’t stand a chance to resist.  Following passionless and joyless sex, Judson rose from the bed, apathetically dressed, and then casually tossed her a card.  Rose only felt more pain from the bruises and abrasions on her body. She was in a car accident last night and almost died.  She didn’t want him to catch sight of her wounds, fearing he might misconstrue her as feigning misery to persuade him to remain once  more.  The black card before her emitted a golden glow, revealing its substantial value.
