Chapter 68  “Jack” Serenity called out to him. She was louder this time and pressed her hands firmly to his face.  A trace of clarity gradually came to his eyes, and his dark pupils regained focus, reflecting her face. However, the look in his eyes seemed inexplicably complicated.  “What’s wrong?” Serenity asked.  “It’s nothing.” Jackson let out a long breath.  “I’m glad you’re fine.” Serenity sighed in relief. “That look you just gave was like…” She thought about it and came up with at description. “You were like fragile glass, and it scared me.”  “Fragile glass?‘ Jackson chuckled softly. A deep coldness and hostility flashed in his eyes and disappeared instantly. Then, he was back to normal. “Sis, no one in this world can break me.”  At that instance, Serenity felt like Jackson was a different person, and she thought she must have seen it wrongly.  “Sis, you’re never going to leave me behind, are you?” he asked, staring at her.  Serenity smiled. “Didn’t we talk about this before? I won’t leave you as long as you stay.”  “Yeah, we did. I forgot,” Jackson murmured.  Jackson opened his arms and grabbed her, embracing her and feeling her presence in his arms.  Serenity had promised not to leave him behind, yet why did he feel so uneasy? Was he scared? Would she leave him after knowing his true identity? Jack could stay by her side, but what about Jackson Valor? Could he?  David Shaw was questioning his son, Zeke, in the living room of the Shaw Residence. “Zeke, Jenny said Jackson sent his secretary to pick you up. Why did he suddenly ask for a private meeting with you?”  David was a little fearful of Jackson. After all, the Shaw family was unlike the Valor family. The Shaw family’s business was now declining. In David’s view, Zeke’s marriage with Jenny was the only way to turn their family business around.  David was afraid of Jackson’s prejudice against them as it might hinder the Shaw family’s marriage with the Hall family.  “It’s nothing,” Zeke said  “You didn’t tell Jenny anything either. Are you going to say nothing to us as well? If there was nothing, why would Jackson send his secretary to pick you up?” David said with displeasure.  Zeke’s mother, Marcia, urged, “Yeah, Zeke. It’s better to be honest with us if there’s something wrong”  Zeke took a deep breath. “It’s really nothing.”  Zeke could not tell them anything. If he did, Jackson would be furious! Zeke still had chills when he thought of his previous meeting with Jackson!  “Does Jackson still have an issue with us? Is he going to act against us?” David simply guessed on his own.  Zeke had to make up an excuse. “It has nothing to do with us. Jackson met me that day and talked about the engagement party.  Hearing that, David and Marcia breathed a sigh of relief and looked better.  Meanwhile, Zele’s younger sister, Joy, was indignant at the conversation. She complained, “Isn’t it all because of Serenity? If it weren’t for her, why would we have so many worries?” 

Chapter 67  Serenity let out a sigh of relief. “Great, you’re finally awake.”  Jackson sat up. Earlier, he had dreamed of his childhood, kneeling in front of that woman and begging. Why had he had such a dream? Was it because they had talked about that woman earlier?  “I just had a bad dream…” Jackson exhaled a long breath. When he looked down, he found that his pajamas had been unbuttoned, revealing his bare chest. “Why are my clothes…”  Seeing that, Serenity pursed her lips in embarrassment and explained, “Well… You were screaming about the pain, and I was afraid that something was wrong… Uhh… So, I unbuttoned your pajamas and wanted to have a look”  Jackson stared at Serenity in silence, and her face slowly grew hot.  “I swear I didn’t… You woke up before I saw anything. I didn’t see anything.” Serenity was busy explaining, but the more she spoke, the weirder it sounded.  “Even if you did see anything, it’s okay,” Jackson reassured her.  Serenity’s face flushed red. His response made her almost choke on her own saliva. ‘My goodness! Doesn’t he know how someone else can easily misunderstand his words?!”  After a short silence, she stammered, “Does it… Does it still hurt?”  “I’m fine.” Jackson looked down and buttoned up his pajamas.  Serenity struggled to keep her gaze above his neck. However, she suddenly yanked his pajamas open after an accidental glimpse of his chest.  “How did you get this…” Serenity stared at his chest at a loss. There was a scar on his chest near his heart. Although the scar had faded, it looked terrible. She was sure it was definitely not a minor injury.  “It’s just an old small injury,” he said indifferently.  Serenity bit her lower lip slightly. She raised her hand and gently touched his scar. In his sleep earlier, he had kept crying out in pain while scratching at this spot. Was it because of this injury?  After so many years, he still felt the pain in his dream. How could it be just a minor injury?  Was he in great pain when he had gotten this injury? Serenity felt a terrible heartache for the pain he had gone through.  She murmured, “How did you get hurt like that? When did you get hurt?”  Jackson stiffened slightly. How many years had it been? No one had ever touched his scar except the doctor. She was the only one… The only one who had ever touched his scar.  Jackson seemed to feel a rush of blood to his heart, and his heart felt as if it was beating faster than usual.  “A long time ago. It doesn’t hurt anymore,” he said.  Serenity felt slightly relaxed. Only then did she realize that it looked like she was going to do something indecent to him  “G–great! Quickly button up. You’ll catch a cold.” She blushed and moved her hand away quickly.  The warmth of her fingertips suddenly disappeared, making him feel empty.  Jackson buttoned up his pajamas slowly. “By the way, while I was sleeping, did I say anything other than crying out in pain?”  After a short hesitation, she answered frankly, “You just… You loept yelling ‘Mom, don’t po“…”  Jackson froze. He unconsciously clenched his hands into fists and dug his nails into his palmus until it hurt.  Seeing his reaction, Serenity could not help but reach out and touch his cheek. She could feel a slightly cold feeling on her fingertips.  Chapter 67  2/2  “Jack,” she whispered his name.  Jackson slowly looked up and fluttered his eyelashes slightly. He lifted up his eyes and stared fixedly at her through his bangs.  He had the same look in his eyes as before when he talked about his parents. It seemed empty. For some reason, this made her heart hurt a little. 

Chapter 66  Serenity was startled. She did not expect the place where she had met him to be the place where his father had died.  “I’m sorry,” she said.  “My father’s death was his own doing.” Jackson said in a low voice. “No need to apologize, Sis.”  “His own doing?” Serenity was surprised. She never thought he would describe his father’s death in this way.  “Isn’t it? He fell in love with someone he shouldn’t have. Soon, the person he loved found out he had no more value. He knelt on his knees and desperately begged for her to stay. Even so, it was useless, Finally, he froze to death in the snow.”  The expression he had seemed indifferent. It was as if he was just talking about a perfectly ordinary thing, and even his voice remained calm.  However, there seemed to be a feeling of loneliness around him.  Serenity felt like Jackson was back to how he had been when she had first met him.  “Jack” Serenity called out to him.  When Jackson looked up, her face was reflected in his dark eyes. “Hey, do you think he had his death coming?”  Serenity felt a dryness in her throat. After a moment of hesitation, she stuttered out a question. “Was she… Is that woman your mother?–  Although he was silent with no expression, a touch of pain flashed through his eyes.  Serenity knew the answer in that instant, and she did not know how to comfort him. Any words she said would be meaningless at this moment. Only those who had experienced the past understood this pain.  She stood up and hugged him as he sat in the chair.  As he rested his head against her body, he inhaled her scent in his nose and felt her warmth on his cheeks. Through her clothes, her steady heartbeat resonated in his ears.  It made him want to keep listening to her heartbeat like this…  “Mom… Don’t go…”  The tiny figure knelt right on his knees. The woman had already packed her bag and was leaving. However, he wanted to beg  the woman to stay.  Even so, it was useless. The woman was determined and left without looking at him.  When he saw she was about to leave, the boy panicked. He grew desperate and tried to reach out and grab his mother.  The next moment, the young boy was swung away. Then, a piercing pain exploded in his chest.  ‘It hurts! It hurts!!  It was so painful. Could anyone save him from his pain? Could someone stop his pain? He felt like he was dying from the suffocating pain…  “Jack! Jack!”  ‘Someone is calling! Who is it? Who is calling?  “Jack, it’s fine now. There’s no more pain. I’m here. I’m right here, Jack. It’s fine now…” A gentle voice called out to him anxiously, worried  As her voice reached him, his suffocation and pain faded like a tidal wave. He struggled to open his eyes, and a beautiful and quiet woman soon came into his sight.  Chapter 66  Jackson muttered with difficulty, “Sis…” 

Chapter 65  The cold glint in Jackson’s beautiful eyes made Zele shudder.  Connor, who stood beside them, spoke up. “Don’t ask what you’re not supposed to ask. Mr. Shaw, how do you not understand this?  Zeke paled and left in embarrassment.  Meanwhile, Jackson leaned back on the couch. He then took out a cheap cell phone with only one number stored in it and dialed it. A few moments later, a gentle female voice answered the call.  “Sis, what do you want to eat tonight? I’ll pack it and bring it home,” Jackson said softly, and his cold eyes became gentle.  That night, Serenity took a tissue and wiped the picture frame with her mother’s photo.  She had specially bought a small desk for her rented place. She usually put her mother’s photo on the desk and would wipe the accumulated dust every few days.  All of her mother’s belongings had been left at the Lewis Residence. For her, this photo was the only thing she had of her mother.  Jackson sat aside and quietly watched her as she wiped the photo.  “By the way, Jack, it’s almost New Year. Have you bought… Uh… Tickets home or anything?” Serenity asked.  Over the past two days, many of her colleagues in the Sanitation Office had been scrambling to grab train tickets for the New  Year.  Jackson instantly understood what she wanted to ask. “I don’t need to buy any tickets.”  “You don’t have to go home?” Serenity was surprised.  “I don’t have a home except here.” Even though he had stayed in the Valor Residence for many years, he never felt at home.  Serenity remembered that Jackson had said previously that he had no family, but Most people had relatives and extended family, and they would usually visit them during New Year’s.  Serenity then voiced her doubts. Nevertheless, Jackson smiled and explained indifferently, “I do have some relatives, but 1 don’t really go out of my way to visit them.”  Although he still had his grandfather, they did not share an affectionate relationship. After all, Master Zack needed nothing more than an heir to the Valor family.  What Master Zack wanted was merely a capable heir. As long as Jackson was good and strong enough, he was what Master Zack wanted. If he was a weakling, Master Zack would ruthlessly expel him regardless of their relationship.  Besides, Jackson had half of that woman’s blood in his body. Master Zack hated this the most and was disgusted with it.  Jackson remembered when he was a child, many times, Master Zack would grimace with hatred in his eyes. “Why do you have that woman’s blood flowing in you?! You shouldn’t even exist!”  At that time, Master Zack had hit him with his cane countless times and continued for a long time. When he grew up and began to show his abilities, Master Zack’s attitude toward him slowly changed.  However, he still had that woman’s blood flowing in him, and this was a fact that could not be changed.  Serenity hesitated for a moment before asking, “How about your parents? A–are they ”  The look on Jackson’s face changed slightly. Those beautiful eyes looked at her, but the emotions in his eyes seemed to be masked with a thin veil. She could not tell what he was thinking at the moment.  Serenity bit her lips. “If you don’t want to talk about it, just pretend I didn’t ask.“”  “Do you really want to know?” Jackson spoke with a hint of inadvertent coldness in his tone.  “I just want to understand you better, but if it’s something you don’t want to say, don’t say it. Anyway, the past doesn’t matter anymore. What’s more important is the future, isn’t it? Serenity said.  Jackson’s long eyelashes fluttered softly and then stopped. “My dad died. I met you on the anniversary of his death. Many years ago, he died where I sat that day.”

Chapter 60  “Quinn Fender, I don’t want anyone in this workplace to be hostile to each other. Serenity Lewis certainly has been in prison before, but that is no reason for us to discriminate against her, making it difficult for her to survive. Since you don’t feel comfortable working with her, I think it’s best that you leave this job.”  But… But she was a full–time employee! How could she be fired just like that?! Quinn could hardly believe that it was real, yet she could not deny that it had just happened!  She heard someone urging her, “Say something, Quinn.”  She looked around her, then when her gaze fell on Serenity, she rushed toward her in a burst of outrage. She reached her in one huge stride and yelled, “You! It’s all your fault! If it hadn’t been for you, the director would never have fired me! You’re the one he’s supposed to fine!”  Everyone there was astounded. So the one getting fired had ended up being… Quinn Fender?!  “You’re not joking, are you, Quinn?”  “But how could it be?!  Quinn glared at Serenity with fierce contempt, and she started to raise her hand to hit her. Serenity managed to dodge her, but Quinn seemed to have gone rabid, and she was hell–bent on attacking Serenity.  Just then, sucneune stepped forward and held Quinn back from reaching Serenity.  “Haven’t you had enough? What does Serenity have to do with the director’s decision to fire you, anyway? How can someone in her position ever influence him?”  Quinn turned around and noticed that it was Peter.  Seeing this, the other drivers rushed forward to hold Quinn back too. And just like that, the whole farce ended.  “Thank you,” Serenity said to Peter.  “Don’t mention it,” Peter replied in a voice laced with guilt. “If it hadn’t been for me, she would never target you like that.”  Serenity was about to turn and leave, but Peter suddenly asked, “That guy you called your brother… Is he really your real brother?”  Serenity stared at Peter, slightly taken aback by the question.  Peter then stammered, “I just.. I just feel like.. The two of you don’t look like siblings.”  When he first saw them together, for some reason, it seemed more to him like they were lovers, not siblings.  “We’re not related by blood,” she told him, but he is family to me,  Family, huh? Peter still could not believe it. Even if she did think of him as family, what about that guy…? Did he think of her as family and nothing else?  The way that guy looked at Serenity, Peter could clearly see signs of possessiveness in his eyes, and it was definitely not the way abrother looked at his sister!  “Are you listening to me, Zeke  Jenny had to raise her voice when she asked Zele the question. He had been acting oddly distracted that whole day, even to the point where she had to repeat what she said a few times, and even then he did not seem to be listening to her.  “Ah!” Zeke exclaimed, coming abruptly back to his senses. “What were you saying?  “What’s wrong with you today?” Jenny grumbled. “If you’re going to act this way tomorrow when try on the dress, I’m just going to find someone else to accompany me!!  2/2  “Jenny, I suddenly thought of something urgent that I need to attend to immediately!”  As he spoke, he shot up to his feet and rushed out of the private lounge in a great hurry.  Jenny did not even have the chance to ask him anything before he was gone. Now, she was left all alone in the spacious private lounge with a huge table full of food. Her expression was twisted by displeasure. What could be so urgent that it made him abandon her like that?! He seemed to be a completely different man compared to the tender way he usually treated her!  Meanwhile, Zeke made a call to his secretary while driving and instructed, “Go to the Sanitation Office and get me Serenity Lewis’s current address now!  Not long afterward, his secretary sent Serenity’s address to Zeke’s mobile phone. He then took off to her place at top speed. 

Chapter 59  Serenity furrowed her brows Was Zeke asking about… Jack?  “You should really mind your own business, Mr. Shaw. I was only with my brother yesterday. Do I need to report to you about that too?”  “Brother?” asked Zeke. “Since when did you have a brother?”  As far as he knew, the only sibling Serenity had was a younger sister.  “He’s a brother to me,” she replied, “and that’s all that matters. Do you have any problem with that?”  Zeke studied Serenity’s face, almost as if he was trying to determine the truth of her words from her expressions.  Just then, Xyla, who had been sweeping the other side of the road, noticed what was going on and hurried over, saying, “Calm down, Mr. Shaw! Don’t do anything rash! Let her go!”  Xyla recognized Zeke as the man who had accompanied Jenny Hall when she came to the Sanitation Office to apologize. According to her colleagues, this man must be Serenity’s ex–boyfriend.  “You really should let go of her, Mr. Shaw, otherwise someone might take a picture of you with her now, and then you’ll have a lot of explaining to do to your girlfnend, Miss Hall.”  Zeke’s expressions went through several changes before he finally let go of Serenity and left.  “What did that guy want from you?” Xyla asked Serenity with concer  “Who knows?” she replied. “He probably had nothing better to do!  She was perfectly certain that whatever reason he had for coming to her and asking her who she was dating, it was definitely not because he still had any feelings for her. Still, what had happened was undeniably odd. Only God knew what Zeke Shaw was trying to do!  “By the way,” Xyla said, “I think you’d better talk to the director during lunch break, Serenity. I heard that Quinn has been collecting signatures in a petition to pressure the director to fire you.”  Serenity’s eyebrows knitted. It seemed that Quinn was sparing no effort in getting rid of her. Still…  She said, “If the director decides to fire me, there’d be no point in talking to him. If it comes to that, I’ll just look for another  job.”  Even though she had said that, she still felt a little helpless since she had only managed to get this job after tirelessly applying for countless jobs everywhere. Finding another job would unquestionably be a nigh impossible task.  Xyla sighed. She knew, of course, that workers in their position did not even sign a contract before taking up the job. Compared to those in proper positions like Quinn, they were, simply put, expendable. She did not even have to guess whose side the director would take between Quinn and Serenity.  Once they had both completed their work, they returned to the Sanitation Office together, where they bumped into Quinn.  “I think you’d better get ready to leave now,” Quinn told Serenity with a smug look on her face. “No one here has any desire to work with a criminal, you know.”  Serenity kept her composure, showing no sign of fear at all, which had been what Quinn hoped to see.  This vexed Quinn.  “Let’s see how much longer you can keep up that act!” she dared Serenity. “Soon, the director is going to call you into his office, then we’ll see what happens!”  She then snorted haughtily. She had worked so hard trying to get the signatures of most people in their workplace. Judging from the director’s reaction when she handed the petition over to him, she was pretty sure that Serenity would be fired soon.  Yet moments later, an employee from the Human Resources Department came to her and told her, “The director would like to  see you in his office, quinn.”  “Me?” Quinn asked, surprised. Could it be that the director had some questions about the petition so he wanted to talk to her before firing Serenity?  And so, Quinn beaded over to the director’s office.  “Serenity,” Nyla said, her face wrought with concern, “make sure you let the director know how desperate your situation has been when you see him later, okay? Perhaps he might sympathize with your plight and change his mind about firing you.”  “We’ll see how it goes,” Serenity responded.  At that moment, her colleagues all looked at her with different looks on their faces. Some looked at her with sympathy, some with disgust, and more…  But no one could have guessed that Quinn would come out of the director’s office looking devastated. There was not a trace of smug confidence left on her face.  Some of their colleagues surrounded her and asked her, “What did the director have to say to you, Quinn?”  By that point, Quinn was on the verge of tears. She could hardly believe what was happening. How could she be the one getting fired?? It clearly should have been Serenity!  However, what the director told her in the office still rang vividly in her ears…
